She made it! Thanks for asking. It rained on her for 12 hours, and they had calf deep water in places and had to climb up over an overpass to avoid deep water. It is a paved course, but the rain washed it out in parts because it is by the Pistol Creek (it’s called The Pistol Ultra). It took her 26 hours 28 minutes and she got this awesome belt buckle with a gun imprint on it. She had huge blisters and her boyfriend (of triple Monkey fame) ran the last half with her, got her food, helped her change clothes a few times etc. She is so happy. She slept for 13 hours the night after it.
That Diamond Head hike is hard, isn’t it? Good luck.
3.5 mi on the treadmill and stretches with a netflix movie. success. tried another pair of shoes at home- need to go shopping this weekend for more padding. I noticed if eat very little calories (100) for lunch I am much less hungry the rest of the day.
I’ve heard tales of exercise bands breaking and snapping back to hit you, but wow… broken facial bones and then sprawling to break ribs, too. Punctured stability balls have been know to inflict pain and suffering, too.
It happens more than you would think. I discovered, fortunately through a close inspection, that 3 of my tube bands with handles had dry rotted. Not visible except under load.
Yikes - I was thinking of Harry Reid this morning - I was working on the Reformer with springs and all I could think of was how terrible it would be to be hit in the face (or anywhere) if a spring went flying!
Nice Reformer session this morning followed by three miles on the treadmill (not so nice) but just easier than dressing for outdoors. It’s cold here today - they are calling for wind chill in the sub zero tonight, which is pretty unusual for our area. Might be another treadmill day tomorrow.
I got one of those Charley Horse cramps in my calf in the middle of the night. That has not happened in YEARS! I suspect it was a combination of the standing on my toes poses in hot yoga and wearing ballet flats all day yesterday. It was still so sore this morning that I couldn’t even try to run. It’s 20 degrees with 9 degree windchill outside, so it was going to be inside anyway. It seems to be loosening up, so will try after work.
That Harry Reid thing really struck me (pun intended), too. When I’m using the Jungle Gym straps I am always afraid I’m going to crash to the ground. H assures me that everything is secure.
4.8 miles today, on the treadmill. While I do enjoy running outside, I do have my temperature limits. 18 degrees this morning, with a breeze = below my limit.
Yesterday’s “exercise” was sidestepping Grand Jury duty – which I did successfully. The lottery gods graced me with a very high juror number – I think I was about third from last. I think they took 30 people total – 23 jurors + 7 alternates. The judge, in her opening remarks, basically said she’s heard every excuse out there, won’t let people off for just any reason, etc. – and yet, they went though about 130 people to get the 30. The commitment would have been for 3 - 4 days a week for 3 months! I do think it would have been interesting, and if it had been for 3 weeks, I would have hoped for a lower number.
So “Harry Reid” will most likely become a thing among fitness enthusiasts, right? As in “I almost did a Harry Reid this morning at the the gym.”
Wow. -35!!! Can’t even recall when it was the last time I experienced that!
An ultra that includes 12 hours running through muddy terrain under pouring rain! My hat is off to these superhumans! WOW!!!
Well, our Diamond Head hike was nice, but I felt like it was somewhat a bust. The trail to the top is only 0.8 miles long. That’s less than my walk from the bus stop to the top of the downtown hill! So we were at the top in under 20 minutes, absorbed the gorgeous views, and headed down. I recall the trail being very steep and the hike being very strenuous, but it did not feel like it this time around. Mr B joked that my everyday schedule conditioned me for such adventures well. To supplement the short hike, we did a little bit of mall walking (another pair of gorgeous shoes to combat wrinkles on my face, LOL), then headed to the beach to watch the sunset. It was a smart decision to wait until the crazy traffic thinned out!
There was a young family hiking up the hill: mom, dad, and a trio of elementary school aged kiddos. They kept a pretty fast pace going up and even sprinted for a few yards at a time. At the very top, their dad found a secluded platform behind some bushes and started doing push-ups, burpees, etc. idad would have been happy to see that! When the dad emerged from the bushes, one of the kids asked how many push-ups he did and decided to outdo his dad! The kid did very well! A family that exercises together… is a happy family.
It sounds like a nice hike, though. My daughter/son in law did a hike around there somewhere that they thought was extremely hard and scary. Must have been a different one.
NMinn- I could not leave the house in that. We are heading for 5 degrees tonight, and we are all thinking the world is ending in Tennessee!
I did the Diamondhead hike a few years ago. I made it a decent hike by walking from my hotel to the trailhead, and then walking back. I don’t remember it being very strenuous – but I am in pretty good shape, too. I do remember there were a lot of stairs at one point.
I was a total slug yesterday-- I can’t remember the last time I did absolutely nothing, didn’t leave the house. It was just too cold and the snowflakes didn’t help. Today is supposed to be even colder, but I’m meeting a friend at yoga, so that’ll get me out.
I used to get those leg and foot cramps all the time. I would have to sit stretching them for a long time before they’d go away. I once got one while driving, and had to pull over to the side of the road and stretch it for 15 minutes before I could continue. They are horrible. So far, a banana a day seems to be warding them off, fingers crossed.
Yikes, MOfWC! Charley horses are worse than being in labor! I have not had them for a while. Mr B swears that it is the little capsule of magnesium we take daily that helped us both to completely get rid of those nasty leg cramps. It definitely seems like it does something, and it is among recommended by WebMD remedies (and so are bananas!):
I can’t top -35, but my pup was clipping a FAST pace on our morning short walk with -10!!! Tomorrow morning supposed to be “double” that at -20. Yuck.
Well, took my first spinning class this morning! And survived! - double win! Got lucky and a research doc that I know here is a class veteran so she helped me get my bike set up - seat and handlebar height, etc. It was a work out! Employed my breathing techniques from running to help me through but I was able to keep up. Didn’t vary my resistance too much, but did bump it up for a few “hill” segments. I’ll have to go back and read the comments you all made last week to me as to what makes a good class and what doesn’t.
Rounded the class out with a 15 minute track run. And a nice shower after it all!
abasket- Congrats on the spin class and glad you liked it!
I haven’t had a Charley Horse in years! I really think hot yoga depletes some minerals. I will need to add the magnesium pill and/or more Nuun for hydration.
MOfWC, I think you are right about the yoga being the cause. I bet an hour of hot yoga is a sweat equivalent of a 4 hour run! So you probably lost as much electrolytes as you would during a marathon, but did not replenish them fully:
Magnesium does help cramps. I try and take an epsom salt bath once every week or two as well as taking it with my calcium.
Nuun seems to give me digestive issues, so I am sticking with emergen-c till something better comes along.
My dogs backpack came yesterday. http://wolfpacks.com
It fits him great! Much better than the ones at REI, ( hes a mix, so standard sizes don’t fit) and 1/2 the price. So as soon as I can put weight on my left foot, we are going hiking. For now it’s still limping around the neighborhood.
But I can get him used to the pack, for carrying his own water & food.
Can’t wait to wear him out. I guess it was a good idea to get a young muscular dog, rather than a cute little ball of fluff that I might end up having to carry.
