Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I have a certificate for a free week of boot camp classes so I did the first one, requiring me to get out of bed at 4:50 am - ugh. I held my own, but I just cannot do any of the burpees or jump-squat things no matter how much they exhort me to. Tomorrow"s session starts at 5:15 am which means I have to be in the car by 4:55 am. I am insane.

But I learned new kettlebell moves, Idad!

Came in to declare I am sorry and ashamed I was a slug yesterday (it was cold, gray, rainy/icy and nobody at our house wanted to do anything but watch movies/football). I pledge to do better today! At least we didn’t snack while we watched! :/

Already did my dumbbell exercises and am going outside even though it is snowing. The snow is actually more pleasant than yesterday’s grayness was. Much more pleasant. :)

kmcmom13–yes, climbing up and down a ladder is surprisingly intensive! One reason I try to stay in shape is so I CAN climb a ladder when necessary without being a cripple the next day!

Trainer and swim. This was more of a rehab day, but a promising one. The swim was plain free. Three kilometers.

PlantMom, hey there, stranger! Good to see you post. :)

3.25 mi treadmill run at the gym

pizzagirl:

Better you than me. Bootcamp at 5:15 would be the end of me!

Burpees and jump squats are so hard. Guaranteed to get you bent over panting in no time flat. And, I think that’s universally true, for everyone. They get a little easier, but not much. They use big muscles and lifting a lot of bodyweight in an explosive power jump. That’s a recipe for running out of oxygen (anaerobic) in no time flat.

6 miles on the treadmill. 9:00/8:30/8:00/7:30/7:00/6:30. Winded first 2 miles and felt stronger last 4 miles when I upped the pace? Will never understand running.

Haha, Ohio. I think I’ll never understand running, either. 2.5 easy miles running on the treadmill today, and a weight circuit focusing on arms and back. Brisk walk this evening under the full moon, with H. I made lemon blueberry whole wheat pancakes yesterday, topped with some maple syrup and had to work them off. Tonight, a walnut crusted baked chicken breast, roasted sweet potato wedges, and wonderful avocados in a green lettuce blend.

I need to be better disciplined and come back to this thread/group. I’ve missed you all!

Went for a walk outside today (2 miles) and walked very fast because it was really cold outside today (20 degrees). Followed the walk with 20 minutes of kettle bell exercises. Did swings (two hands/one hand), cleans, goblet squats, planks with one arm using kettle bell in the other arm to do a row, lunges passing kettle bell under leg, and halos.

Good to hear from you Plantmom. DebT: answer to your question from a few days ago–
the 5-mile walk/run was fine. There were way more runners than walkers, but I just stayed in back and did my thing.

I really think one of the keys for staying injury free in running ( for me) is a stretch/core/strength routine. I probably spend 30-45 minutes every day prior to running, cycling, elliptical or swimming (rare these days.) Core/strength incorporates many of the routines I’ve picked up from Idad. Stretching routines came from Flotrack videos and sports rehab folks. I’m dong both dynamic and static stretching. I know the trend is away from static stretching but i think our old bodies need it . My foam roller is the best fitness purchase I made. Probably spend 5-10 minutes rolling legs and back. I know it is a huge time commitment but I don’t think I could continue to run without the preparation. My right knee problem is almost eliminated.

If anybody is interested in a TRX Suspension Trainer, 50% off going on RIGHT NOW. Only have until tomorrow morning (12/17) I believe so you better hurry!

Thanks, hops! Have to get one. :)

Swam in the hotel’s lap pool. Not as much as Lizardly, but managed a few laps of my favorite stroke, because I hate to swim crawl without goggles. It was nice to have 2 lanes all to myself.

Hops:

TRX must be feeling a little heat from Jungle Gym XT, which is $99 all the time and, arguably, a better product (better handles, easier attachment, etc).

Yep. I think the 20 minutes I spend on warmup/stretching and core exercises at the start of every workout are the most important 60 minutes of exercise I do all week. If I couldn’t do anything else, that’s probably the 60 minutes I would do.

Basement workout for me.

CORE:
Tabata plank circuit. ValSlide painful pushaways.

POWER:
Med ball slam and box jumps.

STRENGTH:

Goblet squats (50lb KB)
3-pt Rows (50lb DB)
Box steps (2 x 30lb DB)
DB bench press (2 x 35lb DB)

Then, I vacuumed the entire Basement Gym 2.0, part of Christmas tidying up.

Idad, I could use you and your vacuum over here
My motor went up in smoke while attempting to digest a bath mat that I never should have run it over.
New one is on its way, but I have realized that with parties tomorrow and Thursday night plus my own party to throw Saturday, I am behind the 8ball :)

Of course I could and should break down and just get a cleaner in here. Grown ups who work 50 or 60 hours a week really ought to consider such things :)

This week is shaping up to be a write off on the evening circuit front. Good thing I at least have my outdoor tree trimming Tai chi on the books and that frantic vacuuming is likely to put me into an aerobic state…along with “power-walk-grocery-shopping” :)

I will just have to try to behave on the caloric front…never my strong suit when it comes to parties.

But hey, I know what to do, don’t I?!

6 indoor miles yesterday. My workouts have been far and few between. Need to get back in a routine!

I think every day I tell myself I am going to the gym is a day I don’t make it there. The best laid plans and all that. End of year is insane with everyone trying to bill and justify their existence to clients. Yesterday’s exercise consisted of dog walking. Oh well, it’s better than nothing!

KMC, I must thank you for your entertaining posts! And NM, dog walking is therapeutic and great exercise. And it’s a routine. A very necessary one. Don’t stress.

So yesterday I overdid it. Did this boot camp at 5;45 am, then went to work and sat all day, then did yoga sculpt from 7-8 pm and deep water running from 8:30-9:30 pm. I blew off the boot camp this morning and am just not motivated to move!

Ohiopublic - I could only dream of doing ONE mile at your slow pace!

sabaray–I have never enjoyed going to a gym and “working out” for an hour. I find if I spread my exercise out over the day it’s much better for me and my level of enthusiasm. This morning I did a stint on the exercise bike, later I’ll do the dumbbells and other stretches. A walk before dinner. No snow shoveling today, fortunately!

Besides, the latest research shows that an hour in the gym doesn’t undo the damage of sitting at a desk for 8 hours. So feel good about whatever you do, whenever you do it!

Wow Im happy I opened this page finally! I too am an avid fitness freak. I compete in many Spartan competitions and endurance competitions throughout the US and just completed the CIM full marathon 1 week ago. Long endurance runs on trails are my thing coupled with intense strength and conditioning sessions (tons and tons of burpees). I look forward to chiming in from time to time with you all!
