“Even at lower end clubs the price has been in that ballpark, and every club I’ve ever belonged to prohibits you from using a trainer who is not an employee, which is understandable I guess. I’m guessing the trainer gets around half of what you pay the club.”

What I’m describing isn’t that I’m using a trainer who isn’t an employee; both of mine are employees of the clubs where they work. It’s just that I belong to the one club (my park district, which is inexpensive) and I don’t belong to the other (which is primarily a racquet club, but just happens to offer pilates as well). For the second, it’s still cheaper for me to pay the non-member rate for her than it would be for me to join and pay a member rate for her.

The $40/hour that I get through my park district is actually on the low end of the spectrum around here - I would say that most trainers are more in the $60/hour range.

Mkat:

Depending on your clientele, I think an even more sophisticated approach for some new clients would be to build the FMS screen movements into a warm-up/workout and assess without ever giving them the formal test. A formal FMS screen, for me, the first day at 250 pounds would have been humiliating and an intense negative motivation. And, would have given no particular information, as clearly I need to work on all of it! I can’t really imagine anyone over the age of 50, who doesn’t need to work on “all of it” as part of their routine. I guess the screen would be most useful if you need help convincing someone of the need to work on those movement patterns.

My standard 15 minute warm up these days is based largely on a Mike Boyle idea: to build the seven FMS movement patterns into the warm up so improving those patterns, specifically, is a daily routine.

Whew. 5 miles running outside. It’s just a tad over 60, and the air is dry for a change so this all felt good.

I’ve been neglecting weight bearing exercises for the last few weeks. I need to remedy this, ASAP.

Had to seriously pry myself out the door to run after work. I ran from the house with my headlamp. Once I got out there, it was nice. I looked at Christmas lights and just took it easy. 5 miles for the day- chipping away at the goal of 1300 for the year.

Two big dog walks today. Cold, damp and blustery. They seemed to enjoy it - I don’t have a fur coat though. Going to try and jump start my running tomorrow morning.

On trail running, I do think the presence of a large number of trail runners does negatively impact the hiking experience in some small way, especially on trails where it’s not that easy to get out of the way. It’s the same issue as runners and bikers sharing the same path – the closing rates lead to being surprised.

Doesn’t have much impact for me as very, very few people run on the trails I hike. But, in a suburban park like the Brentwood park in the article, where you have two different types of trails, it’s probably non un-reasonable to keep the running on the wider running paths and the hiking on the narrower hiking paths.

Back to the basement for me. Rear foot elevated split squats just about killed me. Those things never get any easier… Well, I guess they do, but then I grab heavier DBs and they are hard again.

My hardest workouts right now? Wrapping Christmas presents. I just don’t think guys have a wrapping gene. Bless my heart, I try…

Can’t put bows on any packages until Christmas Eve or they all get little kitty teeth marks.

I had to put together four little gift bags - running group does Secret Santa for a Head Start class so this morning I was wrapping five small items to put into said gift bags - so 20 items before work. Wrapping is H’s job at our house - he takes far more pride in doing a great job! I just want to get it done.

I get to go to a legal seminar tomorrow at 4 where they wrap Christmas presents that we bring while we are in the1 hour seminar. Then we drink wine! Sweet!

IDad, I think there is much merit to your comment about the movement assessments. For that matter, I think it would equally apply to all assessments that rely on performance metrics of some type. The inability to perform would serve as a deterrent to changing behavior to promote adherence to an exercise program. I would delay those kinds of assessments. On the other hand, static postural assessments are much less likely to promote feelings of inadequacy and can still provide a lot of useful information for exercise programming.

On another note, I tried handstand push-ups tonight with the TRX. What a hoot. Did it with one leg in a cradle and the other leg extended next to it. Really requires core engagement to maintain body alignment since only one leg is supported. It was a tough one but fun.

For anyone wondering, here’s a short video showing the Functional Movement Screen tests:

<a href=“Functional Movement Screen - YouTube”>Functional Movement Screen - YouTube;

Really terrific set of movement patterns that are surprisingly challenging. The idea of test is to identify anything that hurts or any movement that can’t be done or any movement that is noticeably different on the two sides. It’s scored on a scale of 1 to 3 with a zero for pain on any test. The warm up I routine I borrowed has at least one exercise specifically designed to improve movement on one of these tests.

I just used the Jungle Gym for the rear foot elevated split squats today. I really like my foot in the strap rather than on a bench as it allows the rear foot to move back and forward to the ideal position. I started doing these with each rep from a dead stop at the bottom with my knee on an Airex pad. Takes away any chance to cheat reps with momentum and bouncing off the bottom. I tried dead stop with 3-pt rows, putting the DB on the ground between reps. Really makes each rep count. Figured, correctly that the same thing would work with rear foot elevated split squats.

Used ValSlides for the ValSlide alligator crawls – a brutal core exercise, especially the change of direction:

MOfWC - how cool is that! How many CLE hours does the wine drinking count for? :)

Ran a whopping (not) 4.1 miles. It is unbelievably hot here!! 68 degrees downtown and pouring rain - outrageous. We might get some extra moisture from the SF storm.

Idad, I will wrap your gifts for you if you “punch the clock” for me…I reintroduced myself to kettlebells and planks yesterday and let’s just say it doesn’t take long to lose strength ;)

MomWC, I want meetings where we can wrap gifts! We have a staff eating tomorrow…maybe I should introduce the concept ;)

kmcmom- I wasn’t clear! The GOOD part is that the gifts get wrapped FOR you by the law firm staff. They swear they enjoy it. We just sit and earn an hour of ethics credit and drink wine and then they carry the wrapped gifts to your car. (perks of in-house counsel) Tuesday night I went to a law firm function at a upscale nail salon where we got free mani/pedis and drank wine. (women only) I have to run to work off the wine and snacks!

3.6 miles on the Landice this morning. Intended to go outside but I heard the wind whistling and it was 32. I just couldn’t do it today. I would have been fine in all my puffy stuff, but I wimped out. Watched country music videos on TV.

I am definitely working for the wrong firm. Just saying.

5 miles this morning. Handed off my Santa gifts. Was wishing I had a pair of those nifty Spiderman gloves stashed in a gift bag. Really windy.

H is at the doctor - wouldn’t let me come along. I think he is probably going to need a statin.

I love buying gifts, hate wrapping them. Gift bags don’t make it “better” for me. But since no one is offering to do it for me, I’ll get it done!
Those of you who get your exercise done in the morning, kudos to you! No can manage to do most of the year - leave the house by 7:20 each morning and still have one home to often drop off at school. I’m not willing to get up earlier than 6am during the week!

Trainer and swim. Nicely sore from squats yesterday.

Hoping Bunsen is okay. And Deborah T.

All’s good here. I got somewhat soaked this morning, but that’s about it. I would have been completely drenched if I’d gone out a half hour later. There wasn’t much wind either, yay! If it was or is supposed to be particularly rotten out today I wasn’t even aware of it. Of course, I have been known to be out of the loop, lol. Thanks for asking, Sabaray.

Hard to visualize where you all are out there - looks like the whole area is impacted in one way or another!
