Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Yoga class today–basic flow. Got a ride to the studio and then walked home (3.3 miles).

Did I mention that I downloaded Fed Up from Amazon Instant Video and watched it huddled under my sleeping bag last week. I was dozing off a bit, so I’ll probably have to watch it again for a full review.

Overall, it was all pretty much old news to me, but for a mainstream audience, it’s probably a real eye-opener to see blame put on government and food company partnership in selling a bill of goods of fake healthy claims to the American public. Of, course, the solution offered is MORE government intervention, which seems a bit odd to me given that government public policy makers have screwed up everything they’ve touched in the nutrition field for 40 years. Before the food pyramid, everyone knew that starches and carbs and sugars were fattening. It was insane for the government to tell people to eat more fattening stuff like bread and pasta and cereal. I don’t have much confidence that the government will suddenly get it right if only they would get MORE involved.

Anyway, the movie makes sugar and processed food the villains in the story and suggests eating more real food, which seems like pretty reasonable advice.

I wonder if any networks will touch this documentary? I doubt it.

I’m eating real food tonight. I hate to let fresh tarragon go to waste, so I popped for a couple more lobsters and am going for a second round of Bobby Flays Lobster/Avocado salad before Monday Night football. Lobsters are steamed and sitting in an ice bath. I guess I better go cook and chow down.

“PG, it’s in the record books - and each race is not likely to be a record-breaker! Good job following through - a walk/run strategy is a great alternative - even for some runners with more experience - for exercise. Breaks up the session and when you finish is still very, very satisfying!”

Ha - I kind of saved up some of my energy for the last 1/8 mile and my H was serving as the race doctor so I wanted him to see my “strong finish.” I ran my little guts out - and he was turned away, attending to a little girl who had fallen and scraped her knee :-). Can’t win!

As I told MOWC, I also pinned my race tag to my shirt before putting it on – inadvertently pinned it through both sides – went to pull it over my head, couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t pulling … riiiiip!!

Interesteddad, saw the yellow warning sign on exposure on your video and when we were hiking there too, so it made me chuckle.
We left the parking lot at 75 degrees and experienced a 40 degree drop and sleet coming in 40 mph sideways on top. White Mtns are awesome.
Plantmom the trails end up closed near us when there is flooding because folks can’t see the trails and end up getting confused/lost. Pretty fun though to trek along on paths with fish trying to find their streams.

Idad, I’m sure it felt like preaching to the choir for you.

More steep hill speedwalking for me - all week long! I think I’m building some pretty good endurance even without running. :)

Yikes! It’s going to be 95 degrees today in Dallas, I think. Everybody keeps talking about the “cold front” which is coming in a couple of days which will bring “cool temperatures and high of 85.” Fall can’t get here soon enough for me.

Did 17.3 miles on the bike today! Felt so much better after a full night’s sleep, no alcohol, and no junk.

Will take the next two days off for recovery.

One-hour workout with trainer–lots of abs and core and balance work with free weights. This trainer is obsessed with balance and she works balance exercises into every workout. I think the balance work has helped me with some of the yoga poses. Did 30 minutes on the Cybex after the workout.

^^^^What is a Cybex? Is that a stupid question? :">

Yeah. It’s something about being the first barrier to the prevailing NW wind and weather. The upslopes generate clouds. I’m just a wimp I just don’t go to those summits when they are buried in the clouds. Although even on a gorgeous, blue sky day, the clouds can settle around the summits, I almost had one drop on my head while up on Eisenhower, but it stayed overhead (but low enough to bury Mt. Washington, just 1000 feet higher). And blew away ten minutes later.

You can theoretically find your way in the clouds by hiking from one cairn to the next, but I’ll leave that to the adventurers!

The irony was that the “worst weather in America” sign had succombed to the weather and way lying on it’s side in the moss next to the trail.

The highest wind recorded at the weather station on top of Mt. Washington was 231 mph. They record hurricane force winds a whopping 110 days a year. The warmest daily high temp every recorded was 72 degrees. The coldest daily HIGH temp ever was minus 28 degrees F.

Here’s a tourist youtube somebody shot in June:

nrdbs- Nothing is a stupid question here. I assume she means the Cybex machine that is like an elliptical but with more range of motion. Cybex also makes bikes, though, and other equipment. Cybex is a brand like Landis or LifeFitness.

4 miles after work yesterday- 83 degrees. I went over to the path so I had mainly shade and it wasn’t too bad. Did a little this morning (2 miles) and it was 62 degrees.

Our gym has the Cybex arc trainers - I try to use those on cross-training days.

Feeling very tired today. Today is a run day - and I was really tempted to not run this morning, but I was awake and did a little over six. Had some company - the university’s ROTC folks doing some training.

Nrd: Cybex=Cybex arc trainer, Here’s a photo:

I like the arc trainer for variety. :)

First gloomy day in weeks it seems! Knew I had and would appreciate an hour break at work during the day today so brought workout wear and enjoyed 3 miles combo of track/treadmill and some rowing time.

Working out at the work place fitness center made me think - MOWC did your new workplace building open it’s fitness facility yet??? Wondering how the new space is working out.

We did! We are all in the building now (actually 2 connected buildings) and the workout center is open and really nice. I have changed in there a couple of times to go run after work, but haven’t done anything inside yet. Our parking lot and campus backs onto a short running path, but it connects to a nice residential neighborhood with almost no traffic. I plan to run a couple of miles from work tonight, but it’s pretty hot and not much shade. It will be a good option as the weather cools off and I can slip out at noon sometimes. The locker rooms are nice. The equipment is adequate and will meet our needs. There are about 4 treadmills, 4 bikes, a few ellipticals, free weights, a few machines and a room of not-the-latest spin bikes which can also be a yoga room.

We have a lot of green space and outdoor areas for sitting, meeting and eating lunch. My office has a wall of windows and overlooks the nice courtyard and I’m also near another bank of windows which looks out past the parking lot to the trail and the hills beyond. It’s pretty darn nice. We are not a lavish company (Fortune 500 but in a very down to earth segment of the retail world) so the building is not over the top, but fits our culture and is good for us.

Sounds like a great place to visual spend your daytime hours! The running path, though short is a bonus. Hope that people take advantage of it even just for some mental breaks/walking!

The hr monitor was spiking all over the place my first mile. 150 hr walking? I don’t think so! A change of 20-30 beats in a 5 second span. Stopped in a laundromat to drench it with water and seemed to get it under control. 11:30 -12:40 pace at 127-131 bpm. Over 8 miles.

The new garmin strap has to be wetted down or he (she?) gets temperamental with me .Maybe I need to be a little nicer to it. It didn’t like the f bombs I was hurling at it the first mile.

In cooler, dryer weather, you definitely have to moisten the electrodes a little bit – on all of these straps. You can either wet the two oval black electrode patches or put a little dab of electrode gel on them:

http://www.amazon.com/Spectra-Electrode-Parker-Labs-250GM/dp/B0002CA8RQ</a></p>

Not a problem in hot summer weather because sweating takes care of it. But, walking in cooler weather, it could be LONG time before you sweat enough.

That’s a bit of different issue than the cold weather static spikes, which are probably caused by static spikes from tech shirts flapping against the strap. Wetting the fabric patches on the Garmin strap is supposed to be the best way to combat that.

Try hiking with cold dry temps in the teens. Drives these heart rate monitors NUTS.

I don’t know, Ohio, I can get to a HR of 150 walking…up a hill ;)

Nothing exciting to report here…still having neck/shoulder problems…still getting up the hill and managing it. I’m still hopeful it will straighten itself out without intervention…

In other news, some people never relly believed me when I first moved here and tried to tell them that the same brands of food taste different in other countries (more sugar here, even in things like tomato paste unless you specifically read ingredients to gpfigure out which ones are pure…)

So I found this article from the food babe both interesting…and of course, infuriating. Have a look:
<a href=“McDonald's serves WHAT in London?! The Outrageous Double-Standard in Fast Food.”>http://foodbabe.com/2014/09/30/mcdonalds-serves-what-in-london-the-outrageous-double-standard-in-fast-food/</a></p>

Be very wary with foodbabe. She’s not exactly up on her science. She’s sort of like the anti-vax crowd of the food world - throw in a lot of scary technical terms and rely on the scientific illiteracy of followers.

5 pound party for me. Finally getting back down after the broken bones, horrible eating, etc. Still have a couple to go to be where I want to be and heading into Kona and winter isn’t good… I seem to do better with bigger lunches and small dinners. If I run after work, I’m really not very hungry. 60 degrees and a beautiful sunrise this morning for my short run. 2.3 done.
