I just ran my first half at the end of April. I really enjoyed it. I was thinking of doing another half in November or possibly a full. I’m going to decide at the end of May - before the price goes up again! I got really tired of training and a few times asked myself “why am I doing this again” - but it was the best feeling to cross that finish line and know that I had done it. Yours is a great success story - I love how you persevered.

I am in awe. I exercise, and I run about 2.2 miles in my half hour on the treadmill, but I don’t think I could do a marathon if my life depended on it. Thankfully, it doesn’t. Congratulations!!!

ETA: I thought you were going to post that you became very rich, and I was thinking what poor taste that would have been.

Wow that many? Running a marthon is an incredible accomplishment. Congrats!

I was told that there are almost no people who ran 2 marathons - it is either 1 or 3+. First-timers either hate it so much they never do it again or they get hooked on the race adrenaline. Congrats on becoming a junkie! :)

According to this 2012 study, only 0.5% of the US population has completed a full marathon. I did that this past Sunday to join the 26.2 mile club.!!!

My time was little over 4 hours and 43 minutes - longer than my target of 4 hour 30 minutes. But I crossed the finish line none the less.

Looking back, I could barely walk a mile about 2 years ago. Over 30 years of sedentary lifestyle got me into a very poor physical condition. My doctor gave me tow choices - taking pills for the rest of your life or starting exercising. The pills were very expensive so I picked up exercising.

The rest is the history.

Thank you for your time.

Congrats DadII. Great accomplishment!

Congratulations DadII, that is wonderful to hear! We’ve all been wondering how you were doing with your running.

Terriwtt, sorry to hear about your health issues, but good to hear you are on your way to recovery!

Teri
Sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. Glad you are able and willing to walk as that really speeds healing. Sending a cooked dinner.

Congrats DadII! So happy you came here to share! Hope everything is going well for you and your family.

Teri, sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. My H had spinal surgery 6 weeks ago. He is still on restrictions and it’s been hard. Going for his post op appointment next week, can’t wait to get some of these restrictions lifted. So can commiserate with your situation. Good for you to get going, I know physical exercise can only help the healing process.

Teri, your attitude is going to be on your side for healing- I can tell! So sorry for you to have to deal with this, but the hardest part , the surgery, is done and now patience comes into play. You had an exercise routine, you will be able to pick it back up when the time is right. Thanks for sharing your story. <3

DadII - knew you had the mind for it!

Teri:

Aaargh. That doesn’t sound like any fun at all. Hopefully, you heal up quickly from the surgery!

Basement for me on a drizzly day. We are at the height of pollen season and I’m carrying a Kleenex box around. Still, a good solid workout.

Congrats, DadII on your marathon!

Terri, I’m sending you the healing mojo, and am glad you had an early diagnosis as that can be tricky to catch. Kudos also on the “keeping moving” – I know it takes something to do that when healing but have a hunch a bit of walking will help your recovery :)

teri – welcome back! Sending quick healing vibes your way. Even if it takes some time to get back to where you were, you’re starting off in a much better place than most – like the woman on that other forum you mentioned! Glad to hear things were caught early.

Congrats on the marathon DadII. I don’t think that’s on my “To Do” list, but never say never!

I’m still sore from starting up at the gym again, but I went 5 days in a row, so I’m starting to feel as if I’m getting back in the groove. I did really well all week food-wise, too – until last night. H & I drove to my hometown to celebrate my Dad’s 86th birthday with my brothers and their families. I did the best I could, but eating out is always a challenge. I have summer clothes that don’t fit, and at some point summer will actually arrive here …

Teri, let me add my good wishes for your quick recovery. I know how frustrating it can be to not exercise vigorously, but I’ve no doubt the walking will be a big help to your recovery.

CBB, I’m impressed with 5 days in a row! I have not done well food wise. Dinner last night was bread and wine. Not good. Today will be better.

Thanks everyone - I am happy to report, that just being back on this thread, I was motivated to double-check my daily pond route with a web pedometer, and I learned that my route is actually 1/4 mile around the pond, and not 1/5. I will take absolutely every tenth of a mile I can get. But it all means I’ve been walking farther than I thought! And I’m actually doing a mile in about 22 minutes, which is less than I thought, too.

For about the first ten days post-surgery, I also lost my appetite, and have lost about 7 lbs. (OK… I’ll give all the parts they removed from me about a lb. of that), but I would love to keep it all off. Unfortunately, over the last couple of days the appetite has started to come back. Maybe it’ll even out as the swelling begins to go down. I really feel like I’m about five months pregnant, which is not fun, but that’s got to add some weight temporarily, right?

Congratulations on your marathon Dad2.

Keep healing and walking, Teri.

Rest day for me–no gym. Going with H to a nursery two hours away to indulge his plant buying habit. I’m sure I’ll be hauling plants to and from the car–so I will count that as exercise.

6.2 miles run/walk/run. Went out last night for an indulgent dinner, stomach did not feel good today. Ugh! But it’s done so I’m happy.

I feel pretty confident in using the word “never” for me running a marathon! I am definitely not worthy… ^:)^

Thanks, Deb, and everyone.
