Whew, I did it. 6.3 miles on the treadmill. I am toast.

IDad- good hike. Have you tried those chemical hand warmers. Some of my running friends are using those and I’ve used them for skiing.

Good job on the run after a tough day, MaineLonghorn!

I ran on the trail. 12 degrees and sunny with a little wind. Snow chop made it very slow going and felt like running on a Bosu ball. I liked being outside and was generally warm enough (hands cold to start and toes cold at end) but the snow chop was annoying. I had an occasional short stretch in tire tracks, but not much. I’m going inside for tomorrow’s run. Collected a free guest pass for Anytime Fitness.

When I used to do a lot of cross country skiing, that was more like hiking through the woods on unbroken trails I always ended up in nothing but a flannel shirt. I’m hoping to get out on the snow shoes tomorrow.

Woah. My toes would freeze and shatter in running shoes in 12 degree weather. That’s actually when GoreTex trail runners would be handy as the liner would block 100% of the wind. Knock on wood, I’ve yet to have cold feet hiking or snow shoeing in the winter. Leather hiking boots and thick wool socks for the win…

I think I’ve tried the chemical hand warmers. Still have some in my tool box. I don’t remember if I used them skiing or motorcycle riding in the winter. My problem is typically the tips of my fingers. I finally realized that I have to wear mittens, not gloves, if I’m going to be out for an extended period. These new mittens on steroids were the bomb today. My hands were actually warm. It does put a damper on picture taking and stuff that requires dexterity. I couldn’t even skip the Christmas songs that kept popping up on my iPod…

I hear ya on the snow trails. A good bit of my little walk today was like walking on sand. Slow going, but I finally realized I wasn’t in any hurry so I just slowed down and enjoyed it.

I would really struggle trying to run in weather that cold. I try to keep my hiking/snow shoeing pace below an all out sweat when it’s cold. I don’t know if I could manage that running.

Dressing for cold weather cycling presents it’s own set of challenges. Combine ambient temperature with the wind chill of moving at 20mph, the need to ventilate sweat while blocking wind from penetrating, the risk of sweat saturating your clothing at a rest stop and then resuming riding with wet or damp clothing, and the change in ambient temperature that can occur over a 4-5 hour span and I often make myself nuts trying to figure out what is “just enough” at the beginning of a ride and what is overdressing for later on. Fortunately, there are some great technical fabrics out there for cyclists that enable a rider to wear 3 thinner layers, each with a specific function which I find to be more effective than 2 heavier layers. Base layer to wick the sweat, middle layer for warmth and top layer to allow evaporation but block wind penetration. Plus at a rest stop I can peel layers to avoid turning into a soggy Popsicle upon resuming the ride. Then there’s always the challenge of gloves - warm enough to keep fingers functional but not so bulky so as to make working the shifters unmanageable.

What I learned from Alaska runners… Plastic grocery bags make great running shoe liners.

3.1 miles for me yesterday. I really hate the new CC look…

BB, I’m hating it as well. Hate that there is no time on anything !

More snow and blowing last night = interesting pup walk this morning and 30 mins of shoveling - SO over it!!!

Hate the new CC look and I’m usually not one to complain about changes.

Some of my friends duck tape over the toes of their running shoes for warmth.

8.3 miles on the treadmill at Anytime Fitness here in PA (free 1 week guest pass). I think this is my longest treadmill run ever. This was a fantastic Precor treadmill- very new. Maybe the nicest Ive been on. It had downhill elevations as well as uphill. Nice TV screen on the machine. Really comfortable bed and the club was at a reasonable temperature. Temp outside was 22, but the trail is just too difficult right now and there are still icy patches on the roads. Did it!

From what I’m seeing, all new posts since the switchover have times; it’s just the old ones from pre-switchover do no.

How’s a guy supposed to stay accountable without being able to post the daily food log? Here’s yesterday. I managed to go hiking an only eat a 1 ounce serving of salted cashews instead of tearing into them like a rabid dog. I did have blackberries for dessert again. The ratios of fat, protein, and carbs were pretty much what I would consider ideal, thanks to a zero carb bacon/egg breakfast.

My efforts are paying off. Today was probably a good fluke, but I’m at my lowest weight since Halloween. Down 3.6 pounds since last Saturday (low fluke versus high fluke). Seven day average is down 1.5 pounds. It looks like I’ve beaten back the worst of the holiday bulge, but I’m going to try to keep riding this wave for a while to see if I can get back at the low end of my range.

My biggest concern yesterday was what to wear on my legs. The most I’ve worn previously was thin PowerDri baselayer tights under unlined softshell hiking pants. That’s been fine down to around 20. But, it was so cold yesterday that I went with heavier PowerStretch fleece tights under the same hiking pants. That turned out to be just about perfect. That’s about all I’ve got for leg warmth, although I could switch out hiking pants for waterproof ski pants that would block 100% of the wind and be warmer. Or, add rain pants as a third layer, which is always an “emergency layer” in my pack.

My warmest pants for blizzard snow shovelling are 200 wt fleece pants under rain shell pants. That combo is incredibly warm, but a bit much for hiking… I sent my old insulated ski pants to Goodwill when I thought I’d never fit in them (the size I wear now). Now tempted to replace them. I like the fleece and shell pant combo better because I can come inside, take off the shell pants and drink hot coffee in the fleece pants!

Well we did get outside to the local woods. Decided there wasn’t enough snow to bother with snowshoes so we just wore our Sorels. It’s amazing - we had over a foot of snow and it’s been cold, but it’s just evaporated to a few inches, less on the trails. We walked about an hour - saw some deer, and I think all the Canada geese in town on a bit of unfrozen river. I don’t know where the wild turkeys are hiding - no sign of them. I wore jeans, mittens, a fleece hat and my usual winter jacket. The space between my knees and butt got a little chilly, but we were only out for a little over an hour. I might wear my ski pants next time.

PT exercises and 30 minutes on NuStep (upped the resistance a notch today).

Motivating song: Yellow - Coldplay (I think my head started bopping around a bit to coordinate with the hands and legs going)

MOWC- I went to the store today and looked at the Landice 7. Did you upgrade to the stronger shocks (all red on the brochure versus two red and one blue)? Total came to about 4200.

No. The very good salesperson (knew his stuff) said it was unnecessary and would feel too soft. My friend who tried out every treadmill before she chose the Landice said the same thing, the regular bed is pretty cushioned, but I don’t think it’s as cushioned as the Precor I was on today.

Ok, cool. Are you now thinking of getting the precor? Did the price you mentioned include delivery and setup?

Here’s the treadmill, Busyparent.

Holy cow >11000! I was shaking thinking about spending 4000 on the Landice! Thx for the link.

Yeah. I’m guessing it’s the one MOWC means because it has that nice screen, the feel under the feet, is commercial grade, and has the decline. The Precor 9.35 home treadmill does offer 2% decline.

Teri- I LOVE Coldplay. DD and I saw them in 2012. They have amazing energy and talent!
MLH- Great job with your running. Your commitment is inspiring!
Idad- You remind me of how important it is to be mindful of what I eat. Congratulations on tracking your calories and seeing great progress on the scale.
MOWC- I loved hearing about your adventure with the cat and weights. I’m glad your trip has been smooth.

I had a really great week. I walked between 3.5 and 5.5 miles each day at a good clip. My eating has been fairly “clean” and I avoided the “hijacking” by exercising first thing in the morning. I have been working on the mental side of exercising and I believe I am forming some great habits. I’m looking forward to moving forward in February and reaching my goal of returning to Masters swimming in September!
