Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

kcmom13, if you are going to try a weight vest, be very cautious and mindful of postural and center of gravity issues they can cause. This is particularly of concern in multi-plane mobility based exercising where body alignment can be critical to avoiding injuries. Weight vests that carry the weight high raise your center of gravity and can unnaturally alter your line of gravity over your base of support creating balance issues that require compensations that will impact on maintaining good running form. Weight vests that carry the weight low can create excessive lumbar and hip stresses as well as postural issues such as excessive lordosis. You might find that simply increasing your pace or doing more or increased intensity intervals will more than offset the reduction in intensity resulting from your weight loss accomplishments :).

I’m taking a day off from running! I’m deliberately trying not to get into a streak, especially with some difficult travel coming up. I hit about a 31 day streak a week or so ago and then stopped. I have been playing a little bit with the Jungle Gym. I’m starting slowly, since the ribs are just finishing up healing. I like it, though.

Flu shots at work yesterday and it hurt! I hate needles, but I was told that since I have tattoos I waive the right to complain about needles. My arm is sore.

Haha - love that comment about the needle/tattoos. Also love and APPRECIATE that you can say “I’m taking a day off from running” - with an “!!!” at the end!

Have a healthy weekend to help you get ready for that tiresome travel!

I’m not a fan of the flu shot either. Always seem to be sore for several days. Sounds like you’re happy with your workouts, MOWC!

30 minute core class this morning - super intense circuit of all core exercises. I really like it. Good part is a fair number of the women I run with are also in the class, so no one wants to wimp out in front of the others! So now I’m done until tomorrow when I have 13 easy miles ahead of me.

iDad, I shared that Mt. Washington video with H. He advised that running a marathon was one thing but this was strictly off limits. I’ve added that video to my “fantasy reel” of highlights that I use to motivate myself. It’s right up there with the time I won the Boston Marathon.

Thanks, abasket. My running is really not going well, but that’s the way it is. I lost about 45 seconds a mile this summer, and I wasn’t fast to begin with! Much of it is the time I lost from the injury, but I think some of it is the Forteo injections, which can cause muscle weakness. I’m accepting about it, and I’m just going to be very slow for awhile. I mean VERY slow… I hate that I can’t train with my daughter anymore, since she needs to go faster to get ready for her goal marathon on the 19th in Toronto. I also am not getting younger, and there is absolutely no disputing that your pace and VO2 Max fall off each year…

Sabaray- good workout!

Sabaray you crack me up. I remember that BM win for you - a shining moment for this thread!!!

It’s a rainy day here - workout bag by my side - will hit the gym before I leave work today.

I watched that Mt Washington video as well. Crazy! It would be my luck to be one of the ones videoed not at a prime strong moment DURING the race, but I’d be the one at the finish line ready to collapse and looking like heck and desperation as someone throws a blanket over me!!!

I’ve been reading but not posting much right now.

Today I needed to get out and run. It was 60 and rain but the temp is suppose to drop into the 40’s later. Ran 3.86 miles. It was lightly raining at the beginning but hard at the end. It wasn’t bad :). I didn’t melt and felt so great at the end. Really felt like a runner today. Good feeling!

I’m cheering everyone on. Not sure why I haven’t been posting, been boring. Playing too much golf but that has to end soon. Last night I looked at my H and said what are we going to do all winter. This stinks.

Don’t give up yet Deb!!! We will see those 60’s and maybe 70 again this season - we must!!!

Last winter spooked us all I think with it’s harshness.

" Really felt like a runner today. Good feeling!"

:)

Fingers crossed for a milder winter for you!

Wow, lots of great workouts being done.

I biked today and didn’t have time to do more than 1 hour, so I stopped at 11 miles. Interestingly, I felt I was working during that hour, but for the first time in a while, I feel good tired but not completely whipped now. :)

sabaray:

Better not show your hubby the 100 mile endurance run events.

The original is the Western States. 100 miles. 18,000 feet of elevation gain, 23,000 feet of descent. This year’s winner did it in under 15 hours, which is averaging just under 9 minutes per mile:

<a href=“Maps – Western States Endurance Run”>http://www.wser.org/course/maps/

And, once you’ve finished that a bunch of times, you might get one of the 140 or so invites to the Hardrock 100 in the Colorado Rockies. 100 miles. 34,000 feet of elevation gain. 34,000 feet of descent on a loop course. Rugged mountain trails. Average elevation of 11,000 feet with a peak of 14,000 feet. This one ends with a 2 mile climb, averaging 18% grade, at the 92 mile mark! Yikes.

The record for this one was set by this year’s winner. Just under 23 hours, averaging 13 minute miles.

These folk are really nuts! ^:)^

Tell him that you signed up for the next marathon… Just don’t say where. ;)

http://www.icemarathon.com/

I think we posted enough crazy crap here to completely intimidate and discourage those posters who might have been on the fence about joining the thread! We don’t mean that exercise is all about running a 100K downhill on ice! We are just kidding. :)

Ultras and ice… :open_mouth:

I think I’m just going to focus on completing my first one. Upright and smiling. I’m looking forward to a week after November 15th when I can just go for a short run because I want to, not because it’s part of the plan.

I have to say I am very proud of Mr. Sabaray. He signed up for the TRx course I completed and has been going. Today when I went to my core class, he came along and did some elliptical contraption that allows for lateral movement (I think it’s an Octane?- not something I use). Just getting out of bed at 5 am is a major accomplishment for him, but to come along to the gym is a real step in the right direction. He’s made it there five days in a row now.

Finally had time to go back and read the articles about incline and caloric burn running on a treadmill that kicked off so much of the recent discussion. Obviously, whether running or cycling, inclines or hills will significantly increase caloric burn but there was so much sloppily presented information in those articles. Everything from using 220 - age to determine max heart rate for applying target % targets to how many calories will be burned in a given amount of time on a treadmill at a given speed and % of incline. Also defining relaxing cycling as 10-11 mph and vigorous as 14-15, without taking into account the terrain and fitness level of the rider is again misleading.

Fo r me, I’ve got to include some hills in my rides, otherwise it becomes very boring. I would think it’s the same for many runners. When I take my summer vacation each year at the Delaware shore, the riding is all flat and the only “hill” is going over the Indian River Bridge. I can’t ride more than 30 miles without going numb physically and mentally. In contrast, hills can’t be avoided riding at home and even if my speed slows down to 9 mph on the really steep ones, it keeps thinks fresh and interesting.

I really like the Garmin GPS devices. The new ones with Firstbeat technology give very accurate hr based caloric burns and also provide GPS based read outs of % grade and total feet climbed. Lots of solid information to both monitor your performance and enable you to play and keep things interesting.

Thank you! On my rides at the trail I’ve been visiting 3.5 miles (half the trail) is pretty much a continuous incline. I don’t know the grade, but I’m working hard and haven’t yet averaged more than 11 mph on my rides. “Relaxing” my butt!

Maybe someday, right now that 3.5 mile stretch is tough for me, especially the second or third time.

How accurate are the wrist GPSes for altitude?

My car gps shows altitude and it is nonsensical at times.

notrichenough, I don’t use GPS for “altitude” but for total feet of ascent on a ride, so it’s measuring relative “up” changes as I go up and down the hills. My Garmin 800 bike computer/GPS seems pretty accurate in giving total footage of ascending when compared to mapping programs. I don’t know first hand how the GPS watches stack up but it’s all the same technology.

Nrdsb4, the hills never feel like they get easier, cause as you get fitter, you ride them faster and your legs still protest! My riding buddies and I always whine and complain to each other as part of the entertainment when we are climbing and lament that no matter how fit or fast we become, the hills still hurt, lol.

11 1/2 miles done (that I didn’t want to go do…). After fighting the heat as recently as Thursday night, this morning was 40 degrees when I woke up, 45 to start the run. I wore long sleeves over my Nuu-Muu dress and capris and never regretting having all that on! It was a pretty fall day. I did not do low HR today, but tried to keep it fairly comfortable, but 11 1/2 miles just isn’t all that comfortable right now for me. Slow but consistent pace and got ‘er done! Drove immediately to Dunkin’ for a pumpkin donut! (I’m not the clean eater on this forum, clearly.)

Nor am I. I MADE pumpkin donuts this morning - for real! Baked, not fried. :). And after my morning run, much shorter than MOWC but in the same temp range.
