Awesome!! Vancouver is indeed a great city. I highly recommend Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel if you can splurge :slight_smile: Running in Stanley Park is pretty cool.

That skirt sounds like another (rare) miss for Lulu. The Runsie (ugh!) went on sale after collecting dust on the racks of my local stores all summer long.

For the hiking hippies:

We are at the Fairmont on Georgia Street- all paid for by the conference! I think I can run to Stanley Park from there, but I’m sure the hotel will have runner directions.

NMinn- glad you got to walk around!

Thumbs up for the trip to Vancouver and Stanley Park. :)

NMinn, I’m glad you were able to get around okay and hope you had fun in CA.

Sabaray, I’m content enough with 4 lately. ;)

4.5 miles today since I didn’t do anything yesterday. I’m just going to take it day by day and see what I feel like doing.

A group of women of similar vintage and speed have invited me to run a half with them. I looked at the course and it’s flat. The finishing times in my age group from last year are quite a bit slower than what I project my finish would be. I just don’t want to be last. So, I’m reluctant to abandon my little project quite yet.

Vintage - I love that. :)

3.5 mile walk with a friend. Much slower than my usual, but still plenty of footsteps. I am so sed to walking a really quick pace that I felt like we were crawling while my friend was huffing and puffing- it’s all relative I guess!

MOWC, let us know if you decide to detour south a little ways after the conference. :)

A lot of races going on in this area…

You’ve gotta get up pretty early in the morning to beat the ol’ (formerly) fat guy when it comes to being up the latest fashion trends!

Speaking of which, BB, that hiking skirt looks hideous. What brand position: fashion for women who don’t shave their legs! :)

From an ol’ (formerly) fat guy perspective, I much prefer shorts or the standard black tights on women hikers! Hiking pants for a more conservative fashion!

Oh, good lord. They made the skirt for men:

[How it Works-Men : Macabi Skirt™, Outdoor travel skirt with pockets, convertible, quick-dry for trekking, hiking, sightseeing for women and men](http://www.macabiskirt.com/how-it-works-men)

Honestly, I can’t think of anything LESS comfortable for hiking. I think I’ll stick with my REI shorts or Marmot hiking pants. Need something for a restaurant after the hike? I know, change into a clean pair of pants! Doh…

I too prefer shorts/crop pants for hiking. I once had to do a short hike in a skirt; I cleverly tied a knot in one corner to shorten it somewhat & take care of all the excess fabric. It worked, but I would have been more secure (in every sense of the word) in shorts! We were on a pretty rocky up & down trail… :eek:

Can’t recall where I first saw this article so I’ll share it here. Horrifying article about worst-case scenario in Crossfit:

Deborah- I would love to. This whole thing is very engineered and my flights are all made for me. Besides, we leave for Kona 2 days after we get back from Vancouver. Going to be TOO short a trip to the Pacific Northwest!

Thanks for the link, mommusic. Interesting read and similar to many other horror stories. Exercise is not supposed to hurt or injure you! I’m not sure where the “no pain, no gain” notion came from. Maybe too many bad football coach movies?

After some rest and recovery time, I was back in the basement. Had to pack up a new tent that I had set up down there to attach guylines. Hard to workout with a tent in the way.

Did my short little KB circuit with the 35 lb kettlebell. Back to a full workout tomorrow.

HA! No skirt for me! I just wore shorts. Thanks for the laughs! ;)

<a href=“Dietary Report Card Disappoints - The New York Times”>Dietary Report Card Disappoints - The New York Times;

Anyone read this today? Acknowledges that Americans eat too much sugar and too much in the form of grain products. We still eat more beef and pork than chicken and fish. Interesting.

In other news, Burger King is launching a new lower-calorie French fry. I’m going to have to pass. Makes me think of the potato chips you couldn’t eat too many of before suffering…undesirable effects.

Where’s PizzaGirl been?

Broomfield, I’m sending you the mojo for a good doc who will get that hardware out and be done with it!

MomWC, jealous of your trip :slight_smile: I’d tried hard to get mcson to go to UBC at one point for the visit potential (and the incredibly low tuition for expats :slight_smile: A Canadian composer he admires came from that program, and we have a playwright pal who teaches there. But I took him too early for a visit…the homeless drug addicts broke his heart, though he loved the city and campus…in all, he didn’t want to be that far away.

That skirt is a wee bit ridiculous, but I suppose it might come in handy during the zombie apocalypse or something if you needed to be able to run, wade, and carry ammo for days without feeling unfresh :slight_smile: The male version is clearly catering to the kilt clan, who apparently enjoy “the tradition” (of not wearing underwear…)

No risk of rhabdo here, I’m afraid. My body appears to have a very distinct notion of what it calls a “set.” Nonetheless, I am sneaking in the planks, side planks, bird dogs and wee kettlebell swings, squats and presses. If I do just 10-15 min. after my morning mile, I don’t seem to get too sore…but that may also mean I’m not doing much by way of building muscle either. We’ll see if after a while I can graduate to a big girl’s routine :slight_smile: First goal is to get a routine that doesn’t hurt/lock my idiot facet joints, and so far so good thanks to McGill’s book!

I “saw” Pizza Girl a page or two back…but always enjoy her honest candor and updates!!!

Seems like any kind of extreme overtraining can do that.

Re: <a href=“Dietary Report Card Disappoints - The New York Times”>Dietary Report Card Disappoints - The New York Times;

Hmmm, versus 1970, higher fat and higher carbs. Calorie intake is 500 per day more than in 1970. More obesity is no surprise.
