I don’t believe this number.

3500 extra calories a week would lead to a pound a week weight gain. For years? We would all weigh 500 pounds.

Not a bad choice, especially if you do not have to pay for it! I’m sure you can easily run to Stanley park from there. Make sure to go for a stroll along the harbor and check out the Olympic Cauldron - it is very spectacular with all the lights and reflections in the water.

MOfWC, here you go:

[google map direction - The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver](Fairmont Hotel Vancouver - Luxury Hotel in Vancouver (Canada))

I thought it was about 2 miles from the hotel to the park entrance; the Google map says 2.6 km.

Alas, not only is it nearly impossible to accurately measure calorie intake or calorie burn, those formulas are very simplistic and not very accurate. For example, if you really ate an excess of 500 calories a day, you would get bigger, not just from added fat, but from bigger muscles needed to carry that fat around. Eventually, you would reach the point where the extra 500 calories is no longer extra, but is being burned to fuel your bigger size. So, to keep getting bigger, you’d have eat even more.

Of course, the same thing happens in reverse. A level of food intake that results in weight loss reduces lean muscle and, at some point, no longer results in weight loss – the dreaded “plateau”.

When we extrapolate beyond the data range:

[By 2606, the US Diet will be 100 Percent Sugar](Whole Health Source: By 2606, the US Diet will be 100 Percent Sugar)

;)

Thanks, BB. It’s been years since I’ve been there, but I definitely want to get to Stanley Park to run.

100% sugar! Now, you’re talking. That’s the kind of diet I could really enjoy. Red twizzlers and Pepsi, morning, noon, and night. Oh wait, I’ve already tried that!

Consumption of sugar can’t continue to rise. It’s already in everything we eat or drink. How could it increase?

The most high-visibility case of rhabdo recently was in the U. of Iowa football program a couple of years ago. First workout in Jan. after winter break. Players had to do 100 barbell back squats at 50% of their maximum weight. Thirteen players ended up hospitalized over the next few days with rhabdo from over-use.

FinalReportonRhabdoincident

What I find interesting is the fairly small range between a good workout and injurious workout. I would think that three sets of 10 squats would be a good solid workout – certainly for 20 year old athletes, but even for geezers. But, tripling the reps caused 13 players to be hospitalized.

I’m here! Signed up for Deep Water Running (the class I was in was a “trial” class) and am doing a Cross Fit class this Friday. Have the Chicago Color Run this Sunday and then South Bend next Saturday. Goal: To finish! Eating’s been pretty good, but I’m really trying to focus on building muscle at this point and not focus so much on the scale. Pleased with how I look in clothes, though. You guys are a GREAT support system!!

Anxious to hear how the deep water running class goes. I’ve done a lot of deep water running (during injuries) but not sure how it would translate into a class- unless they do intervals or something sort of like spin class.

Yeah, I was about ready to head over to the Greek thread, PG, and tell you it was time to come back to your tribe.

6.5 miles as scheduled today. Tired hip but otherwise feel pretty good.

Yesterday I had an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon (ankle specialist), who seemed really young, (googled him after I left the office–he’s 4 years older than my oldest kid). His view was that the hardware in my ankle is not causing the cellulitis. Says he wouldn’t recommend surgery to remove it. He was pretty amazed when I told him about the fitness stuff I’d been doing and also the 3-day walk. He said that given all the trauma and arthritis, which is probably due to the trauma, I should be pleased that I’m doing so much. He told me to go ahead and walk/spin/lift weights–do all the stuff that I’d been doing. He gave me a prescription for a compression stockings, which are pretty ugly, but I’m just happy to be able to do something.

Going to see another ankle specialist–hope he doesn’t have a different view. Also, friend who had cellulitis recommended a dermatologist who helped her get rid of it. Think I’ll see her as well.

This morning, I went to the gym and did an hour-long power class–it consisted of dead lifts, rows with barbells, tricepts work with hand weights, squats with and without weights, planks, push-ups, and core work. I used weights that were lighter than I normally would since I’m starting back. After class, I did 45 minutes on the step machine, followed by stretching. Going to walk 2 miles with H tonight after dinner. So far, I’m feeling good–no problem with ankle. Upper body is a bit sore, but given that I’ve been idle for a pretty long time, I’m not complaining.

Best of luck to you, Bromfield!

Bromfield- I hope you can get somewhere with this! Get some of the cute compression socks instead of the hideous medical stockings. Google Pro-Compression or CEP.

Sounds good Bromfield - hope the2nd doc confirms the first!

Good luck Bromfield. Sounds like a solid workout today!

I had a day off yesterday since it was very rainy and gray, and I had no time to drive to the gym. H and I bought a fresh turkey, and I spend the afternoon making a November kind of meal :-). Healthy, though. My favorite side was a carrot and sweet potato pur

Hmmm. Turkey sounds good.

Bromfield. Well, that sounds encouraging at least from the hardware standpoint. Actually, if you are prone to infection, you probably want to skip any surgery in that area you can. I hope you find a long-term answer.

To the basement for a full workout. Felt good, but I could only manage three sets of four chinups. Couldn’t make the five rep sets I did last time stick. Oh, well… Everything else was good after a little layoff.

Now, on to a late dinner. Whipping up a little green Thai curry with fresh cod, snow peas, and baby corns…

Bromfield, hope you will get the buggers out of your ankle soon! Maybe you can decorate your ugly prescription socks with some embroidery? Well, if they are hopeless, as MOfWC said, CEP makes very pretty ugly compression socks.

Ok, should I be scared of trying Crossfit, especially 2 days before I do a 5k?

My non-expert opinion? I wouldn’t do it. I think there are better ways to cross train.
