Thanks for the suggestions MNKat and Emerald. Thought I might as well get my money’s worth on that bike I bought. Seems like a boat and a bike aren’t real good investments in ohio since you can only use them for 3 months out of the year!
Wish I was hiking Hawaii too, did you see any rainbows?
Completed frozen 5k @ Disney
Dopey challenge had 13k folks cool running by Epcot ball as sun came up.
1 down 3 to go= 45.5 miles left,W/ fitbit: 3 calories burned per step.
It was 2 degrees this morning- seriously? I didn’t even want to get out of bed to run INSIDE!!! 1.1 mile done just in case something comes up later. Otherwise, a few more after work inside. I had planned on hot yoga this afternoon, but the logistics just aren’t going to work out today. The sun is shining at least.
Congrats author! You almost got a truly frozen 5K, too. My thermometer read a chilly 37 degrees not too far from the Epcot ball–coldest morning of the season so far. Beautiful sunny day, though.
My ankle doesn’t feel any worse for the wear today, thank goodness. I’ll be taking it easy with only some easy walking later on.
Went to the gym for indoor cycling–temperature was -2 degrees when I started the car. After cycling, I felt good so I went and did some work with kettlebells–swings, halos, get-ups. As I was doing swings I thought of the posts here about accidents with equipment. I’m always afraid of having the KB go flying out of my hands and crashing.
BB – hiking in Hawaii sounds wonderful. Pmom–hope your ankle is on the mend.
@Author, can you explain this or am I out of the loop??? Was your frozen 5k this morning???

Re: the new Vivosmart:
If anyone purchases one, I’d love to hear your feedback on it. Looks like Amazon is selling them for $169 - steep or not steep??? I noticed that LLBean has the Vivosmart available for purchase - I have $70 LLBean bucks burning a hole in my pocket - if they run a 20% off any item coupon, would make the purchase appealing to me…!
Vivosmart- I am usually a VERY early adopter, as y’all know. I have opted to not get the Vivosmart at this time. One of my running friends got it and she likes it, but she doesn’t “love” it. Here’s what she wrote earlier when I asked about it “i like it but don’t love it simply because the distance is so off and therefore the calories for the day are way off.
i do like the messaging – it has been helpful at work when one of the kids gets in touch with me. i can see that they texted me and then i can check my phone.
i love the alarm! that was one of the main reasons i chose to get it.”
The screen is sort of hard to read and she doesn't use a lot of the features. I decided it didn't get me enough over my Vivofit to make it worth it. That said, I think the screen is really cool looking and I know I will be tempted by the next version of it. It's not that much more than Vivofit, so I wouldn't fault you for getting it! I am definitely going to get the Vivofit 2 with some cute bands as soon as it is available.
Found a longer hike within a shorter drive. Should be a good one!
Cardio + weights for me this morning. Effective temperature was -13 when I drove to the gym. My car was barely warmed up when I got there. “Baby it’s cold outside!”
My vivofit is really off on mileage (and steps, if they are not treadmill/straight line walking steps).
Knee is somewhat better. Couldn’t find my brace that slides my patella into the correct place, but found another brace that worked well enough.
Got down to 5* last night. Aerodyne time during the Caps vs. Flyers game!
Did an upper body workout with my trainer last night. Doing push-ups on the TRX aggravated a wicked headache but is was a good workout overall. My Fitbit Surge arrived today - I can’t wait to go for a run to try it out. But with windchill well below zero I don’t know when I’ll be able to get out for a run! I will probably go to the gym tomorrow and do the treadmill. I hate the treadmill, but I know it’s all mental.
It’s official, it’s real, it’s happening. Odyssey Strength and Fitness Studio. Studio renovations and equipment are complete. LLC has been formed. Business cards and announcement postcards arrived. Website is being constructed. Now all I need are some clients lol!
Congratulations, MNK.
Michael- That’s terrific! Best of luck with it!
Thanks Plantmom, yes great weather.
abasket, yes not really “frozen” except to Floridians ~60 outside right now. Disney runs 5k 10k Friday, 1/2 Sat and marathon Sunday.
- Castaway challenge where we board ship to Cay for 5k Wed.
Elevating legs.
Bravo Michael!
Yikes. It is COLD.
I was in the basement doing my workout when it seemed a little chilly, even with the space heater going. I checked the temp on my Garmin (gets a signal from a TEMPE sensor hanging on the zipper of my backpack over in the corner). 48 degrees. Went upstairs. 54 degrees in the living room. No heat.
I’ve been having problems with an intermittent thermostat. Once a week or so, I have to give it a little thump and then it works fine. I figured maybe a loose wire? So I took it apart and check all the wires. Still nothing.
At that point, the prospects of a heatless night in the single digits outside and 45 minutes to closing time at Home Depot sent me scurrying to change out of workout garb and into full Arctic regalia for a bonzai run to Home Depot for a new thermostat. I hope the landlord understands!
Hooked it up (with cold hands!), hit the HEAT button and BINGO! We have BINGO! Disaster averted. Of course, now I have to program the thing…
So, I got part of a kettlebell circuit done…
I am amazed at what people wear around here. 13 degrees this afternoon at the grocery store. Lots of guys in jeans, a hoody sweatshirt. No jacket, no hat, no gloves. One poor girl was in lightweight running pants/tights and Marmot Power Stretch Fleece. No hat. No gloves. No jacket. What are they thinking? They certainly haven’t thought about what would happen if a flat tire or car trouble left them by the side of the road in those temps…
I’ve broken out the [full deep freeze jacket](http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81vYe7vvygL._SL1500_.jpg). This thing is so toasty that I can’t even wear a sweater or fleece under it with 13 degree temps. Just a baselayer shirt. It’s gotta be below 20 to even think about it, but it’s warm no matter what! I’m just glad I got the heat working or I’d be sleeping in it tonight!
Wow, iDad. Glad you got it fixed! Also glad you have all that nice warm winter gear. I wore Uggs to work today. I believe in warmth!
Wow, congrats, Michael! Too bad it would be a long drive for me to get to your studio.
Stay warm, my CC friends! I feel kind of guilty basking in the HI sun while the rest of CC is in deep freeze. Hiked a 4-5 mile dirt trail. Saw 2 monk seals sunbathing on the beach, a whale splashing in the distance, and giant albatross birds doing a courtship dance at Ka’ena Point. Here is the trail:

The plan for tonight calls for a glass of zero calorie wine. ![]()
Thanks everyone for your kind wishes.
The North Face store has become my favorite store this past week. Walked in today and said I wanted the longest, warmest winter coat they carry for my wife. 13 degree ambient temp this morning. Yikes.
