Along with a good dose of luck!

Especially with these back and nerve impingement injuries. Those are accumlated years of wear and tear that could be triggered by something as benign as reaching over to pick up a knitting needle.

So true… DW ruptured a disc putting on a pair of pants, and reinjured it opening a door.

So… I just moved into the smart phone era - a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S5. Yay, me!

Does anyone have any app recommendations?

It came with “S Health”, which has a pedometer app, and the phone has a built-in gizmo to measure your pulse, which is kind of cool.

I downloaded “Track My Walk” which seems to do an ok job measuring how far I walk. Is there a better one?

There’s a gazillion fitness apps… :-?

4 miles with lots of hills today. I signed up for a 5k for Memorial Day instead of the half. I love running a half, I just don’t like training for it! I don’t know what to expect for time, because I feel like doing all the long miles has made me slower, or maybe that’s just me getting older…

MoWC, I hope the treatments work for you so you can get back to running. I need to be better about my glute & core exercises.

Don’t know if others saw this, but interesting article:

<a href=“Opinion | Always Hungry? Here’s Why - The New York Times”>http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/18/opinion/sunday/always-hungry-heres-why.html

It kind of reiterates what a lot of people have been saying, to rethink the whole mantra of low fat, eat a lot of grains and so forth, plus of course, that one of the big issues is processed food full of fillers and such. What is interesting is that if this is right, fat cells glom onto simple carbs to build more fat, and if so, then what you eat is very, very important and the old calories in<calories out, lose weight and fat, may not be so true. It also explains why someone who has low body fat can eat simple carbs and not put on fat the way someone who has more body fat does.

MOfWC, that’s hilarious. Thanks for sharing!

CNBC ran an interesting interview with the CEO of some company that makes veggie “meats”. The host kept asking him why the “meats” were not designed to be fat-free (as opposed to simply eating veggies). I liked the guys straight answer that he was convinced that good fats were good for you in reasonable moderation and that without any fat the stuff would taste awful (he stopped short of saying that they would have had to add sugar to make it taste better).

BTW, beef prices have been going through the roof lately. Not good for my diet.

Well, the trip to the gym wasn’t particularly successful. I did 10 minutes on the Precor version of the ARC trainer (Cybex’s version) and it was hurting so I stopped. 2 minutes on the LifeFitness elliptical and it was hurting so I stopped. Not hurting like running would, but it wasn’t OK. 10 minutes on the LifeFitness stationary bike and it wasn’t hurting but I had short running shorts on and I decided I’m going to need my bike shorts to do anything significant on that big, wide seat. I may try it again. So- I appear to be down to swimming and maybe hot yoga.

I got a new pair of Altra’s version of Hokas in the mail today (huge discount from a previous mess-up Altra made on an order for me) and they are so comfortable and pretty. I have them on, but can’t run a step. They are called Paradigm.

It’s been so blasted hot today–94 or 95 degrees–that I kept the outdoor walking to a minimum. Maybe a mile and a half this morning. At the gym with the AC blowing down my back I did another 2 miles of walking and jogging. I had a sushi dinner with fit kid who found out he has a rare problem with a front tooth necessitating a trip to the endodontist on Tuesday. On the bright side, S1 is coming for a weekend visit tomorrow.

Here’s a link to views from a seven mile hike through typical central Florida piney woods. Probably the hardest part is trudging through places with lots of loose sand which in addition to making the walking more demanding also sifts through your shoes and socks–kind of abrasive and makes for a rough looking pedicure! Sun and heat always factor in. Water is a must. Sunscreen, hat, and bug sprays are usually advised. But it’s beautiful!

Awesome workout in the basement. One of those where everything feels good and strong. Same workout I’ve been doing for many weeks now, so you’d think I’d be getting better at it.

Sumo squat pallof press
Plank position rows
Stability ball mountain climbers

Plyo box jumps
Med ball slams

Single leg deadlift (much improved)
TRX pushups (much improved)
DB front squat (solid)
3-pt row (best I’ve done with 60 lb db)

I hear ya. Every time I think about grilling a burger, I realize I can grill a thick center cut pork chop for half the price of burger meat. I think more people should listen to experts and stop eating red meat (so prices come down for me!). I did get three dinners out of a grilled flank steak this week and I’m thinking a massive rib eye from the local butcher shop this weekend if we get a dry day.

The American Heart Association is going to come take me away. Thick sliced bacon and a 3-egg cheddar cheese omelet for lunch. Dinner salad with olive oil and double blue cheese dressing with sliced salami (poor man’s proscuitto). I think I probably broke the saturated fat meter.

Oohhh… The Paradigm has arrived? Cool. I’m tempted to give them a try. Hoka is supposed to come out with their zero drop shoe in the nearest future.

I’ve been wearing the Paradigm around all evening and I think I love it. I have sole wear issues with both Hokas and Altras- but no worse than anything else. Shoe Goo is my friend. My Paradigms are LSU colors- purple and yellow- very pretty.
I’ve made it as far as finding my yoga mat and my yoga water bottle, so there’s that.

Better you than me, MOWC. If I did yoga, I probably wouldn’t be able to move for a month!

Good chuckle out of that YouTube MOWC!

MOfWC, I think you need a shopotherapy trip to Lulu to refresh your yoga wardrobe.
I’m scooping up some hot yoga stuff there this weekend for the big kiddo’s birthday gift. She says she needs hot yoga clothes and running shorts.

Purple and yellow? That would be U Dub colors, too. Gotta find those shoes!

Awesome video, PlantMom. I recognized the song from the very first cicada chirp. One of my favorite obscure songs from an obscure Cowboy Junkies album. All the songs are inspired by the weeks Michael Timmons and his wife spent in Beijing arranging the adoption of their child. That particular song, oddly enough, is about the Cultural Revolution.

Yay! Finally - a short run. Got my little fix. Mr B had a good laugh out of MOfWC’s YouTube video.
