3.5 miles treadmill with netflix tonight- getting the hang of this - yeah still too dark and cold outside but may on saturday. H loves North Face coats.
Congrats, mnk! And kudos to idad re: knowing how to fx thermostat
A friend of mine is an hvac engineer and I think even his receptionist was out all night last night fixing furnaces
All the schools etc. are closed here for the blizzard. We’ve got quite a bit more to come, but so far it doesn’t look like the hill will be too bad if the sun would just hurry up and come up
Michael, congratulations! We need a road trip to Philly to come work out with you.
One hour of one on one Pilates this morning. I really, really enjoy it and the best part is seeing results. It will have to be the treadmill later on unless the wind dies down. Just too cold and I definitely don’t have the right gear for this kind of weather.
I lied. Hill was bad
took me almost twice as long to break trail! Good thing I didn’t think it was that bad before I geared up or I might not ave gone!
kmc- That hill sounds killer!
I finally got outside this morning. It was 22 degrees, but calm. I wore a Lulu puff, fleece Buff, wool hat and Polar Fleece tights. I was fine temperature-wise. Legs are tired. I think day after day on the treadmill wears out my legs. I think I run a little harder just to get it done, and there is the matter of no variation in stride or elevation (I usually don’t increase the elevation because it just feels too hard and slow and my treadmill has a slight incline even at 0 percent).
So- 3.1 miles done. Goal (once again) is hot yoga after work. We’ll see if it happens.
I’m just glad to get some fresh air. I haven’t even left the building for lunch for 3 days!
Swimming indoors today. That’s cold! Below freezing on the deck the last few days so we are discouraged from being out there due to the ice.
Met with trainer person, rode on trainer bike.
Congrats, MnK!
Hope you’re enjoying every minute of Hawaii, BB!
I walked with my husband last night. Bad news, ankle pain came back suddenly when we were out. . I called the doctor this morning, but he’s booked forever, so starting Monday I’ll have to put in early morning calls for a same day appointment. While I’m waiting I’m not doing anything else on this foot outside of moving around the house or outside as necessary.
I had an awful dentist appointment this morning to replace a filling that wasn’t done properly in August. According to my new Fitbit Surge, while I was in the dentist chair I had 9 minutes of Cardio and 43 minutes of Fat Burn based on the time in heart rate zones. A side benefit of terrifying torture at the dentist?
MNK-Congratulations on the new business and good luck with it!
Hoping to get to the gym to use the treadmill after work.
Lol C3Baker - and thanks for the good wishes.
Don’t we all wish cardio training was as exertion free as just elevating your heart rate ;). Actually, this subject was addressed in Edmund Burke’s book “Precision Heart Rate Training”. The context was why using simple % of max hr was not advised and instead the recommendation was to use the Heart Rate Reserve method of calculating target zones. It gets back to heart rate in the cardio training context really being just a surrogate measurement of % of VO2 max otherwise simply getting your heart rate up at a scary movie would have a training effect (which it doesn’t). The authors noted that it’s the use of muscles creating an oxygen demand and not simply the elevated heart rate that counts and therefore you want to use a method of calculating training zones that correlates well with O2 uptake and utilization. (The heart rate reserve method has a 1:1 correlation with % VO2 max while straight % hr does not.)
Made it through the 75 minute hot yoga class at 4:30. It got dark outside and for the 15 minute floor series she kept the room pretty dark, which was nice. I didn’t have to take any breaks today, so that’s progress. I put some Nuun in my water bottle, which might have helped. After 4 classes (this time around) I’m at the point where I can focus better on the poses instead of “oh my God, am I going to make it 10 more seconds?”
I don’t think I could stand that heat - and the dark - I get claustrophobic and I think I’d pass out from anxiousness about both!
Today I did a Cardio class - step/strength/core - not bad! Warmed up and cooled down on the indoor track before and after the class to get in a little mileage. Interesting to me that after a class my jogging seems sort of effortless.
It wasn’t pitch dark at all- you could still see people. It was nice after the glaring lights of the standing series. It’s an hour standing series and then 15 minutes on the floor. I can’t even describe how good it feels to be on the floor!
Another congrats to MNKat. Whenever your ready I’ll open your ohio territory franchise!
Ordered the kinetic Kurt road machine trainer. Supposed to arrive Monday. I’m going to set it up in the office basement so it’ll come in handy as work seems to be heating up.
No distractions today. Got through a really good workout in a chilly (52 degree) basement.
Single leg deadlifts
Jungle Gym push ups
DB front squats
3-pt row

Thermostats are easy. Just a switch that connects two wires to turn the heat on and disconnects the two wires to turn the heat off. It won’t even electrocute you. Low voltage like doorbell wiring. Worst case last night, I could have taken the wires off the thermostat and just touched them together to make the heat run. Off course, it would have run non-stop.
Thanks Plantmom and ohiopublic!
ohiopublic, enjoy the Kurt Kinetic. When you set it up, the trick is to have just enough tension on the roller to keep the tire from slipping under heavy load but not so much as to create artificial resistance and excessive tire wear caused by over tightening. One of the keys to consistency with this is to always pump the tire up to the same pressure before each ride. I always found 120 lbs to work well (even though I ride outside at 100 lbs). I would test the roller pressure by holding the flywheel and grabbing the wheel by hand and trying to make it slip. Once I found the correct number of turns of the adjusting knob from the initial contact point, it remained fairly consistent as long as I checked tire pressure. For me, it was 2 1/2 180 degree turns of the knob but this could vary based on tire compound. Did you get an indoor trainer tire? If you are going to ride on the trainer regularly, it’s recommended; your expensive road tires will appreciate it plus the compound is well suit to resist wear and grip the roller.
I’m off to my all day Spinning Instructor certification class today. I don’t think I’ll mind riding inside today when the alternative is riding outdoors in single digit wind chills :).
Kudos to you, MNKat!
I managed to fit in my run/walk yesterday. Had to shorten it up a bit (3.83 miles), squeezing it in after dropping our puppy at the vet to be spayed and before another appointment at 10:00. Still enjoying the Series podcasts – I only listen while I’m running, so it’s sort of a carrot for me.
Today’s workout will consist of trying to keep the puppy “quiet” as she heals. In fact the vet wants her “quiet” for 2 weeks. Yeah, right …
Plant mom, hope your ankle gets better!
CBB…puppies can take Valium, you know…
I know this because I once co-owned a cat for whom a vet prescribed same during our divorce. However, even on Valium, my ex swore the cat hated him and eventually turned up at the door with said cat and prescription to confer custody, despite my allergies. I had no trouble weaning sad cat from the Valium habit. I think the cat just really disliked the ex…
I am trying to motivate myself to do a longer hike this weekend over at the nature preserve. Hopefully by telling you I’ll do it will help ensure I do it.
Did a new class today–TRX circuit. Liked it very much–it moved quickly. Took a rest day on Friday. Going to do a hot yoga class tomorrow. Got results of blood work from yearly physical–really good numbers, which I’m attributing to exercise.
Good luck with your new business M&K.
My sister drugs her cats all the time! Two of mine have been on Prozac on and off- depends who decides to start peeing in the bathtub! Kitty Prozac is REALLY cheap!
17 degrees and sunny, so I bundled up and out I went. My hands really get hot in my running mittens, but if I don’t wear the non-breathable ones I’m too cold to start and my fingers turn white. 4.1 miles done. Today was supposed to be the longer run, but I decided to wait until tomorrow when it will be 30 degrees. Legs tired from yoga- standing on one leg as much as we do isn’t easy.
