I wish my DH would get excited about a fitbit…or any type of exercise gear. We have an exercise bike in the basement he doesn’t touch, and I’ve given him a mat and other paraphernalia but nothing gets used, really. Maybe we SHOULD get a dog. Dogs clamor for attention, unlike dumbbells.
Of course, you should only get a dog if you really want one, can care for and love it daily, have the space for one, etc. That said, getting our first dog 4 years ago was one of the best things we ever did overall but importantly, in terms of exercise for all of us in the house. We don’t have a fenced in yard, so pup gets taken for a minimum of three 15 minute walks daily - often more frequent or longer - and that means LOTS of daily steps taken by all family members. It’s good for all of us to get out in the fresh air!!!
It is -25 with wind chill today. Walking the dog is not fun for me or her while the weather is bad. Guess it will be an indoor workout day!
Dogs are terrific exercise partners. Mood boosters, too! The dogs are my favorite children. They are always happy to see me, listen attentively and don’t talk back. When Sabadog’s predecessor died quickly and unexpectedly, my weight went through the roof. I was so sad that I ate like crazy. I avoided walking because I didn’t have Mr. Big any longer and didn’t want to have to tell everyone he had died! Even now I’m tearing up thinking about him - he was one of a kind. That’s why I need two dogs now- big paws to fill.
Welcome, rockymtnhigh! I’m a little late adding my 2 cents, here, but will post another vote in favor of the Galloway method. I started on it about a year ago (although there were several months I couldn’t exercise due to a broken foot bone) and really like it. Get an interval timer – either from the Galloway website, or from the Gymboss website (more colors to choose from.) As for workout timing, I’m definitely a morning person – if I don’t exercise in the morning, I don’t exercise. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told myself, “I’ll just go a mile; even if I don’t feel like doing anything today, I’ll just do a mile.” Once I get started, I always end up going well over a mile. Getting out the door is the hardest part. As for distraction, I just discovered Season 1 of the Serial podcasts – SO interesting it makes me look forward to my run days. (I do the run/walk thing every other day, with other cardio + weights on the off days.)
kmc & Momannoyed – add my H to the “unexercisers” list. Really, as in none whatsoever. I can count on 2 hands the number of times he has walked our puppy since we got her in March. When he does get some unintentional exercise as the result of doing some needed chores, he ends up being sore and achy for days.
4.5+ miles run/walk, plus Episodes 2 & 3 of Serial this morning.
I’m getting worried about interesteddad! Pipe up!!
20 degrees with a wind this morning and I was short on time, so downstairs to the dreadmill for me! 3 miles. I plan to go to the 75 minute hot yoga class after work (well, I have to leave work a little early for it). I blocked it out on my Outlook so no one messes me up by scheduling a meeting.
Me too! Where is he?
I went running first thing this morning, because the forecast was for a huge temperature drop around 9 am. It was 40 degrees, but incredibly windy, so one direction was miserable and the other fine. 5.2 miles, done.
MoWC, I always thought Nashville, being in the south, had mild winters, but your temps rival those in the chilly north.
Our winters seem to have gotten colder. It’s definitely a lot colder than I experienced in Dallas, with a lot of gray, rainy days. The extreme cold usually doesn’t last that long, but the system that is affecting the upper Midwest right now is coming our way! We don’t get much snow, but we will get a couple of dustings (or a few inches) a year and maybe an ice event. Today is sunny at least. We have had WAY too many gloomy days this year.
Looks like iDad was last on CC January 1st (sorry to creep on you iDad, but your absence called for it.
)
Hope all is ok in his world…
Disappointed that my yoga workshop was cancelled yesterday–didn’t have enough participants. Ended up going to a regular slow flow class. Did Pilates reformer today and also walked outside for 3 miles early this morning. I’m starting to feel more comfortable with the reformer–halfway through the class sessions I purchased.
Let’s hope iDad is on a very fine adventure.

Intermittent rain today here. 50% odds off getting soaked.
Maybe Idad is having computer problems and will be back soon.
I had trouble logging in over the weekend. It seems to be corrected for me at least.
My doggie walk about an hour ago confirmed that there will be no running outside for awhile…plenty of ice out there, snow expected tonight and frigid temps so no melting for the foreseeable future. Blah!!!
re: dogs as good exercise companions, did you ever see the Dear Kitten video where the Cat is telling the kitten about being put on a string, dogs being the worst marionette ever?

Going to post this on the WLFDummies thread but thought some of you might enjoy this - while not ever at 250 pounds, the emotions shared here were some of my own and I’m guessing some of yours as well on this journey called “fitness”. I just love this article!
I survived the first day back at work. Yay me! I’m home from a good workout at the gym with my trainer. Goodness, the gym was packed! Between the frigid weather and the New Years Resolutionists there wasn’t a parking spot or piece of cardio equipment to be had!
MOWC and BB - thanks for your input regarding marathon training. Sometimes I overthink things. I’m going to do it! Not sure where or when, but I will run a marathon in 2015.
Sabaray-glad that your husband is enthused about his fitbit. I know getting fitbits last year for Christmas was a huge factor for both DH and I each losing 35 lb in the past year. DH is super competitive about the most stupid stuff and the app is very motivating. Double bonus that you husband is walking the dogs and taking that off your plate in the morning!
Deb922-let us know how your husband likes the Surge and if you get one. We are planning to upgrade to the Surge as soon as it’s available (I haven’t seen them for sale yet). I love my Force, but I really like the idea of having the heart monitor as part of the Surge to be able to get better feedback.
I’m also a big fan of the dog as an exercise companion. And a big help with the Empty Nest syndrome!
Last night did ankle light wraps with treadmill intervals and it worked well for 2 miles then I switched to regular time for 3 miles. Did a lot of stretches and iced the ankle- much better today. Did 5 flights of stairs four times today and no problems. No run today, stretches only. The dog sounds nice.
Survived the 75 minute hot yoga class. Boy does that wear me out!
Garmin announced the Vivofit 2 today at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Vegas. It sounds great- improvements include a backlight and an audible alarm to get you moving. Still claims 1 year battery life.
Trying to do better with weekday breakfasts. I am thinking about a crust-less quiche – anyone know if there is a trick to modifying a quiche recipe to omit the crust?
