Spent the weekend at a wedding on the Eastern Shore (MD)–beautiful area. I got in a walk on Friday and did yoga with a group of young women at the hotel on Saturday morning. They were also wedding guests and one was a yoga teacher who was leading the group–she took us outside on the lawn (that gave me pause, since I was about 30 years older than anyone else, but I went ahead and just did it). Had planned to go to the hotel gym on Sunday but slept in–too much partying at the wedding. Yoga (hips and hamstrings) tonight.

Hope you enjoy Acadia Idad. I think you should definitely reward yourself with popovers at The Jordan Pond restaurant  I’m assuming it’s still around?

Congrats to WC’s girlfriend–great accomplishment. Enjoy the Vineyard, Snowflake! Beautiful spot for walking and running and biking.

Funny you should mention The Jordan Pond Restaurant, Bromfield – here’s a link to the latest news:
http://www.thejordanpondhouse.com

4.02 mile run/walk this morning. At least today I didn’t feel like I was ready to keel over before the walk intervals buzzed on my timer – so that’s something.

Sounds like a great weekend, Bromfield. That’s a lovely area - Sabadog’s birthplace. Fun fact of the day!

Washington Post has a little write-up today on the super-cushioned shoes - Hokas figure prominently.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2014/06/09/times-up-barefoot-runners-make-way-for-fat-soled-running-shoes/?hpid=z6

Happy B-Day Sabadog!!! Is there a special treat for you after your healthy walk!!!?? :o3

Sabadog sends his thanks for the good wishes, abasket, but his birthday isn’t until December. He was born in the neck of the woods Bromfield was visiting. But he regularly gets a special treat - homemade frosty paws - yogurt, banana, honey - mashed up and frozen. We’re all eating healthy at the Sabaray house!

Silly me - I read “birthdate”, not “birthplace” - give him a treat anyway!!! HAHA We do that blend too except peanut butter instead of honey!

Thanks for the article link, sabaray. That seems to be the prevailing opinion- more cushioning helps. I certainly find that it does.

I’m thinking I’d like a pair with a bit more cushioning. I know we’ve talked about Hokas quite a bit here, but what model would you recommend for a novice runner who needs some stability? I was also looking at some of the Brooks shoes. Any recommendations in that line?

The Brooks Transcend is a good shoe. It’s not nearly as high or cushioned as the Hokas, but it has a LOT of cushioning compared to many shoes. The brand new Nimbus looks very cushioned, too.

I think I meant the Glycerin 12- not Nimbus.

I think the Nimbus is Asics and I’ve never had good luck with those. H loves them as he has a very high arch and they seem to work for him.

I have the Glycerin 11 and they are very comfortable for long distances. I need to start looking for a replacement so I thought I’d check out the 12’s and see if I like them. I just found out that my company gives a $300 per year reimbursement for fitness related items. I can use it for new shoes! It also can be used for race fees!

Wow, that’s amazing Blankmind - my husband can get some of our fitness center fees reimbursed if he uses it a certain # of times - great that they are willing to let you pick the menu of how to spend your fitness $$!

That’s great, blankmind! I’m envious. I think I will be trying the Glycerins. If I’ve only learned one thing in the past year it’s that the right shoes and the right socks make a huge difference.

blankmind, that is pretty cool. $300 would keep me in running shoes for a year if I don’t chase after newly released fancy stuff. Enjoy your awesome benefit.

My cold is finally at the point where I can attempt some running. I’m very interested to finally try my new Torins. They have a really wide toebox and feel good on the feet when I walk around the house in them.

Let me know what you think of the Torins. I can’t believe I got hurt before I even got to run in my purple and yellow Paradigms. I just got a notice today that Hoka is releasing a lighter and cheaper shoe called.Clifton which will ship from thetrishop.com in mid-July. It is $130 which makes it a better price point than some of the other shoes (and there are usually discount codes or VIP memberships). My sister just got Hoka Evo Stinson just for walking and loves them.

My upper body is getting really strong from the crutches.

How many days/weeks into recovery now MOWC??? Is there a target date for a revisit with the doc to reevaluate putting weight on your feet/legs???

MOfWC, will do! I’m very antsy to take them outside. :)

Thursday will be 2 weeks on the crutches and I can bear a lot of weight now on the leg without any pain. I am doing very short walks( like in my closet or the bathroom) without the crutches with no pain. I started that this weekend on the VA trip. I use the crutches for the great majority of my walking, but can touch down fully with the right foot now with no pain at all.
I am going to another doctor tomorrow- my regular ortho surgeon who knows my history. I just want his opinion on why, how to recover, what I should and should not do, etc. I suspect he will let me aquajog and swim, but we’ll see tomorrow. I don’t want to screw up the healing, so I will listen! I also think he’ll probably let me come off the crutches sooner than 4 weeks. Many with this injury never even go on crutches, but I don’t know how they can do that since I couldn’t even walk!

Glad to hear of the improvements, MoWC!

Two days of a 1.5 mile warm-up jog on the treadmill, followed by core exercises and weights.
