Those Ahnu’s just arrived and I walked around my house in them. They are hiking shoes, not sneakers. I found them stiff and clunky. The color (I got a deep blue) is great, but I prefer my Merrill’s and Salomon’s for hiking, and the Nike’s for walking/running in wet weather. I’m sending them back.

If you’re still looking, idad, Salomon makes some very colorful waterproof shoes.

When I was hiking boot shopping, I tried both the Merrills and the Keens. I think the only difference is that you either have a “Merrill” foot or a “Keen” foot. One or the other will fit better. The Keens are more of a wide toe-box “earth shoe” shape. They fit me better than the Merrills did.

Otherwise, I see no need to replace one with the other until they wear out!

^^IDad, that is EXACTLY what my DH said about Merrells vs. Keens. The Merrells fit his foot funny, the Keens were perfect. I need a wide toe box even though my feet are narrow – I HAVE to be able to move my toes around. It 's a nervous thing – I am h*** on socks because of it.

Sounds perfect! I would call them “urban hikers”. They are heavier than a running shoe, but lighter than the Keen and Merrill hiking shoes. About the same weight as waterproof trail runners. For example, they are about 1 ounce per shoe heavier than the Brooks Adreneline GoreTex trail runners:

I don’t think the trail runners are as “stylish”. They are always going to look like a running shoe, never something that looks even remotely fashionable, although the Brooks is one of the better looking versions.

I’m guessing the stiffness you mention comes mostly from the Vibram hiking shoe soles.

Basement for me. Single leg deadlifts. Jungle Gym push ups. DB front squats. 3-pt DB rows. Felt good to pick up and put down something other than turkey and ribs!

Turns out Ahnu is a sister company to Ugg, Teva, and Hoka – all owned by the same shoe company. They’ve got a good niche: urban hiking shoes/boots in awesome colors. Perfect for city “hiking” or travel, with maybe an occasional jaunt on state park trails. Just what I was looking for as an upgrade to wet canvas Converse All-stars for snow/slush/rain! :)

I like to do “theme” gifts, so this will be perfect: three packages that go together.

I actually ordered two sizes so that hopefully one will fit on Christmas morning.

Sabaray, I’ll recruit you to tell my kids that when they relegate me to “yester-year” when we talk about fitness lol.

All this talk about exercise clothing for Christmas has me very excited about Chanukah which is about a week earlier. My kids may be impertinent wise-asses when it comes to our discussions about training but they do always get me the coolest athletic clothing for holidays and birthdays. This year I suspect will be “formal” working attire for when I open my studio in January and start (hopefully) training clients. Certainly beats the “work casual” clothing I wear to my office!

Oh I don’t know IDad, don’t you think we could model fitness fashion for the over 40 crowd? Then again, my daughter refused to let me video the Ice Bucket Challenge I did with my shirt off. Said it wasn’t dignified for someone my age lol.

Had a good workout at the gym with my trainer last night. We’re going to Chicago this weekend and will run the Santa Hustle 5K - it’s a pretty fun event.

iDad-your daughter will love the gifts! I really like that teal color.

CBBBlinker-a sunrise run on the beach sounds divine!

Tried a barre class with a friend. Pretty fun but man I felt old and stiff! We were the oldest two in there, but the happiest. The young people were deadly serious. Not sore this morning much to my surprise.

Trainer and swim today. Just getting back to normal.

Worked out with my trainer early this morning–lots of core and balance work. Also, she focused on legs; trainer says I’ve got very strong quads, but need to strengthen my hamstrings. Spent a fair amount of time on these exercises. First, single leg dead lifts with a KB–(difficult) and 2) bridges where I had my legs on an exercise ball and moved them in and out (difficult too, but less so than the previous exercise.) Also did something she called a “good morning”. You put a barbell (no weights) right behind your head–on shoulder tops. With the barbell on your shoulders, you bend your hips until your torso is parallel with the floor. (You have to keep your back and knees straight throughout). The most challenging part of that was making sure to get your body in the right position.

Going on a walk with D and her puppy later this afternoon.

Cardio + weights today. Great pumpkin ravioli last night for dinner – we stopped at Atwells Ave in Providence (Italian section) on the way home from the beach. Really yummy, but I usually try to avoid those carbs …
