Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Reporting from the downtown Seattle Lulu store: there are only one navy in size 6 and one pink in size 8 Fluffs left. Final sale. The 8 looks like it would fit me (5’6", 125ish).

Thanks for the multiple confirmations!

BB:

For something a little more “work” oriented, these waterproof rain shoes from LLBean look interesting, too:

<a href=“L.L.Bean: Page Not Available”>http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/83334</a>

She has said she hates boots so many times that I’d be gun shy buying her any height boots.

I think I’m going to get a pair of the Ahnu’s on Santa’s sleigh from Zappos and they can always go back easily enough (2 sizes so hopefully one will fit!). They also make them in a non-waterproof sneaker version (same basic styling), but the whole idea is something for snow/slush.

What do you guys think about colors? I like the gray and the blue and the teal. I know she had a pair of teal Converse All-stars that she really liked, so I’m thinking teal:

ahnu.com;

Teal is one of my favorite colors, too. Go for it!

Just an fyi - Ugg makes a duck shoe called Ashdale. They are sheepskin lined and sooo comfy! Most stores are out of stock, but I bet they will bring it back in the spring.

What about these Nike running shoes. I wear these I the snow and they keep me pretty dry

Those Nikes are not waterproof (i.e. GoreTex or comparable liner). I’m thinking something that you can actually step in a puddle or snow bank and not get your feet wet. I have some low cut LLBEAN GoreTex hikers and you can literally stand in a stream and not get wet toes (as long as the water isn’t deep enough to come over the top at the ankles. Brooks makes a GoreTex trail running shoe:

http://www.brooksrunning.com/en_us/womens-adrenaline-asr-11-gtx-waterproof-running-shoes/120166.html</a></p>

But it’s even more expensive than the AHNUs and the various Keens, Merrrills, LLBean trail hikers, and (I think) the styling leaves a LOT to be desired for anything but running. I get it for the nighttime reflectivity, but all the silver Brooks is using these days is butt-ugly.

Here’s the women’s version of the LLBEAN Italian-made GoreTex hikers that I have. They are very heavy duty – more than you need for city streets. And, none too stylish for a non-hiker/non-runner.

The Keen’s and Merrills are super popular, but very “hiking” in style:

I’ve got the house to myself again. Time to get back with the exercise, eating, drinking program! Sheesh. Holidays are rough on fitness. I am proud to say that I sat through a 3 hour movie yesterday and resisted all temptation to even look at the junk food and junk drink at the concession stand. I smuggled in a to-go thermos bottle of fresh brewed coffee!

I have the Keen Targhees and I love them. They are as comfy as my sneakers and I have been known to wear them for non-hiking purposes! DH even got a pair for our vacation and was pleasantly surprised. Told him to be thankful I spend so much time online chatting with my invisible friends just so his feet would be comfortable. ;)

So I did a TRX workout tonight and decided to experiment. I have a ceiling mounted TRX that hangs about 5-6 feet in front of my combination lifting cage/smith machine/cross-over pulley unit. I hung a second TRX from the unit’s chin bar. And then tried to do chest presses and rows with both my hands and feet suspended. The results were hilarious! On the chest presses, when I finally found the right height for my feet to give me the resistance I wanted, my feet were too high above my hand level for me to be able to readily put my hands on the handles. It was a constant battle to put my feet in the 1 set of cradles and then quickly grab the other set of handles before the leg height and angle caused me to fall forward from a kneeling position onto my face. It wasn’t pretty. It worked fine if I lowered the foot cradles but then I didn’t have enough resistence. Raise them and I got the resistance I wanted but I fell on my nose just trying to get into position. Then on the rows, I didn’t have any problem getting into a 4 point suspension position but it was like being on a swing set. Between pulling with my arms and pressing with my heels in supine plank position, I immediately started swinging fore and aft like I was on a swing set. Yeesh, me and my bright ideas. :-/

Yeah. Keens or Merrills was what I was thinking about. Perfect as far as function, just a little too “outdoorsy” for a decidedly city girl. The AHNUs seem more like around-town boots. I think she’ll really go for the colors.

I wear my waterproof hikers all the time in the rain, snow, slush. Fantastic to not have to worry about mud and puddles and snow.

MKAT:

Sounds hilarious! I’ve been doing a combo in my warmup: feet on ValSlides, hand on floor. A quick set of pushups and then “mountain climber” knee drives with my feet sliding on the Valslides. The pushups are a little harder because the feet aren’t really anchored. Seems to give a little extra core challenge.

The chest press/pushups with my hands in the TRX/Jungle Gym are hard enough for me. For a variation, try pushups with your hands on the ground and feet in the suspension straps. That’s probably my favorite push up. Awesome for the core and feet elevated makes the pushups harder.

I’ve done the raised leg push-up, IDad, and yes, I agree it’s a great exercise. My daughter had extolled the virtues of the 4 point suspended chest presses and I should know better than to follow the lead of a 25 year old trainer who spends 10 - 12 hours a day in the gym lol.

Not as many official workouts lately, but l have been plenty active. Much to get done. My calves are sore. I consider this a good sign.

Idad, you’re nothing but trouble when it comes to online shopping! I already own the Merrill’s (getting old) but now I want the keens!

Michael, I’m tired just reading your post…can’t imagine that kind of a workout! Way beyond geezer fitness!

Had to hit the treadmill last night for a bit over 5 miles. Sleet yesterday morning and cold rain last night. Taking a rest day today.

Idad is an enabler! But I’m looking pretty cute while I’m sweaty and stinky lol!

I had to run and post this before anyone else! It’s back! The party onesie! I saw it on http://www.luluaddict.com but it’s not on the website yet. Scroll down and you will find it, the party onesie! Words cannot describe it, you must see it to believe it!

Sorry for all the exclamation points. I got so excited ;)

I am loving the flurry fighter pullover, so cute.

Oh man, another website to follow! Thanks deb!

Here’s a funny fact…I have what I would call a vintage romper with capri length legs (Laura Ashley design - late '80s)…eerily similar to the runsie. I told H it would be fashionable again one day!

I bought a teal fluff off pullover from Lulu last year and LOVE it! Now I’m so tempted to buy the stained glass one this year, only because I like the color. Someone needs to hide my credit card from me. Last year I bought the size 6 – I’m 5’7" and 125ish (narrow hips).

iDad, I’ve ordered those Ahnu in blue! Haven’t come yet, so I can’t tell you about them. Another option might be these, from Nike: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/air-zoom-structure-18-flash-running-shoe/pid-1538999/pgid-10266627</a>. I was told by a salesman in a running shoe store that they are somewhat waterproof – not Goretex, but offer some protection. The problem with Goretex is that your feet don’t breathe and the shoes can be stiff. I own a pair of Merrill’s waterproof Sirens, and they are waterproof and lightweight, but a little stiff. The Nike’s are very comfortable – I did buy a pair, but haven’t worn them in rain and slush yet to report on that. (Can you tell that I need a pair of waterproof shoes?)

I like the workout stuff I have now. I can add a piece here or there to change things up, but I have the basics I need.

Resisting/trying to ignore all the shopping links …

More cardio today. It was supposed to be a run day, but since I’m on an every-other-day schedule, I’m waiting until tomorrow so I can run outside at the beach. (We’re going down for 1 night.)

I think even I will pass on the Party Onesie! I am at work wearing one of my Nuu-Muu running dresses with brown leggings and booties and a cute pullover sweater over the dress. I love when I can get “normal” wear out of my athletic clothes.
I’m trying for a noon run today and am feeling less than motivated.
