3 miles outside walking the dog. I had planned on going to the gym but the sun is shining and it is 46 degrees! The sidewalks are sloppy and there is lots of standing water but it is so nice out that I couldn’t resist.

My husband called and told me I need to get out and take my run at his park today cause it’s so beautiful - thanks for sharing that husband when I am stuck inside at work and have errands to be done afterwards!!! It’s not a scheduled run day and I want to not overdo it this week with a race this weekend so I will settle for the same NM - a nice doggie walk. :)

5 miles at the beach today. Beautiful day, but sadly, not a beautiful run, just felt tired the whole way. Some days are like that.

New workout today.

Warm up, mobility, stretching
Same routine as I’ve been doing for several months. Pretty much a “greatest hits” list from all the warm up type stuff I’ve ever done. I continue to make qualitative improvements in all of these. Works all of the joints. Feels great. Takes about 12 minutes. Can’t think of a good reason to change it. It incorporates most of Mike Boyle’s Functional Movement Screen corrective exercises.

Kneeling Hip flexor stretch
Quadruped hip extension
Single leg hip lift
Quadruped thoracic rotation
Wall Slides
Squat to Stand
Lateral lunges
Push up position Ankle mobility
Band assisted leg lowering
Big X walk
Walking lunges
Agility Ladder Icky Shuffle forward
Agility Ladder Ali Shuffle

Core

ValSlide alligator crawl
Twisting side plank
Cable chop

Power

Med ball slam
DB snatch (30 lb DB, plan to bump this up to 35)

Strength superset
3 sets. 6 reps of everything, 12 of KB swing

TRX Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat
Chin up
KB swing (50 lb DB)
Alternating bench press (2 x 40 lb DB)

This is the heaviest I’ve ever done the rear foot elevated split squat and the first time I’ve tried the TRX version with 60 lbs. Challenging, but not impossible for six reps per leg. I haven’t done chinups in several months and I could only do four per set. My goal is to get to six. Using the KB swing in the strength workout lets me go pretty hard at them (especially because I’m so happy to skip the hex bar deadlifts for a while). This is the heaviest I’ve done on the alternating bench press – hold one weight outstretched while doing 6 reps on one arm, then holding that arm outstretched while doing six reps on the other arm. 2 x 40 lbs was OK. Great exercise.

iDad- You should become a personal trainer. You know SO much and would be great at it! Except for the part about being stuck in a gym. You would need to take on private clients and work from your basement!

Today it was 71 after work. Just gorgeous. Last Monday was the ice storm and I couldn’t even leave my house. 4 miles after work in the LIGHT!!! Everyone in the world was out on the path- with kids and dogs.

Any food scale recommendations? Tried searching and got a couple of references to scales, but nothing specific (probably since I don’t know brand names). Thanks!

Oh, and I also got a little toe touching exercise this morning. Getting bent over for a TicketMaster presale, but I did manage to snag ticket to fun summer concert:

<a href=“Queen + Adam Lambert iHeartRadio Complete HD 1080p concert - YouTube”>Queen + Adam Lambert iHeartRadio Complete HD 1080p concert - YouTube;

Counting Down:

I think all of the kitchen scales are pretty much the same. I bought this one because I thought it looked cool and would be easy to wipe clean:

http://www.amazon.com/Escali-Pound-Kilogram-Digital-Scale/dp/B0051ZOJFQ

The only problem is that it uses lithium watch batteries and eat them like I eat salted cashews. If I had to do over, I’d probably sacrifice a little sleek for something that takes AAA or AA batteries.

5.5 miles outside power walk. The weather is beautiful outside in MA today. Thanks everyone for the great insight into how you all allocate calories. I read each post and I appreciate the information!

Headed to Boston Thursday for some track racing. What is the one thing I should try and do in Boston from a tourist standpoint? Local flavor or tourist trap- doesn’t matter.

I’ll defer to iDad, but I like Legal Seafood and cannolis. And run along the river.

I’m really not much of a Boston expert, but…

a) a run or walk along the Charles River (on either the Boston side or the Cambridge side) would be pretty nice if the weather is OK as it looks to be on Friday and Sunday.

b) a walk around the Boston Common with a detour up and down Newbury Street to gawk at all the boutique stores.

c) For food, it would be hard to beat finding an Italian restaurant in the North End and capping it off with a cannoli from Mike’s Pastry or Maria’s Pastry.

http://www.bigredkitchen.com/2010/11/and-the-winner-is-north-ends-best-cannoli-marias-pastry/

Okay, so I may have to retire the hill until it gets either warmer or colder! Several breakthroughs this a.m., including a fall. Very destabilizing and not great for the knees or ankles!

Guess its the dreadmill for me tomorrow :)

Be careful KMC!!!

Good thing I am in an office with no windows for two reasons. It is currently sunny and warmish outside (40 at 10am!) and I am ITCHING to get my workout bag out of my car and go running! Reason 2: overnight the weather is going to go to heck and outside my windows I don’t have will be 8 inches of snow. Seriously, is this weather REAL??!

Sad to report but I won’t be running my 8k this weekend. :(.

Lots of reasons but it was too stressful to put one more thing into my schedule. The run was not local but 2 hours away and we would have to spend the night. My H has a herniated disc in his neck and is scheduled for surgery in two weeks. We have to travel for the surgery and for pre-op doctor appointments. It is so uncomfortable for my H to drive that I am driving him to all of these appointments and the thought of another trip was so stressful. Just couldn’t do it. Besides it looks to be very cold that morning and it is really hard (almost impossible) to run when it’s so cold.

So I pulled the plug late last week. I’m very sad but relieved not to travel this weekend. I had a mini meltdown yesterday when we drove 100 miles for a pre-op appointment with a snotty staff member who wouldn’t answer our questions and was totally unnecessary. Drove 4 hours for a 5 minute meeting that could have been done with mail and fax. Frustrating.

So sorry for the difficulties deb922. Hope the surgery goes well and your H finds some relief and your stress is relieved.

3.6 miles on the dreadmill.

So sorry to hear that, deb. I mean about your hubby - hope his surgery and recovery will go well. There will always be another 8k for you! The most important thing is that you trained.

^^^ Exactly. Another race is always there and you have started the road to it! Sending good thoughts for improvement for your husband and a reduction in stress for you as you head to surgery and recovery with him.

deb:

Ouch. I was hoping your hubby’s cervical disk would clear up. That is such a painful injury. There will be other races.

kmcmom:

In the NH hiking condition reports, that is known as “monorail (unstable)”. All the snow softens and melts except where it is compacted by months of hiking. So you end up with monorail paths of frozen snow. That’s fine as long as the monorail is (stable), but once you start sinking in, that’s the end of hiking, at least for me.

Hope your fall didn’t do any damage. I hate taking a dive like that.

2.5 miles on an outside trail. Keeping things easy this week before my planned race Sunday. Is it possible that 8-12 inches of snow will melt by Sunday??!
