Oh, no… That is not the kind of injury that we want to hear about. Is he in for surgery, screws, and plates? Or something that will heal on its own?
“McH fell on the ice and sprained plus fractured his ankle.”
Oh, nooo! Speedy healing to him.
Thanks for the well wishes for mch, guys. Idad, Its not a major fracture and so far, they’re thinking it will heal on its own – he goes back for follow up in 2 weeks because they want more X-rays when its under load. They have him in a boot cast so if he behaves he may be fine. But he’s already sedentary, stubborn, and has a high pain tolerance…perfect storm for re injury via non-compliance
I’ve campaigned heavily about proper healing to avoid future pain and weakness and he seems to be listening, which in itself is unusual enough. At first, he wouldn’t even go to urgent care
As a formerly fat guy, idad, I know you’re imagining right now what that kind of injury might have meant for you back in those days. That’s exactly my concern, as you can guess.
Looking back, it was exactly this kind of injury that sidelined the athlete in me in high school. I’d had a major slip and fall on pool of water on the lawn when I was returning home from a run. Id put on a final sprint spurt, and the momentum had me fly through the air and crash on the driveway pavement. In my case, I’d torn literally all the ligaments in my right foot, was on crutches for 8 weeks, and never properly healed/regained the strength. To this day, my right ankle is comparatively weak and has had a lot to do with my aversion to running.
That baggage kind of heightens my concern. But the good news is that his injury is nowhere near the mess that mine was and should heal clean if he just behaves.
Had sweat lodge yesterday and carried a lot of stones up the hill. Also had to serve as fire tender, which meant I also had to pitchfork 28 hot stones into the low lodge…my knee was not happy, which is a sign I need to get back to some squats! I’m grateful, though, that I had the strength to do it, and to last for several hours of physical work in the snow. Lodge in winter can be something of a challenge. But the steam bath and quiet reflection is awesome and worth it.
Pizzagirl, as a regular tumbler off said wagon I will say this…just remember how bad it might be right now if you had NOT banked all that healthy living. So maybe you drained down the health fund a little. That ok, because you know what to do to FILL it back up! So just do it! You’ll feel better…promise.
Healing thoughts to McH.
Pizzagirl – sorry to hear about the stress in your life. One of the things I love about this thread is the nonjudgmental support. I’ve fallen off the exercise wagon several times and always feel welcome when I come back. And honestly? I can think of several ways of “self-medicating” that are a lot worse than chocolate and coffee – fortunately you didn’t go there. Agree with MOWC – take care of yourself.
Yesterday’s “exercise” was walking around the New England International Auto Show in Boston, climbing in and out of cars, etc. It was a fun way to spend a cold afternoon, even though we’re not in the market for a new car – as far as I know. What I’d love to be driving is a Mini; instead I’m driving the SUV we need to haul around H’s boats. (Still haven’t figured out the logic of this.)
Mr. Sabaray would really enjoy that, CBB. Cars are his thing.
Sounds like you have your hands full with McH, KMC. A friend of mine was skiing over the holidays and was clipped by a snowboarder and injured her knee. When she went for her orthopedic eval, he told her it would have been much worse if she wasn’t in such good condition. So there is something to be said for banking healthy living!
Getting my miles back up - another nice day here so I put in another 6. Not fast but sometimes it’s just nice to enjoy the outdoors. Taking a day trip over the mountain - enjoy your Sunday, all!
10.1 miles- new longest since Toronto half in October. Still figuring out if I have it in me to do some marathons this year. I’m going to take some time and see how my longer runs go. It is a nice day here- 40-46 degrees with clear skies while I ran. I am running slowly, but not as slowly as I want to go for these longer runs. I REALLY want them to feel easy- and they don’t. I finished up a pretty good hill, and it was hard.
I thought this column by Kristin Armstrong was just excellent- I even printed out one part of it and put it on my tack board behind me desk at work. http://zelle.runnersworld.com/chatter/mile-markers-filled-to-the-brim
The part I copied is “There is something about this I like. I like to head out into the yuck on purpose and discover that it isn’t all that yucky, or that it can’t really touch me. When you sometimes choose to be uncomfortable, it helps you learn how to get comfortable in the times when you don’t choose it. It’s a practice in invincibility, to find joy anyway.”
Thanks for posting that, MOWC. Reminds me to push myself to get out there today.
KMC, hope hubby heals quickly.
Great article, MOfWC!
The rain was coming down really hard… This pansy decided to combine watching the game and running instead of battling the rain. 7.1 miles felt good!
Squats are killing my knees. Not even doping deep ones, but they nonetheless are making my knees excessively unhappy. Need this crummy weather to lift so I can get out and walk more. I can’t eat much less, so exercise has to be the answer.
Weather looked pretty awful in your area, CountingDown. I share your dislike of squats - I have a really hard time sitting back far enough on my heels.
My rear end is killing me this week. Tomorrow is a rest day.
MOWC - you should come to Richmond in November! We could run together - errr, I mean, I could follow behind you.
I’m probably not as fast as you, Sabaray. Seriously. It might be an option!
I just read today that one of the limiting factors with squats can be ankle flexibility, some of which you can’t change!
I did 6 mile run on a dirt track- really fun and slow but at least I did it. On schedule for the half training. Yay. Ended up with a shirt and pants it felt so hot. When the sun is out with the cool breeze it is so pleasant. Weather perfect 45 finally. This is a desert so not much rain. So far so good with the Hokas.
One of the things I work on in Pilates is ankle and foot strength - sounds strange, but it does seem to help.
I was just thinking about @blankmind - wondering how the marathon training is going?
I had drinks with someone who ran the frostbite marathon yesterday…does that count?
If not, afraid I have no activity to report!
He did say it was the warmest frostbite marathon he’s ever ran.
Sending good thoughts Pizzagirl, hoping your stressful situation gets better soon. All of us fall off the wagon from time to time, and we all try to get back there. Know that you aren’t alone :).
Although I am heartbroken about the game last night (Abasket:( ). The silver lining is that nuu muu is having a sale ;). 50% off dragonfly and water lily.
More XC skiing for me. Snow was great on Saturday but it rained Saturday night so we didn’t go Sunday. The good news is more seasonable weather this week so the trail should be back to normal.
Rant of the day: hey people with the big dogs. Yea not everybody loves your unleashed dog. Those of us who come behind you aren’t thrilled when your dog chews up the trail. It’s not just for you, it’s expensive to groom the trail and volunteers do it. Thanks a lot. And yea, you snowshoerers, stay off the groomed trail! I love it when a couple of selfish people ruin the trail for everyone else. (I’m hoping it was the holiday weekend that brought out the worst)
Where were you skiing, Deb?
I know at Honey Creek the trails are for both xcountry and snowshoeing.
Someone really, really good (or intrepid) has been x-country skiing on my private trails (which have huge hills…hence the intrepid).
In my case, I feel the opposite – god love em for making my trudge so much nicer, not having to break trail so much this year
But perhaps they don’t feel likewise to me…then again, I own a portion of the land, so I don’t really care
We went to Big M in Manistee.
They have groomed classic trails. It very clearly states no snowshoes on the groomed trails, they can snowshoe off the trail but not on. No dogs either. The snowshoers knew they weren’t supposed to be on the trail, but played dumb for my H and I as we came on them at separate times.
Usually they will have separate trails, one for classic, another for skate skiing and another for snowshoes. It’s hard to ski after someone has chewed up the trail.
Don’t blame you, if it’s on your own land, fair game ;). Besides when you break your own trail it’s different than when the groomer has been out there.
^for sure
I think there’s a fair number of snowshoers/pet people who break the rules regularly down in these parts too b/c my friend coaches a x-country team and has resorted to creating a practice trail on her own property. Fortunately, she has 50 acres
Down here there are some dedicated, but also quite a few that are dual.
Pizzagirl, I sometimes think back to when I was starting on my fitness/wellness journey. There were stops and starts. For sure! One of the best things I did was to KEEP CHECKING THIS THREAD. Keep reading, keep asking, keep TRYING. Being mindful that others were succeeding AND struggling - that made the experience much more real life and in perspective. Please keep hanging around and checking in - you are needed “on and off the wagon” !!
Nice long pup walk this morning on this rare Monday off of work. Melting over the weekend was wonderful but there is still some black ice and frozen puddles out there on the sidewalks and roads - MAYBE get out later if it warms up enough to melt - which is questionable - if not, I’ll do something else to get this body moving.
Legs are tired today from the 10 yesterday. 2 1/2 easy miles (outside) this morning and trying to get to hot yoga at lunch.
