<p>I just got Nna Teicholz’ book delivered to my Kindle last night (it was released today). I was going to start it, but couldn’t keep my eyes open after hiking. </p>

<p>The only danger in the places I hike would be getting lost or falling and injuring myself. I don’t think it’s a guy thing, either. I see just as many solo women hiking as solo guys. It’s just not a target rich environment for criminal activity! :slight_smile: </p>

<p>I’m pretty well covered on the “lost” part. I have a map and compass for backup, but almost always download an actual GPS track of the trails I’ll be hiking, so I can make sure my GPS location follows the trail on the GPS map. The White Mountain Guide online version lets you create any custom route (e.g. Start at this trailhead, hike to this waterfall, then that summit, and return to the trailhead by that trail…) and download directions, distances, and a GPS track. Very cool… And, I have the GPS tracks from all the hikes I’ve done. These are pretty well travelled hiking trails. They aren’t hard to follow.</p>

<p>The one that might catch me out someday is twisting an ankle. It would have to be pretty bad to not be able to limp along at all after letting it settle down for 15 minutes. And, there’s always the cellphone! I always carry enough clothing layers and a little emergency shelter to survive a few hours waiting for the rescue!</p>

<p>MoWC, my Link is dead. I contacted mio support and they are going to replace it. I don’t know what happened. I thought at first that it just needed charging, but plugging it in didn’t make it wake up. I sent them an email describing the problem and they just said they would replace it.</p>

<p>My regular 3.6 mile loop. I had only 30 minutes, so that was it for tonight. I printed out the training sheet for the next race - yay! Pinned it on the wall in the kitchen to serve as a motivational poster. :)</p>

<p>Ok, here comes my review of Fed Up. </p>

<p>First, I have to say that movie theaters will not embrace it with arms wide open - who in their sane mind will buy mega buckets of popcorn and sodas to watch a movie about the damage said snacks do to our health? And since movie theaters are in the business of selling junk food, this will cut into their bottom line. Besides, it is a documentary… There are no explosions or spies or aliens:…
I was pleasantly surprised that among about 50 people in the theater, only one guy unwrapped a huge candy bar. He sheepishly took a couple of bites and hid the candy in his pocket. :wink: The rest of the movie goers sat quietly sipping thieir water and Numi teas.
The movie follows the everyday lives of 4 overweight teens and their families who struggle with their weight issues, and how that they realize that there is no easy way out of their sad situations. The movie brings up good arguments why exercise alone is not going to undo the damage that nasty nutrition does to our bodies. The experts, including Robert Lustig, do a great job of explaining fairly complex scientific concepts in down to Earth, plain English, such as why sugar from fruit has a different effect on our bodies than the same amount of sugar from soda. The movie paints a grim picture of how we spiraled into this sugar overload and doubled our consumption of sugar over the last few decades. One interesting fact that I did not know: when WHO decided to publish guidelines that no more than 10% of daily calories had to come from sugar, the US government, lobbied by the food industry, threatened to cut off the US WHO funding. The guidelines were never published… BTW, there is still no such thing as %DV for sugar on nutrition labels. Oh, and one more interesting tidbit. Whenever the government tries to do something that threatens to curb the big bad food’s advertising or marketing of junk, the food industry pulls out their old trick - it rallies the public against the government’s involvement in their lives. Works like a charm - without failing! I highly recommend watching Fed Up even if you are convinced that sugar is what is wrecking our nation’s health.</p>

<p>I can’t wait to see FedUp. I’ll keep checking for the Amazon release.</p>

<p>Re…hiking alone…obviously I don’t give it a second thought in my own woods, but in truth, I don’t really worry on any trail. Which is not to say mch and mcson don’t…mcson recently requested I carry bear spray after a suspected wolf sighting and a previous black bear report up the road. IME they can REALLY hear me coming so I’m unlikely to surprise anyone or anything up there :slight_smile: Plus I have my walking sticks and microspikes so I’m weaponized ;)</p>

<p>However, being aware of my surroundings is why I don’t listen to music anymore on the trail.</p>

<p>We have bears around our home at the lake. D2 has literally run across a few as she runs around the lake. We have tried to get her to carry spray but she just rolls her eyes. I also worry about her solitary long runs on deserted country roads where there are hunters. </p>

<p>In 2013 when I ran Cummins Falls Marathon (inaugural) and was SO alone since it turned out to be a very small marathon, I came across some hunters! They had on bright orange- I did not! It was a little disconcerting and not what I wanted at mile 15 in a tough marathon. I survived…</p>

<p>Wow, bears and hunters… yikes. When I run on the beer trail at certain times of the day, I keep my eyes wide open for weirdos (there have been incidents of attacks on female runners on the trail - not many, but still). My plan is to accelerate like a bat out of hell and to jump in the river. No rapist, sane or insane, would want to follow.</p>

<p>Well, a good thing about treadmill running/walking is no bears! I did a total of 3.5+ miles this morning, but I have to say my legs felt like heavy mush! I should have expected this – the first day back after a long hiatus is OK/not bad. After that, though, it’s all downhill for the next several days. I plowed through, but was VERY glad to finish. And I just realized today that maybe doing planks isn’t such a great idea, considering the pressure it puts on my toes …</p>

<p>Headed back to Cambridge this afternoon, so tomorrow morning I get to go back to my circuit around Fresh Pond – unless it’s pouring rain. </p>

<p>I read the review link you posted idad. Honestly, it’s getting so I have no idea what I’m supposed to be eating! But, considering how good things taste when cooked in butter, I can be swayed …</p>

<p>I feel safe walking on the roads or trails in my town, but I am a little fearful of going out to a hiking area all alone. It’s probably not rational but I guess I’ve watched too many episodes of Criminal Minds and think there’s some crazed serial killer lurking on the trail.</p>

<p>Did a hot yoga class today and walked 2,5 miles with a friend this am.</p>

<p>Around here, the trail maintenance guys seem to prefer the [Sven</a> Saw](<a href=“http://www.svensaw.com/]Sven”>http://www.svensaw.com/). It’s a clever little folding saw that is easy to stick in a backpack. It’s early in the season, though. A lot of the accumulated junk from winter is still being cleared.</p>

<p>People see bears and moose and whatever hiking in NH, but I have never read a single story of any hiker having any kind of harmful encounter with wildlife. The animals don’t want anything to do with people for the most part.</p>

<p>One of the big pluses of hiking around here is the lack of poisonous snakes. Those do’t want anything to do with people either, but you could step on one and get bit. Even in snake territory those reports are very, very rare. People getting bit are usually doing something stupid.</p>

<p>I think it is pretty clear at this point that the stuff that replaced animal fats in the name of “good health” caused far more harm than butter and lard. The trans fats in margarine and Crisco and every processed food for 50 years have turned out to be really nasty stuff.</p>

<p>Here’s a perfect example. We all know that cream in our coffee is bad, right? Well, here’s the current ingredient list for original flavor Coffeemate non-dairy coffee creamer. The stuff that is supposed to be more healthy than high-fat cream:</p>

<p>Let’s break that down. The first ingredient, water, is OK. But, the next largest amount is sugar (corn syrup solids), and the third largest amount is trans fat (partially hydrogenated soybean oil AKA Crisco). Everything else is trace amounts of chemical stabizers, emulsifiers, flavors, and colors. In other words, this stuff, that is supposed to be healthier than cream is a chemical-laced mixture of sugar and trans fat – probably the two worst things you can eat from a health standpoint.</p>

<p>Yet, we get beat over the head to stop drinking “high fat dairy” because it’s bad for us. Huh? </p>

<p>Here’s the ingredient list for the Hood Half n’ Half that I drink in my coffee. This is the stuff that is “bad for me”…</p>

<p>So- my luck ran out and I’m injured. Hopefully, I caught this soon and will be more reasonable than I have been in the past. It’s pain deep in my right butt- so not the hamstring involvement that I had in 2010-11. This is the piriformis muscle. It started Sat-Sunday and was worse after my 5 mile run Tues am. I started up my PT exercises and, miraculously, was able to get in to my PT this morning since he had a sudden cancellation. Little did I know what was in store for me! I mentally draw a line about what I’m willing to do to keep running, and the line I drew was short of dry needling! Well, after he studied me for about 10 minutes (different balances, measurements, stretches etc) he informed me that we would do some dry needling! I about ran from the building! Basically, they stick an acupuncture needle deep into your muscle. THREE TIMES!!! It causes a dull ache and some reverberating spasms like electrical shocks. It isn’t horrible, but it is NOT comfortable. Somehow I survived. It’s sore, but that should go away. He then put me through some exercises and postures and then dug around in my quads and hip muscles with his elbow and hands. KILLED!!! He is SO good, but it is not fun. </p>

<p>I have to go back next Wednesday and might have to get more dry needling. Ugh. I’m glad I didn’t know about this in advance of today’s appointment. He said I can run what I can tolerate, so hopefully I can keep the streak going. I did 1 1/2 slow flat miles on the dreadmill this morning. I don’t mind just doing a little each day. I am not that obsessed about my year’s mileage goal this year and have no race coming up. I’m going to try to get this nipped before I’m really sidelined for months and months like the last time. He thought my range of motion was good- which is interesting since I do NO stretching.</p>

<p>I hope that it heels up fast. I would have to be really desperate to let anybody stick dry needles in me! </p>

<p>Thanks. Yeah, I wasn’t that desperate, but apparently this is the current “go to” technique for this sort of thing. I guess Perry (my PT) wasn’t about to endure a year of my whining again!</p>

<p>Oh MoWC! The cure sounds worse than the injury! I hope they work.</p>

<p>I took a walk in the heat this morning–a few miles–and went to the gym this afternoon for a cooler 3.5 run. My fit kid comes home today so I’m sure my exercising will only increase for the duration of his stay. Exercising, and the grocery bill :slight_smile: </p>

<p>I appreciate the review of Fed Up, BB. Will somebody give a shout if this makes it to Netflix or Amazon (or someplace besides a movie theater)? It’s unlikely to be a popular show here in fast and chain food land.</p>

<p>I do hike alone, but warily. I prefer to have a partner. I do worry about stepping on a venemous snake, although this could just as easily happen with somebody else along. Bears are also a minor worry. But I’d be a lot more comfortable if I knew there weren’t any creeps lurking. I keep my phone at hand with the GPS running. </p>
