I saw my ortho surgeon today for my one yr checkup. Highly recommended as us Virginia Mason if anyone is looking.
He was pleased to see my xrays look great and Ive been walking 2-3 miles a day on days I dont go swimming.
I dont have to return for 4 yrs. Heres hoping it wont be for the other side!

Fantastic! Sounds like it’s time for a new-knee celebration party for emeraldkity! :)

3.1 miles. My calf muscle hurts :(. Freaking out, my race is Saturday and I have been injury free until now. I should be calm, people run races all the time. My H is taking the brunt.

EK, fingers crossed for you!

Deb, it sounds like you need to take some vitamin I or massage some Aspercreme into the muscle, and then Rest and icing in addition to meds. I know how you feel - the closer it gets to my races, the more i tend to freak out about pains and aches in my body. The only difference is that I keep this whining to myself.

1000 yards swimming. I don’t think indoor swimming is going to be the answer here.

Basement for me. Solid punch the clock workout. KB swings were good. And, I did five good chin ups in the third set – a perk of a little better strength to weight ratio!

I’m in hot water with the Heart Association. I realized that the salad I had for lunch (with olive oil and blue cheese dressing) put me at the daily saturated fat limit by itself. A salad! I’m guessing that the steak fajitas (hold the tortilla) I’m having for dinner probably puts me a wee bit over… :)

Well idad, your experience sounds similar to DH’s. He had two flight crews on two different flights max out between the thunderstorms. In the process he lost his seat on this morning’s 6 AM flight, but managed to get one back by being very nice to the people working the gate area! He had no dinner, and a sack of candy from the trade show he’d been at. I didn’t ask how much he ate
His “bed” was three adjacent seats in the gate area. I know he didn’t get much sleep, but at least he’s home and even able to work half a day. Very funny about the dog!!!

Good for you, emerald!

Deb, I hope you can work out the muscle aches before the race.

I walked this morning and evening, and ran 3.25 miles on the treadmill. Feeling guilty about the chocolate bar I scarfed down out of H’s conference candy bag :0

Yesterday morning I did the run/walk thing 2 times around Fresh Pond here in Cambridge. This is the first time I’ve been off the treadmill since my broken foot bones. My pace was pretty slow, and I was extra careful about my footing, but it was a gorgeous morning and nice to be outside. I did notice a few twinges in my foot last night, though, so I guess I’m not quite 100% yet. (The ortho said the 5th metatarsal can take an extra long time to heal - 4-6 months; I’m at 4.)

CBB- sometimes there is referred pain with a fracture well after it heals. I know I’ve had that before and I was assured that it was normal.

Well- I called that one! The ortho (actually a PA) DID give me a cortisone shot in the butt! It didn’t hurt, miraculously. He really recommended it for the inflammation and then I start the oral steroids tomorrow am (6 days). Not looking forward to that- hunger, irritability, difficulty sleeping. Just what I need!

To top it off, I woke up with one of those calf cramps. I sprung from the bed in pain. Haven’t had that in ages. It still hurts. Just shoot me now! (Actually, my daughter is shocked that I’m handling all this as well as I am and not being a total Beeutch. I think being older helps.) I’m warily eyeing my bicycle hanging from the high reaches of the garage. I have a high-end (nothing like H’s or WildChild’s stable) road bike that H built for me and I got measured specially for the frame fit. There are just so many problems with me and biking, though.

MOWC, maybe the biking/swimming/whatever will help you get some nervous energy out. :)

Deb, you’ve got a couple days till the race - follow BB’s advice and no need to run before the race this weekend. You’ll feel fresh and rested for race day!

I’m usually a late day runner but decided to get up early this morning and was out on the pavement by 6:15 for a quick 2.5 before work. Didn’t love getting up earlier, but love that it’s done and my afternoon/evening frees up after work!

This week has not been a good one in terms of exercising and eating. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

MOfWC, with so much going on, you are holding up very well! Just come and rant here when you feel the urge to chew someone’s head off. We understand!
Be careful with biking. In my experience, bikes and painful butts do not mix well. Although YMMV.

I was running on the trail the other day and saw a lady zipping by on one of those elliptical bikes. I remember researching them in the past, so maybe I should bring the topic up with Mr B - my birthday is just around the corner.

The Elliptigo! They sponsor Meb K! I would love one, but you need a lot of flat, I would think.

Yes, that’s the one! They had a booth at the Expo in Boston. The Beer Trail is gently sloping towards the Sound, so it is 25 pretty much flat miles. Perfect. I need to get the campaign going. If I give Mr B a choice, Eliptigo or a Chanel bag, Im certain I would get one (and it is easy to guess which one
).

Basement. Short high intensity 20 minute kettlebell circuit. An ol’ favorite that I haven’t done that much recently. Six reps of each with one are, six reps of each with the other arm:

KB deadlift
KB snatch
KB front squat
KB push press

2 minutes between rounds for a total of four rounds. Good little short and sweet workout combining a little cardio/endurance with some strength exercise. 35 lb KB is all I can handle with this workout and the push presses at the end on each side are tough.

Salmon sauteed and then finished with a lemon scallion white balsamic blender sauce. Side of broccoli in butter and white wine sauce. Yum. American Heart Association: bite me!

MOWC- I’m not an expert, but I caution you about kicking in the pool. I suffered my biggest injury ever doing a Masters work-out kick board set. Full on lower right back and butt pain and spasms requiring two months of physical therapy and almost a one year recovery. I know it must be incredibly hard for you to sit still while your injury heals, but time will heal you and you will return to your usual athletic self!

MOWC - I recall that you recently got a gizmo that is tracking your steps, and in addition to all the running you do, you were adding 10,000 steps a day in walking.

So I’m wondering if maybe this injury is triggered by overuse, or perhaps that much walking in work shoes led to the problem.

Just a thought.

^^I thought about that as well. Walking seems so - well, “easy”, that we don’t always think about it as extra mileage on our feet - especially when paired with lots of other pavement time.

Yes, I have the Vivofit and I, too, wondered about the walking in work flats, etc., although, frankly, 10000 steps is not all that much. This thing (piriformis) can be caused by almost anything- sitting is a big culprit.

I’m done a lot of swimming in the past (master’s) and never had a problem with kicking. The other night I did some kicking and it felt pretty good on this injury. I may try hot yoga tomorrow, but I’m not thrilled with that idea because 1. I have to pay and 2. I don’t really have a schedule that will let me go as often as I believe you need to for it to be beneficial and for me to tolerate it

I did my exercises this am and then tried to walk around the block- lots of pain. Then I got back and it sort of released and felt fine. It’s an odd injury. Started the oral steroid pack, so I should be a raving maniac shortly. it requires a lot of higher education just to figure out when to take all of the pills!

Interesting how these corticosteroid pills affect different people. I was really hesitant to take them since I read horror stories, but I had zero.

To think about it, it takes so little to wreck something in our bodies that would take ages to heal!

I have taken prednisone in the past for injuries (without much luck) and I thought the main side effect for me was that I had a lot of trouble sleeping. The timing isn’t bad on this, since I don’t have work Sat, Sun or Mon and maybe I’ll be adjusted by Tuesday.

The big key to injury prevention (besides not running at all) is to keep strong core and glutes. I am very guilty of not doing the exercises I should do- until I get hurt.
