Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

The McDonalds part alone - doesn’t bother me so much. Weird that the conference would choose or agree to a meal by them , but ok, whatever. McDonalds is actually one of my D 's clients at her PR form and they do actually spend a lot of time out in the community encouraging people to make BETTER McDonalds choices - because face it, much of America is going to make a fast food choice here and there. You can make a few choices that aren’t awful.

However, the extent to which that article shows that they had “bad food” being represented ?? That was a bit shocking!!!

Considering the source (I don’t necessarily view Mother Jones as unbiased journalism), I was surprised that the article was not more antagonistic towards McDonald’s. No question that McDonald’s is a reality for many folks.

Awesome day of hiking today. High 70s. Blue sky. Gorgeous!

The Youtube:

[Welch Dickey Backwards](<a href=“Welch Dickey Backwards - YouTube”>Welch Dickey Backwards - YouTube)

This is one of my favorite hikes. I do it a couple of times each year. Much of the hike is on big open rock ledges. Lots of sunshine. Lots of views!

Everyone, me included, hikes it counter clockwise – up Welch down and back up to Dickey and then back down to the parking lot. I figured I’d try it clockwise, cllimbing Dickey first. Probably a little tougher this way. The climb up Dickey is easier, but it’s quite steep going down from Welch, steep enough that you have to pay attention to not do a faceplant.

Just spectacular weather. 5.2 miles with 1768 feet of elevation gain according to Garmin.

Sabaray, good find. :)

Teri, hope your healing continues at a good pace and that the walking helps mind and body recover. After I got out of cardiac rehab, all I wanted to do was walk – I was tired of being immobile and cooped up. Just keep hydrated as the weather gets warmer.

Nice hike, idad. By stark contrast, my short trip up the hill yesterday featured thunder, lightening and blinding rain. I’d thought I might beat the storm that was rolling in, but no such luck. Just glad no trees went down while I was under them :)

Sabaray, that article pretty much reflects my poor impression of that profession after having met a dietician at the hospital with mch last year. Clearly someone’s drinking the koolaid…figuratively, and perhaps literally :)

Now, we all know I’m not mch of a food purist per se, but I don guild the Lilly…I recognize that I’m eating junk when I’m eating junk.

But what blows me away is the abject lack of integrity in any association governing a profession that allows such co-opting. Granted, it isn’t much different than the medical assn being co-opted by big pharma, which it is, but the whole thing puts me in mind of the terrifying comedy “Idiocracy” - the movie where a guy wakes up 500 years later to find society so stupid and co-opted by commercial entities that there’s a famine because they’re watering crops with the equivalent of Mountain Dew  hi ho! As Vonnegut would say ;)

iDad- looks like another good one for you! Good job, everyone. Keep it going.

idad, do you have a hiking buddy or do you hike alone?

Cardio and weights today. I’m sore some from the weights, but it’s the da_n gardening (weeding on hands & knees, plus cultivating) that’s killing me. My aching back!!! No help from H at this point because he’s so busy getting his boat prepped for the season …

idad – have you read “Following Atticus?” (Or perhaps this discussion has already happened during the time I was off this thread?) Quick fun read about a man and his dog who hike a lot in the White Mountains.

kmc:

A downed tree brought me to a screeching halt yesterday, It was a the worse possible place – the steepest little bit coming down from the Dickey Summit. A jumble of rocks that, coming up, requires using hands and feet. And, the tree blocked the one path between rocks. I had a choice of hanging off a tree and dropping about five feet from one rock to another after stepping over the tree or getting on hands and knees on top of a another rock and going under the tree, then stepping down a short step to another rock. I managed to get under it!

blankmind:

I hike solo. An interesting discussion about hiking buddies on a NH hiking forum. I was surprised that more than half prefered hiking solo. It is really hard, apparently, to find hiking partners that match your pace. The bigger problem is that organizing hikes becomes a chore. I like to pick my hiking days based on the weather report and I’ll change days as the forecast jumps around. I didn’t decide to hike yesterday until Sunday when I saw the 76 degree sunny forecast followed by a week of clouds and showers. I’d say I see more solo hikers on the trails. The exception is couples and I’m sure that carries it’s own set of challenges. :)

CBB:

I have Atticus on my Kindle and have started reading it off and on. My daughter gave me Wild for Christmas so I had to read that first. There’s another one, [The Adventures of Buffalo and Tough Cookie](http://buffaloandtoughcookie.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/) about hiking more of the kinds of trails I hike in NH. I guess it’s a genre: hiking/general interest. I find one characteristic of Kindle reading is a big tendency to jump around from book to book.

CBB, for me, gardening is definitely a great way to exercise those muscle groups that never get much action, lol. My butt is so sore as if someone repeatedly kicked it!

I forgot to write my personal review of the movie about sugar - Fed Up. Will do so when I get to my keyboard.

A continued, speedy recovery you teriwtt.

Congratulations on the marathon completion, Dad II! I sincerely doubt I’ll be included in that 0.5 % Kudos!!!

Idad, the movie Idiocracy seems prophetic, eh? Enjoy Wild. I did like reading the hiking parts of that book. I’ve been on a trail book spree of late with titles about the Appalachian and Florida Trails.

We visited DD in the Boston area over a long weekend. Lots of walking for us, including the whole Freedom Trail on an absolutely gorgeous Sunday. What I, the walker and semi-runner, didn’t realize was that we would have the opportunity to climb to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument–all 200-however-many stairs. Now THAT elevated my heart rate in a hurry. And all after H and I had hit the hotel gym in the morning for a treadmill run and weights with plenty of squats. I’m still feeling the stair-climbing on the old calves!

Can’t wait for your review BB.

Had the choice today of going home at 3pm and running in 85 degrees, sunny, hot and humid (event tonight so can’t run later) or going to the gym and the dreadmill… Today, I decided outside was “dread” - opted for a 30 minute treadmill run. :)

Oh, I read it right after Christmas. I skipped the page every time she started in about her family and her mother dying and all. Bogged down a good hiking story! :)

"Bogged down a good hiking story! " Agree!!!

3 miles today. My Mio Link will not turn on today :((

Worked out with my trainer–an hour of heavy weights. Included chest press, leg press, kettle bell swings and halos, triceps, walking lunges with a medicine ball, battle ropes, squats, and planks–one with my feet on the bosu.

Nice hike Idad! Do you see woman hiking alone? I’m always a little leery about going out in my own. Don’t quite feel safe hiking all alone. Don’t know why.

BB, eager to hear the movie review.

I think iDad’s been writing for the WSJ or under the name Nina Teicholz. His newest book is just out: The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet. Interesting synopsis here: <a href=“The Questionable Link Between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease - WSJ”>http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303678404579533760760481486</a></p>

Bromfield, when I was in DC I was a little anxious about running alone and I was in a very safe and shall we say, well protected area. I can’t imagine hiking alone. I had hoped to get H a new grill for father’s day - today I learned that our home needs a new heating/cooling system. Wonder if there are any you can also use as a barbeque.

I wonder about hiking also bromfield. I get so many comments because I go to the local bike path and mountain bike path to exercise. Even though I always see people around, my neighbors think it’s unsafe. I can’t decide if they really think it’s unsafe or if it is an excuse not to. Most just exercise inside on their treadmills or walk our neighborhood. I would go bonkers.

I’d really like to hike a local path but it’s pretty remote and I don’t feel that safe. Kinda silly since I run into local Boy Scout troops on this hiking path. But it is unusual to see singles out there.

Ran 3 miles yesterday but rest day today. A front came through and I have a monster headache. Not fun at all.
