Congratulations on the 20 mile ride! It’s a wonderful thing when you realized that you can actually exercise. I know it was a shocking revelation for me!

mowc:

Sounds like the Hawaii vacation from hell. Not that there was ever any risk, but it strengthens my resolve not to take up triathlons.

dad-of-3:

The knee issue will depend on whether you actually have a specific injury a torn ligament. Do you recall a specific moment of pain/injury or is this more of a chronic thing? There are so many different knee issues, including bone on bone arthritis, that it is nearly impossible to diagnose. In many cases, the docs just give a fancy name (patella-femoral syndrome) to general non-specific knee pain. Much of pain people feel in the front of the knee is actually caused by tight glute (butt) muscles. The big muscles of the thigh connect to the hip at one end and the knee at the other end. Tight hip muscles pull on the knee, making it seem like there is something wrong with the knee. Mike Boyle’s analogy: if I tie a rope around your neck and yank on it, you will say that your neck hurts, but there is nothing wrong with your neck The pain is caused by the rope yanking. Same with a lot of knee pain.

I experienced pain in the front of one knee when I started walking – only on the steep uphill bits. It was likely this kind of pain as it went away as I got in better shape (and started doing a done of hip exercises). That, of course, won’t be the answer if you have a torn ligament, but for most of us, it’s a management issue.

Back from camping and hiking. Gorgeous fall foliage in the White Mountains, driving along the Kancamagus Highway, doing a nice foliage hike, and camping one last time before the campgrounds close for the year this weekend. Little bit chilly, Got down to 36 degrees outside my tent last night. I was well prepared – two down sleeping bags and Power Stretch fleece and down booties for the win. Last night, sitting around the campfire, I wore Patagonia Cap 4 long johns and was comfortable. That stuff is amazing.

I did break out the rain gear as a shower passed over just as I finished setting up camp and ended up grilling steak in the rain.

[Quicky campsite video](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube):

Cozy campsite, idad. Glad you ad a good time.

MomWC…they call you momWC for a reason, don’t they. Glad WC is okay, sending the race mojo your way!

Dadx3 - I walk a lot and have a trick knee. Seriously check your shoes – get fitted – and do the other great stuff recommended. If your knee is arthritic at all, a magnesium supplement might also help.

Funny “Mobo” report/update:

…my h is a well-meaning, if sedentary, sweetie, so as you will recall, he picked up this one-speed trike thing for me while I was in San Francisco, likely because:

A) he’s worried about my neck issue lately and isn’t optimistic it will heal
B) he’s always been secretly convinced I’m too clumsy and osteo-compromised for mountain biking…you will recall his opposition when I bought one last year
C) he won’t feel silly if he joins me on HIS recumbent, (mind you, its a seriously fancy and fast recumbent)
D) he knew this thing wouldn’t top 4 mph and thought it would be a good way to slow me down ;)

Well, we finally had a family ride last night, and as he put it, it was like something from Benny Hill. I was about to load the crazy thing into my car and it started rolling down the very steep, long, front hill our house is on (different than back hill that I walk) that terminates in a fast country road. I ran like the dickens to catch the thing and let me tell you, it goes faster than 4 mph when nobody’s in it! I had to essentially tackle it, which somehow meant it and I were in a tangle rolling down the hill towards traffic. I managed to stop just before the road :)

Somewhat of an in auspicious start…

So we got to a flat, paved, safe 5k park trail that goes along the river and through a beautiful wetland - about 5 min. Up the road from our house (no shoulder to ride to get there, hence taking the cars).

So the steering on the thing is independent rear wheels. Right at the beginning of the ride, I’m giving er to see how fast I can make it go and somehow I lose control of the steering and topple the dam thing over in the weeds a few feet away from a creek ;)

At this point, mcson and mch don’t trust me on the damned thing, so they flank me going over a bridge, fearing I’ll end up in the water.

But once I got the hang of it and slowed down a little, it was terrifically fun. With only one speed, its great work on the legs, but no back/spine/neck discomfort at all. Granted, it took me damned near an hour to make the whole 5k loop…my son was impressed that my “hill legs” could power those little wheels without pause (no coasting as it is chain less…if you stop pedaling at all, you stop…unless you’re on the hill  Maybe its the hill walking that helped me have the legs for it, but the airdyne helped too ;)

At any rate, its actually a fun little contraption and despite the majorly hilarious beginning, I love that I now have something I can use whatever my spine condition of the moment!

But I did also prove, unintentionally, to mch that there’s just no protecting me from tumbles  that’s just how I roll!

In other news, though I’m afraid almost to say it, my neck has suddenly unlocked the past few days and feels awesome! So I might be up for the “big girl’s bike” next time…but then again, this little trike is a blast, so maybe not!

Kmc, that’s quite a story! Goodness have fun but be careful!

Best of luck to your entourage today MOWC! Hopefully you can celebrate a good day tonight.

Sabaray, hoping its not too wet for your “20” today!!!

KMC, I love your story!

I am happy to tell you all I did a bit over 20 - 20.18 to be precise! And some walking to cool down. By 20 my knees were feeling it, I suspect as a result of my pratfall earlier this week. Next week I’ll do 14 and the following week 20-22, then taper.

I will now be showering and sitting on the couch following our triathlete for the remainder of the day.

CONGRATS, Sabaray! :)

Whoo to sabaray!

Following the ironman, maybe MOWC will check in here and tell us how she’s doing because I’m not sure I’ll be able to tell

4 trail miles, hunters out there which was not great but lots of mountain bikers too so that was good. Beautiful day, peak colors, perfect fall day.

Great job Sabaray!! Any rain??

Feel like I’m creeping but since MOWC shared her race number, here is Emily’s “page” http://tracking.ironmanlive.com/mobilesearch.php?rid=1143240156&race=worldchampionship&y=2014&athlete=2141&sex=f#axzz3FrgKw4Mg</a></p>

I think we are all creeping Abasket ;)

If I can read the splits right, she’s averaging 22mph on the bike which sounds really good. But I really have no idea lol!

Me too!

Thank you for posting the link. I’m also looking at the “live” tracking - Em just rode past Hapuna Beach park area.

I had problems finding the right link to the site, so I knew if I came here, you guys would be following, and there’d be a link!

We stayed at Hapuna Beach one time - it’s gorgeous!

Wow sabaray, 20 miles!

abasket, thanks for the link. Go Em!!

So much to comment on and so many kudos! MoWC–hope WC’s gf Em is holding her own in spite of the challenges.!

Yay, Sabaray! Excellent 20 running! And Nrds, great riding! Kmc–I have the theme song running through my head now.

idad–Your campsite looks so polished! The canopy looks like it would be great for this intense sunshine state.

3.1 miles running, 3 miles walking, weight circuit for me today

plantmom:

Hah. It was like the Keystone Kops trying to set up the canopy for the first time. I figured out the old one after a few tries, but first time with a new tarp and I had no clue where to put the stakes or how long to adjust the lines so it would stand up in the wind with just the first two poles.

[Youtube: How Many Geezers does it take to set up a tarp?](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)

Oh, well… at least it’s good for a laugh!

I was glad that I set it up first (one lesson I have learned) as a shower came through not long after.

I hope MOWC is ok that I posted the link! OMG, I just had no idea how intense this race is - all those MILES!!! So I don’t see any numbers for the running yet - do they post at the end???

Ran my own 5k tonight in honor of my good friend and my cousin who are running the Chicago Marathon tomorrow! I am not worthy of them, but showed my support in my own way.

No problem! She’s on the run. Apparently the wind was worst in years out on bike course. Off the bike 12th in age group and trying to gain. Some blessed clouds now. This event is insane. Winner is coming in soon. Exciting.
Em is wearing MY Garmin 220 ( long story) so it’s doing the Ironman!

I ran 2 miles at 4am. Trying to stay hydrated.

Can you tell how excited we all are for you and your family? Thanks for sharing and letting us feel a little connected to a really cool thing!!!

OMG, she is running the marathon! Go, Em!!!

If you ever been to the Big Island, you can really appreciate what kind of superhuman effort it takes to compete there. The road the athletes ride on is surrounded by black lava fields for pretty much most of the way. There is no shade anywhere - nada, zip, zero. The sun is brutal, and the heat reflected off the dark surfaces makes things even worse. I am in total awe people can bike for hours and then run a marathon in this kind of conditions.

First run split! 7:06 pace, 21:55 5K!
