Decided to use the treadmill in the exercise room. Had to do some mental math to calculate my settings since the only treadmill that was not taken was programmed in kilometers -lol. There was no obvious and not so obvious way to change the setting, so I just trained like a Canadian.
Ran 5.6 km - lol, then did some weights (no bench squatter today, thank goodness). Again stuffed ourselves with “free” breakfast and then snorkeled for about an hour. Mr B took some really cool pictures of sea turtles, and I found a stick on the bottom of the lagoon and then later came across a moray eel to poke out of its hole with the newly found stick! Awesome beginning of the day.

MOWC - yes I’m headed to nationals next year in Minneapolis. I might go to a couple other state games and qualify in the 1500/triathlon/5k. Probably should have run the 1500 yesterday but the heat was murder. Not to state the obvious but the worst part of the race—the starting line—the best part of the race—the finish line.

Sounds really wonderful, Bunsen! My triceps are pretty sore from the two days of swimming. They were sore before this morning’s swim! Tomorrow I think I’ll try the exercise bike at the gym after work and see how it feels and also do some weights.

I walked the dog- I figured that didn’t count as “fitness walking”, which I’m not allowed to do. We only went about 3/4 of a mile- and not fast. It felt SO good to get around the neighborhood after a month off! He and I had to have a discussion at one point when he wanted to go a longer way. It would be too much for me- and it was pretty warm for him, too.

Good to hear you are making some progress on the exercise front, MOfWC! Yay to swimming. I think I’m getting sore from all of the kicking I had to do to chase after the more interesting fishes. An underwater camera is a good motivator to move more. :)

I used a treadmill that used kilometers this year, and boy, did it throw me! At some point I realized I was going so slow, wondered if the treadmill was broken – and that’s when it dawned on me that the units would be different.

I rode my bike around the neighborhood for about an hour and a half today – ended up doing more than 16 miles.

Yes, when I set it up to 7 mph, the belt was barely moving, and I had the same thought - broken treadmill, until I saw the tiny “km/h” letters :)

All treadmills throw me. Miles? Kilometers? It’s all the same to me! :)

Yay to MOWC for continuing to rehab. Yah to BB. Swimming with the fishies for an hour sounds like good, fun exercise!

No exercise for me today. I’m trying to get all my ducks in a row for my first backpacking overnight. Thought I had the backpack ready to go (35 pounds) when I remembered that I didn’t have the sleeping bag or Thermarest pad on the scale!

This is my test-run. Most of the places I want to do two day hikes involve some climbing. But, I figured I better do a “proof of concept” outing on easier terrain. So this is 5.5 miles of flat easy hiking (probably close to 2 mph) to a primitive campsite area on a mountain pond. Then, backtrack 5.5 miles of flat easy hiking to the car.

Worst thing? No half an half for my coffee!

Just checking in to report in on Orangetheory.

Overall, I liked it. You alternate between rowing on a water rower (very smooth), treadmill (you could walk, jog or run - if walking, inclines used), and various weight exercises - some using dumb bells, some w BOSU, some with a TRX-like strap, and some using own body weight. You had a heart rate monitor and the goal was to keep yourself in the orange zone for x minutes. The trainer was friendly, encouraging and I didn’t have my usual panic attack of “who am I kidding, I can’t do anything athletic.” Yes, the orange is gimmicky but I need gimmicks. It felt like a nicer, gentler CrossFit - With the high intensity interval training.

Idad would have approved of all the weight exercises - they were pretty boilerplate.

The only problem is that this location is 30 min away and I can’t commit to that. There’s one opening in my town but not til 2015.

Funny - so I was reading an article on the wall about the opening of the studio, and saw the name of my husband’s cousin’s son, whom we haven’t seen in probably 10 years. Turns out he is the regional VP of training for Orangetheory for the Midwest, but is based out of a different studio from the one I was at.

Anyway, I did that plus hot yoga which was super hot given our weather here, so I’m going to bed!

@AnnieBeats when I was pregnant. I didn’t take anything but prescribed vitamins. I just don’t think there’s enough research out there about what is good or bad for a fetus. All I can say (and I think good genes helped) is that I have had kids who are incredibly healthy…

Pizzagirl I agree with everyone else 3 hours sounds like too much!

I liked the Bromberg, but agree it doesn’t sound like the only album of his I own - How Late’ll Ya Play 'Til? - which dates back geez 1976! Can that be?!

Congratulations Ohio! Sabaray, your numbers–especially that HDL–are wonderful. I don’t think I’ve ever had my Vitamin D level tested. Is this something new to ask for? Glad you’re moving about with the walking and swimming MoWC. BB, I don’t know where you are, but it sounds like a bit of paradise!

I took a trip across the state yesterday to view some Frank Lloyd Wright architecture at Florida Southern. What a beautiful campus, although maintenance of this legacy must be problematic. We visited the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Pete as well. Lots of brain exercises, but too much sitting in the car! D and I went to the gym today. I ran 3.5 miles and lifted weights (upper body). Then we splurged on some beautiful rib eye steaks for dinner (H is traveling, beef on sale) which I pan seared/oven roasted in cast iron and topped with a bit of a buttery pan sauce. We added a salad for greens. Tasty!

Today’s exercise - 1/2 hour of gym weights, 1/2 hour elliptical, one wheelbarrow of compost from the pile to the front yard.

Anyone watching soccer? We were marveling at how strenuous the games are, as opposed to football or (haha!) baseball. 90 minutes of almost continuous running and creative kicking. The Greece/Costa Rica game went overtime, so there was another 30 min. of the same, then penalty kicks to break the tie. It’s a wonder the guys could lift their legs to kick! (Unlike football, there is no special guy to come in & take kicks–five different guys on each team did it.)

It’s funny. The strength coach forum (Mike Boyle’s site with a bunch of strength and conditioning coaches) are talking about how pro soccer players refuse to train properly. All cardio, no strength training. The US coach brought Mark Verstaggen (Athletes Performance/EXOS) over to Europe when he was coaching in Germany for contemporary athletic training – core, mobility, strength, etc. Pretty sure the US team trains in similar fashion, although there really isn’t any time for training between the time the team assembles and the start of play.

I loved watching the Greece/Costa Rica game. Those guys looked so tired, and I felt the stress of each team member on both teams as they stepped up to do their tie-breaking penalty kicks.

Today is a rest day for me. On these days I take my 10-year-old dog for a walk on whatever distance and let him stop and smell anything he wants. It takes the same amount of time as a faster walk, but we probably don’t end up walking more than a half mile total. When he’s done inspecting the neighborhood, he tugs back toward home and we return.

Orangetheory sounds enjoyable, Pizzagirl. It actually sounds fun.

Rest day yesterday but took our 9 month old pup out for some individual lead training. That’s a lot of upper body work for me! She was being a real pest to our older Lab and he was like - “How is this fair? She’s the one being naughty and getting rewarded with individual attention!” 3.2 miles this morning and walked the dogs for a cool down. Supposed to be in the nineties and humid this week.

I found the secret racing formula. Getting pregnant might be a little difficult though Dedication! http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5537156

Injury recovery question:

Last Sunday I did my weight-lifting routine, felt fine. Woke up Monday with a twinge in my mid-back. I took Advil, iced it, pain went away. Took a walk that afternoon. Tuesday, same thing.

Wednesday, felt better, but then when I got into my car the twinge went from an ouch to an OUCH. The next day I decided to take it easy, but the pain got worse and worse. That night, Thursday, I could hardly sleep, the pain was so bad – until I took more Aleve and some melatonin.

Last time I had a back injury I found walking to be the most therapeutic thing to do. So Friday, I went off on a 3-hour stroll. I felt sore, but nothing compared to the night before. The pain gradually faded away. (Amazing that a 3 hour walk was better for this injury than doing nothing.) I felt fine on Saturday and went for a swim. Yesterday was a bike ride, and today I went running. Pain is gone.

So here’s the question – when is it safe to life weights? I’m afraid if I do that too soon, I’ll redamage whatever I had done initially. I’m feeling OK, but I do want sufficient healing to happen before I stress those muscles. Thoughts?

I guess I would start with VERY light weights and do the same motions you would do with your normal load and see how it feels and if it tweaks it or not.

I would give it at least a week without any pain, and then would try to gradually add back weight-bearing exercises, but would watch for any signs of the pain - if it comes back, I would stop and re-evaluate the situation. Hope it is nothing serious - fingers crossed!
