It was a gorgeous day so I brought the dog along with me to force me to walk more.
Drive to the eye dr, walk the dog before & after the appt.( it was pretty cool this morning so he was good in the car)
Took stairs to the 4thfloor
Took him to the dog park, then walked the trails at the beach.
When H got home, talked him into walking with me up and down Phinney Ridge. Had to catch a little three yr old when we walked by the park who wanted to see the dog. (They are very fast!)
I’m getting better at going up and down hills considering I have been going slow because I don’t want to over do it, so I am very happy.

Walked three miles outside. I am very happy with my Hokas. No problems with shin splints! Hooray! My girls think the Hokas look like old moon boots but I don’t care as they are very comfortable and I have no pain! :)

Enduralyte capsules work great. Have used them for years in conditions even as extreme as 100 mile unshaded rides in 90+ degree heat. Enables you to replace lost electrolytes on the fly without consuming sickeningly sweet flavored drinks. Much easier on the gastro-intestinal tract. You may also want to try Cliff Blocks for quick energy replacement on the go. Easy to carry in a pocket, easy to chew and absorb. With both of these, however, try them out during a practice run and not for the first time at a race or event to make sure they sit well with you.

Summer season is upon us, and with it come opportunities to do all sorts of crazy things. D forwarded me this link, so I’m passing it along with a mesage to be careful (not that we old stumps could ever do such things, but our kids might):

<a href=“CDC: Tough Mudder participants got diarrhea from swallowing feces-tainted mud”>Health News - New York Daily News;

Well, it reminded me of the reason why I never warmed up to the idea of trying a triathlon… Too many Canada geese!

I think tough mudder races are only for people who wear Vibram 5-Fingers… :)

NM- Glad you like the Hokas. They are odd looking, but have been completely embraced by a lot of runners and triathletes- and Leo Manzano is now a Hoka sponsored athlete. They are developing track spikes for him, since he’s a miler! He is a wonderful young Hispanic athlete- ran against my son in high school.

Idad: Ex-Officio sizes must be very generous. I recently ordered two women’s hoodies from them–had to return both for a smaller size.

Worked with my trainer today: heavy weights, including chest press and leg press and a bunch of kettle bell swings plus battle ropes, planks, lunges, and squats. Going for a 4 mile walk this afternoon. Did a hips and hamstrings yoga class last night. Spent 4 hours on Sunday getting planters on deck ready for planting. Once we had all the dirt out of the planters (we were adding new soil/mulch) we had to carry the old dirt away. It was like doing farmer carry walks–I had two big buckets of dirt that I was hauling from the deck, down steps, and across the yard–must have done it 20 times.

NMinn, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that your shin splints are gone. Hokas are great shoes and, as far as the looks go, they are so retro-cool looking IMO. B-) The right pair of shoes makes a huge difference! Hokas and Brooks’ Pure shoes are my favorites. I need to treat myself to a new pair with more breathable uppers (as recommended by our resident Hokas guru, MOfWC).

Someone was asking the other day about good headphones (Deb922?) - I’m interested myself and just came across this article - maybe a good starting spot for looking:

Hello everyone! Long time no visit this thread – since before the site conversion! I’ve been on a couple of other threads, but haven’t felt I deserved to post here since I’d fallen off the exercise bandwagon – again. I may have posted here back in January about missing the bottom step coming downstairs in the early morning, and doing something to my foot. This was right before we were due to go to FL for 2+ weeks. Anyway, long story short, it turns out I broke my 5th metatarsal (leading to little toe) – but I didn’t discover that until I finally went for an x-ray 4 weeks after the event. Fortunately the orthopedist said there wasn’t anything out of line. and even if I had come in right away, he wouldn’t have done any treatment. BUT, I had to baby that foot for quite a few weeks. Three days before I was due to return to the ortho for a final x-ray to verify all was OK, I managed to catch my little toe on a chair leg – yes, the little toe on the same foot! And yup, you guessed it – my toe was broken. Honestly, I’ve never felt like such a klutz!!! Again, no special treatment for the break.

Add a new puppy (she arrived in mid-March) to the craziness, and exercise had definitely taken a backseat! I finally went back to the gym yesterday. I know I’ll be sore from the weights, but it’s still a good thing.

Good to see the gang is still here!

An injured baby toe is amazingly painful. Raise your hand if you’ve caught your baby toe on a chair, table, etc.!! Yep, that’s what I thought! ;)

Ouch CBBBlinker! I broke my baby toe a couple of years ago, it took a long long time to heal. Welcome back!

Welcome back CBB- Don’t ever stay away because of falling off the wagon. We’ve all done that at some level, whether it be with food, taking care of ourselves, or exercise. We celebrate successes and support each other through lapses.

4 miles this morning and still not feeling great. My blood work did not show any issues- more on that later. I think I just tanked in the Sunday 10 miler and haven’t quite recovered. Gorgeous weather right now in the mornings (gets hot during the day) so I wish I felt a little more perky out there! Did see 5 bunnies, which is awesome. Weight is lowest so far this year, which is good, too, and since it’s 2 days in a row maybe not just from dehydration. (I am certainly hydrated…) Not a particularly good lunch today- Chik Fil-et at a meeting. No choice except spicy or regular chicken sandwich/chips/cookie. It sure tasted good, though.

Sorry you are still not feeling well MOWC. That stinks. Abasket thanks for the article, I’m going to order the BlueBuds X by JayBird, I’ll report back when I get them.

3 mile run, the big news is that I RAN 3 miles! Only one, one minute walk break in the middle to get my heart rate down at the half way point but other than that I ran the entire time. Whoo hoo! I am beyond happy. The weather was perfect, 50 and sunny. Been waiting for these days. :)

Now if I can just get the H back to work full time. His follow up appt is next week. Here’s hoping he gets the ok to work full time and drive. He’s pretty down about not being able to do anything.

NM, I’m glad you’re feeling better with the Hokas. I personally do not care what shoes look like - if my feet and legs feel good, that’s all that matters!

Bromfield, am I thinking of someone else or do you have a big walk coming up soon?

It is hot here and tons of pollen which is making me miserable. My eyes are so crusty I just can’t be outside so to the treadmill it was for 6 fun-filled, exciting miles. I’m going to try and get up early tomorrow so I can get outside for a run. I’m having a hard time dragging out of bed.

CBB, glad to see you back over here. Having recently introduced a puppy into the family, I certainly sympathize. I can’t imagine keeping up with her with a broken toe or two. Ouch.

Thanks all for the “Welcome Backs.” I guess I didn’t have a “bad” break on my little toe – it actually feels quite good after 4 1/2 weeks. I figure I’ll wait til next week to try running – and then, only on the treadmill. The ortho said to be careful for a while about uneven footing.

Congrats on the 3 miles, deb. That was a H-U-G-E achievement for me. Of course then I lost it again … When I started up again in January I was trying the Jeff Galloway method of run/walk. That was working really well for me, so I’ll start that up again nest week.

Re: headphones – I’ve tried several. I’ve used Sony over the ear ones for several years - they stay on when I run, and the sound quality is decent. BUT, I wanted an in-ear pair. Regular earbuds don’t stay in my ears. When Yurbuds first hit the stores, I bought a pair since they were guaranteed to stay in. They did, until I started running – when I started sweating, they just slipped out. I contacted the company and I’m supposed to send for a free, different size ear piece. I also tried a pair of Sennheiser sport headphones: <a href=“All Headphones | Sennheiser”>http://en-us.sennheiser.com/sport-headphone-running-jogging-workouts-cx-685</a> They stay in my ear just fine, but the sound quality is incredibly poor. Really ticked me off since they were more money than I really wanted to spend. I’m back to using the Sonys, but plan to get the new ear pieces for the Yurbuds.

Welcome back CBBBLINKER!

I’ve recently started the run/walk/run method. It’s been working really well for me, but I wanted to try to run without the walking. So I feel pretty good about today, because it felt good and not misreable. I downloaded a Jeff Galloway app for my phone, I think it’s pretty helpful.

My tj Maxx has some yurbuds, if you are looking for some. They were really cheap as I remember.

Owwwweeee. I broke one of my toes about 10 years ago when I walked into a dark closet and smashed my toe into a dumbbell. There was no treatment but to stay off of it. I couldn’t even wear a shoe for a while. I’m glad yours has healed, CBB.

Bromfield, nice workouts today!

This morning was beautiful and I had a nice walk (1.5 miles) However, with 90 degree temps, I headed to the gym this afternoon for 3.5 miles of treadmill running.

3.1 and done! My pace is consistently under 11 mins these days - a big accomplishment for me! Tonight’s average was 10.28 and the last mile was the best pace at just over 10 min/mile.

Our cats for some reason like to chew on headphones and trash them. Plus my kids seem to lose them. I buy 5 at a time for a buck a piece at dollar tree.

2 mile trail run and 8 up/down hill repeats. Was listening to a Pete Magill podcast on Masters Running. Said that Masters runners maintain same cadence but loose stride length. He mentioned that hills are a good workout to increase stride length. Running hard up the hill as well as fast ( but controlled) down the hill supposedly help.
