Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

I loved the feeling today of going for a ride and feeling really chilly but being pretty sweaty an hour later!

I think it was in your local paper, but here is some coverage.

http://running.competitor.com/2014/12/news/dallas-marathon-winner-upstaged-relay-runner_119870

Thanks, BB. DH wants the elliptical. I find them boring and woruld prefer a running achine, but he calls it a clothes hanger  The person we know who has the Octane says the company was started by people from Precor.

@MomofWildChild:

I feel so bad for the female winner not getting her moment:

Do you know if there was any rule, written or otherwise, for her changing into “the full marathon area”? Is this something she should have realized or a fault of the way the race was organized?

Right - it seemed that she fully knew she was going over to the marathon area - she made that choice.

Moderate temperature and I found a new path I like. Yes!

I don’t think there is any real rule. I’m sure she had no idea someone was about to come along and win the women’s division! There isn’t a big concentration of runners with marathon times that fast at the Dallas race.

^^^Thanks. Maybe it would be a good idea to have the various participants wear different color bibs as someone else in the thread mentioned.

First winter hike of the season. Just a little one, three miles up and over a little hill at Pawtuckaway State Park. Just the right amount, actually. Real mixed bag of conditions: mud, snow, frozen leaves, wet leaves, glare ice on rocks, bare rocks. Wore MicroSpikes and they were fine. Temps in the upper 30s. Just wore a long sleeve base layer shirt and hiking pants for the uphill. Put on a super light windbreaker for the down hill.

Felt awesome to get some fresh air in the outdoors. Holidays and foul weather have kept me of the trails for about six weeks.

Need to get snow for full blown winter hiking/snow shoeing at this point. The mixed bag was fine today, but burying the sheets of ice on the exposed rock would be a plus…

Pilates reformer today. Finished up with 25 minutes on a new machine in the gym–Jacobs Ladder. It was a staircase type thing. Not easy.

Another day in the 50’s. Another fun run! Thank YOU December!!!

They always have different colored bibs- but who’s looking at the end of a race?

Glad you got a good hike in, iDad.

Bromfield: 25 minutes on Jacob’s Ladder! Wow. The most I’ve done is 15 minutes. It’s hard.

Cardio + weights this morning. For cardio I was on an Expresso Bike – anyone use these? There are lots of virtual bike rides to choose from, and a pace rider. You can “change gears” depending on the grade (uphill or downhill) of the course. Yeah, my leg muscles were feeling it when I finished. Now off to walk the puppy.

4.2 outside this morning. I thought it would be light enough at 6:15 to go without the headlamp and I was wrong. I could see well enough, but I didn’t feel reflective or visible enough. Lesson learned.

In defense of the half marathoner who broke the tape, this may have been a herculean effort for him. His thinking may have been hazy at the end.

Yes, I would think that seeing a tape would have been a big clue, but still.

The first half I finished, way way back in the Stone Age, I finished in 2:2x. We ended in a stadium. Right when I entered the stadium there was a huge cheer. I thought “wow, how nice. People support even the ordinary runners like me.” Then I realized that the winner of the full marathon had reached the stadium right before me.

CBBB, I have not tried a treadmill or stationary bike with virtual scenery. I always loved cycling outside and was kind of surprised I found it pretty boring using an exercise bike at the gym. It would be fun to try and see if I felt the virtual ride did help make it a better experience.

I worry about runners that run on the roadside when dark. Just too risky. I try to avoid roads even when it is light outside.

The “good” news re: the dark. 5 more days and the days start getting longer!

The half marathoner was actually part of a marathon relay, and maybe she ran great, but still…she was in a relay.
