Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

So, we are at a good 8inches + snow today as far as we can figure. D and I just took doggy out for his night time duties and honestly, while I despise snow, it was quite pretty - all white and bright! A young guy was out for a run - wearing shorts and a tank top - my D says, “wow he’s dedicated” , I said " no, he’s just stupid!!!"

MOWC:

Too bad you and I can’t swap some muscle fibers. We’d probably both benefit. I definitely need some of what you’ve got!

Basement workout for me today. Sheesh. It was 48 degrees down there when I turned the little space heater on. It was in the single digits last night and only warmed up to the mid-teens today.

I start out in a 1/4 zip pullover and long Brooks pants. Go down to just the pants and a short sleeve t-shirt after the warm up and core stuff.

CORE:
Plank rows, side plank rows, and farmers carry (2 x 50lb DBs)

POWER:
Med ball overhead slams and KB bell swings (50lb)

STRENGTH:
Single leg squat
TRX inverted rows (feet elevated)
Hex bar deadlift (140 lb)
Alternating overhead DB press (2 x 30lb)

Good solid punch the clock workout. Snow shovelling tomorrow.

Well, I’m not a morning exercise person, but I was out there at 8:15 shovelling a foot of snow and digging the car out. A nice little 90 minute workout. Sheesh, that is hard work. Shoulda put the heart rate monitor on so I could have logged it as a workout. I’m definitely stronger shovelling snow, but I still get huffin’ and puffin’…

At least it’s warmed up to 19 degrees…

Oh well, good way to offset the rest of the day, which I plan to spend curled up under a down sleeping bag watching football on the couch.

20-25 minutes of stability ball exercises and stretching planned for today. And a little shopping. :)

Any lurkers with a New Year’s resolution to start Couch to 5K come January?

Second round of snow removal. You can tell it’s the first storm of the winter. It was like keystone cops with everyone jockying cars around for the plow guy. My neighbor will get everyone whipped into shape by the next storm!

Now, it’s time for a nap before hitting the couch for football. Rough day…

Four mile run, first run in a few weeks. I felt fine if slow. I expected to feel bad after sitting in a car for many hours yesterday, so it was a good surprise.

Hi all! Just checking in to see what’s new and take away a little boost of motivation. I’ve been on the same old track of walking, running a few miles, lifting weights, hiking, and core workouts. Ho hum, but maintenance has done what it’s supposed to do…H and I walked a few miles this morning-saw a pair of bald eagles. Yesterday we picked blueberries, freakishly ripening after a warm autumn, and hiked more miles. Time for a little football. C’mon Packers!

Glad to see you back, PlantMom! I have missed you! Your nature walks sound wonderful.

We had a fair amount of slush and “wintry mix” yesterday - not a lot of snow, but today we have a lot of mud. The dogs love it. Me, not so much. I’ve had two days in a row on the treadmill; yesterday 6.0 miles and today 4.8 on the “hill” setting. Made it slightly more interesting. Lots of running and planks here; am thinking of buying a Bosu which I have enjoyed using in the past.

Ran some errands then came home and baked 4 dozen cookies for the hospital auxiliary bake sale. No, I’m not a member…but my mother is! Somehow I’ve become her cookie baker. They’ll be leaving the premises shortly.

6.3 miles outside in the gloom- 32 degrees. I overdressed, but I can live with that.

Today’s exercise was an 90 minutes of shoveling. First big snow of the winter season. Spin class on Saturday morning–cutting down a tree and hauling it to the car were my afternoon activities.

I wish we’d had more snow. By the time we left our party last night it was raining. It’s still white out there, but it’s not the nice white fluffy stuff anymore.

Plantmom, you put a smile on my face to see you checking in!! Blueberry picking - I am jealous!!!

30 mins on the indoor track. Sad to say this will probably be the trend for awhile - too mich snow out there and too many people who choose not to take care of their walks and streets are too icy.

I’m seriously thinking of starting 5k to 10k in January. I like following a program as long as I can do it at my own pace, own terms. If you are a lurker and considering any new dive into Diet, exercise…etc. - join us!!

Mathmom, that’s the think about snow…it’s “pretty” for about a day - then it becomes a slushy, Brown, muddy, wet, MESS!!!

So my gym is going out of business and putting the equipment up for auction. I may bid on some of the stuff for my basement gym. I made a list of some equipment he has to sell and looked up the brand new price. If I can get some equipment for 10-25% of brand new I would be happy. I am not going to buy any big machines or aerobic equipment. I am looking at kettlebells, dumbbells, boso balls ,The step and risers, a heavy bag, an incline bench and a flat bench. He has plastic weight sets in his aerobic studio which I may buy.
I never bid at an auction before but I can not see most equipment going for much. I can see someone buying the entire lot but many of the things I want will have limited interest.

I think I will bag my run after a 5 mile hike in the canyons, up and down a rocky trail. My glutes are sore - what gives?! Gorgeous day in the valley, low 70s, sunny and pleasant. Ahhh… We ate so much for breakfast that having just the hike and no food for lunch sufficed. Even now I’m not hungry, but Mr B needs some fuel, so off to the restaurant we go.

Tom: set your price ceiling and stick to it, do not get sucked into the evil vortex of bidding wars. Good luck with the bidding!

PlantMom: good to hear from you. Even though I am luxuriating in sunshine this weekend, I am still a bit jealous - blueberries from the bushes! Yum. Love your plant/hike posts.

Awesome stuff, hops. We must get ideas from the same place!

You are not going to tempt me on the battling ropes. I don’t have room for them… thank, god!

Your leg lowers look great. Those hurt just looking at them. I have nightmares about those things. They look so simple. But, they work stuff that just doesn’t get worked normally. I’d say that I probably have about the same range of motion as you do, but it’s never easy.

BTW, you could probably turn your miniband walks into Big X walks by doing exactly what you do with the miniband, but adding two of the bands you use for the leg lowers – one diagonally from the front of your left foot to your right hand and one diagonally from your right foot to your left hand. Just raise your arms out to the sides and do the lateral shuffles. You might have to play around with lighter or heavier bands. I do two sets of 6 steps in each direction. Six to the right, six to the left, then repeat.

My guess would be the downhill. That gets my hips/glutes “activated”. :)

It’s a movement that we don’t seem to get very often in the real world.

Hey, bb, my glutes were inexplicably sore last night too. But all I had done was wrestle with six sets of lights on the terrace making a tres abstract light design in the huge Japanese maple  it did take me a couple of hours and I was on an incline the whole time with one of those idiot tree trimming poles and a 8 ft ladder, but I hadn’t thought the gymnastics involved were as trying as goblet squats or glute bridges…apparently, I thought wrong :)
