Free weights today. Attire: old juicy pants inherited from D, ratty tee and my favorite Ugg slippers. These are my house clothes (although I gather that some wear this stuff to public places!).

Re: Lulu clothing for men. The shorts are awesome, according to Mr B. He did not know they were from Lulu until I told him. He was bummed that they were not see through. :p

My latest fashion statement is wearing a set of Power Dry baselayer top and bottoms (re-purposed from the obsolete LARGE size closet) as cold weather pajamas. Most comfortable PJs ever. One of these nights, I’m going to try the Patagonia base layers. That will probably be the most comfortable PJs AND the most expensive PJs I’ve ever worn… :)

No UGGS for me. Tom Brady is the only guy in NE who wears them, I think. I have been sporting a pair of Crocs my D gave me for my birthday. Nice change of pace from topsiders.

TRX tonight. Attire - beat up ratty, torn shorts my wife wants to throw out and a tank top. My daughter would never approve, but oh so comfy and broken in. One of the advantages of my basement gym is that there’s no dress code .

Hey everyone - thanks for those offering support for my back; unfortunately, it has not really gotten better. But is hasn’t necessarily kept me from doing some walking while here. Went up to Griffith Park and Observatory last night for sunset, but because it was a holiday today and so many people had off, the park was packed for sunset and we had to park a ways away and walk up. I did fine with it. It’s only the extended sitting that starts to bother me. It’s never been bad enough that I feel like I need to take something for it, but it does hinder me from certain movements/motions. I drive a SUV at home, and on this trip realize I could never go back to a sedan again after getting in and out of this rental car - that part has not been fun, either. I’ve actually been eating relatively healthy since being here, but being in CA makes that MUCH easier than being in the midwest in winter! Will get home close to midnight tomorrow night so I might forego the water aerobics class Wednesday morning and just meet with the trainer; then I see the PT in the afternoon, and hope to get back on track.

Whoever asked about the Chobani; it’s my one weakness that, if anyone ever told me I’d have to give it up, I just might die. I usually eat at least two a day, but the only flavor I ever get is the peach. Ideally I’d like to go strictly plain Greek yogurt and add my own fruit (with perhaps a bit of Stevia), but that’s a goal down the road.

Fashion report from the hill: long underwear leo’s with lederhosen-style socks; black track pants, sparkly black wife beater covered by formerly fat girl hoodie. Grandmas home-knit hat and cowl, north face boots, black hooded formerly fat girl winter jacket possibly made of garbage bags, topped with wound black scarf covering face and neon glove-mitts. I could do black box hand pantomime. Ninja fashion.

Ya think its time to go shopping? :)

Dreading hill today as we had boatloads of snow yesterday! Had my trail nicely tramped down from a few days reprieve.

25 miles on the recumbent bike at level 5. I am a sweaty mess…as usual. I attach my fitbit to my shoe but it still doesn’t count my steps accurately. Is there a tech gadget that crosses over from bike to walking???

Yes, but it requires installing wheel and pedal sensors on the bike, so it won’t help in a gym setting.

KMC and MKAT:

Ya’ll are giving me a run for my money. I thought I had the title of worst workout fashion locked up when I made a trip to WalMart to buy $6 Fruit of the Loom X-LARGE cotton workout shorts and X-LARGE cotton t shirts (with pocket for the iPod). I was quite the fashion plate at 250 pounds on the yard-sale exercise bike, dripping sweat, and my belly bouncing off the the top of my thighs doing intervals as iPod nazi barked out the orders.

Standard snow shoeing or skiing outfits on the Audubon center trails are jeans and a winter ski parka. I would be drenched.

Got into my car to go to the gym and I see my elderly neighbor coming down my driveway. Turns out that she got her car stuck in a snowbank as she was backing out of her driveway. I went over to see if I could do anything, but she was on sheet of ice and needed to have someone pull the car out. She was afraid to go up her driveway and wait in her house because of the ice on her driveway. So I invited her in and we have coffee and wait for the tow guy. He comes and pulls the car out and she asks me if I am comfortable driving in snow and can I take her to the post office (3 miles away). By now, there’s a few inches of snow. I ended up driving her in her car to the post office. When we arrive home, I drove her up the top of the driveway and parked her car. Just as I get out of the car, my feet went out from under me and I went down on the ice. I’ve never fallen on ice like that. It really hurt my hip (now I’m wondering who’s the elderly neighbor)–anyway, I managed to get up and walked in the snow bank along the side of her driveway. Got in my house and my hip was aching. I immediately started icing it. Called my EMT friend who assured me that if it were broken I wouldn’t be able to walk. I guess this will be a rest day for me.

Bromfield–so sorry about your fall especially after being such a help to your neighbor.

I need to throw away the scale. Yesterday, after over a week of clean eating and seeing the scale down, I get on and it’s up 4 #! What the heck? I figured water weight or something, but I immediately went an ate a piece of leftover birthday key lime pie and chocolate cookies :(

Ouch, Brom! It truly requires walking like you are on eggshells out there - and sometimes even that is not enough! Hope a day or two rest results in a better feeling hip and not too much bruising!

Whenever you gain an odd amount of weight or lose an odd amount of weight, I would suggest re-weighing in the next 24-48 hours a few times to truly see what the damage or better yet, loss might be.

I personally DO believe in throwing away the scale and relying on other ways of feeling progress but I know that’s not for everyone. :)

Ouch. You were nice to drive the neighbor to the post office. I probably would have asked if it was really necessary to go out in a snow storm! Hopefully a little ice and rest will fix it up.

I think I probably chipped my elbow when I fell on the stairs a couple weeks ago. Didn’t hurt for week and still doesn’t hurt at all to move it or anything, but hurts like crazy if it touch it in one spot. Maybe a bone bruise. Who knows? I can 't imagine there’s anything to be done about it.

Bromfield- so sorry you fell. I’m sure you will be sore, but hopefully you will heal up quickly. I am SO afraid of ice!
busyparent- the scale is not being my friend, either. I still have the 3-4 pounds of fall/winter gluttony weight that don’t seem to want to leave me.

Ouch, Bromfield! Rest and ice and a bit of vit I for your sore hip - if this does not take care of the problem in a few days, you might want to see a doctor. Hope the ankle is OK.

busyparent - for me 4 lb gain in one week would be the result of eating salty foods or a sign that I am about to get my monthly gift from Mother Nature. There is no way you consumed an extra 12,000 calories in one week if you’ve been eating cleanly! The gain will evaporate soon… Juts do not use eating pie as a way to comfort yourself.

Congratulations on the 9 days without soda!

The scale works for some people, not for others. It’s normal to have big day to day swings. Even a four pound swing during the course of a single day wouldn’t be that far fetched.

Various foods and even exercise can result in water retention that show up on the scale. Heck, my scale says I gained 1.6 pounds in one day Monday morning.

Thanks for the encouragment. It shows my general problem with food. I am a binge eater and need to stop thinking of food/weight and think of food/ healthy lifestyle and forget about the day to day weigh in. It’s ultimately not healthy for me to focus on the number, but boy do I want to get back to where I was last fall and I want to get there yesterday.

In the smoking thread someone mentioned smoking dreams. I had never heard of such dreams, but I have eating dreams. I am at a buffet and absolutely stuff myself with all the yummies and the entire time I’m thinking this is not good, you will regret this etc. When I wake up I think, boy, I will have to really eat clean today to make up for that dream! mental. I went through an anorexic period while in college so this has been a long time issue for me, but on the plus side, this is the longest I have gone w/o re-gaining all I lost, and am feeling pretty good about getting off what I did regain.

I’m up a pound since yesterday, but I ate under 1800 calories. Water weight.

busyparent, kudos! Huge progress. Maybe daily weigh in is a good idea - as long as you do not obsess with the daily number but instead keep track of your weekly average, like idad does. I sort of do this in a paperless way - I compute the average and keep the number in my noggin. :)

A bit o’ running at the gym this morning for me.

Bromfield, ow, feel better soon. You too, Teri.

Busyparent, one thing crosses my mind. Do you think any of the difficulty you have experienced over the years could be related to something medical? I have no idea what, thinking of something like a thyroid problem. Just wondering if for any reason it might be helpful to have a doctor run some tests
