Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Just a hair under 5 miles this morning. We’re off to warmer climes for about 2 weeks tomorrow morning – assuming we can get out of here before the snow makes a mess of the flights. Looking forward to some more summer-like exercise weather!

No computers on vacation, so I’ll be offline for the duration. Carry on everyone.

Have a great time, CBBBlinker!

Happy trails, CBB!

Hill trudge was just that yesterday…my knee is misbehaving likely because I really haven’t moved the needle much on my holiday gains…which is problematic because in 3 weeks I leave on a cruise. I have to get my eating dialed ack in here.

But I did get a Bluetooth headset and am enjoying hassle free music now. Maybe I should check out Serial now…it might promote longer hikes on weekends

Heading to the gym now for weight training! Thanks for all the support!

Heading out to shovel. 3 inches of very wet slush/snow. Almost the end of January and not 1 decent snowstorm yet so I can use my year old new xcountry skis! Arghh. ~X(

We had snow (well, an inch) and I was so excited to get out and run in it this morning. However, it turned out that all the snow was on the grass and decks, and the roads/sidewalks were icy. It’s melting fast, so I’ll wait a little bit, but no snow run for me. I feel your pain, Michael! I’m usually up in Philadelphia this weekend for an event with high school friends, but the last two years have had big snows and for other logistical reasons I decided not to go this year. I think you can blame me for the somewhat better weather, Michael, since I stayed home.

We had the proverbial “wintry mix” and I was thinking it would be the treadmill today but after walking the dogs realized the roads were fine, so ran 6.2. Exactly. Going to clean out some closets and dressers today. Time to get rid of a lot of stuff that is never, ever going to fit me again.

Fully jealous CBB - enjoy for all of us who can’t!!

Last night I saw a neighbor out running on the practically solid ice roads in our neighborhood. This guy is my age -ish - mid 50s and a casual runner. - I see him running occasionally and usually he circles the same couple of blocks over and over - I cringed watching him risking running in that ice - so not worth it! A couple of inches of snow is one thing - ice is another!

Day off besides pup walks today for me.

Yikes, hope he had spikes on his shoes or some sort of a traction thingy. Breaking a bone is so easy, healing is a major witch (my tailbone agrees with this statement).

Boy, does sun ever make a difference in my mood! I waited until the ice melted on the streets (unfortunately, so did most of the pretty 1 inch of snow on the grass) and went out to run. It felt like Colorado- 34 degrees but bright sun. I even wore sunglasses! It just felt so good and really energized me for a change. I took it easy because tomorrow is my longer run, but for once I actually felt pretty good out there!

I agree, MOWC. I’m planning on getting out there today myself, tired as I am and much though I’d prefer to hibernate.

In the wellness category, I have to figure out how to reboot after yesterday. It did not go well.

I am thinking I need to add a music device to my track runs. I have been reading but i am having trouble telling the difference.

I am sure there is a discussion on this in this thread- but here it goes- ideas on the best running music device such as iPod shuffle, etc for smallness and easy to keep on (ear vs clip) , comfort for the ear, and ones that stay in or on?

Not sure about the “best” but what works for me is to just either carry my iPhone in one hand (I’m used to doing it that way) and playing a Spotify playlist or using an armband to put that phone in and run that way. I ALWAYS run with music - it’s what works for me.

I could use some earbud advice myself. I find that I go through earbuds like crazy. One side always stops working. :frowning: But I have always used nothing expensive - usually earbuds like Skullcandy or something from TJMaxx.

I have decided that SnuggBuds work the best for me. They also have a decent warranty and they’ve replaced mine a couple of times. They stick in your ear. Normally I need ones that hook over your ear, but the SnuggBuds work.

I am not thrilled with my iPod Nano. I forget what Generation it is, but it’s very small (shuffle sized almost) and the very next generation they enlarged it again. It’s really just too small to operate effectively (hard to select songs etc on the screen with your finger). I’m waiting for the next Gen to come out to upgrade. That said, I usually clip it onto my waistband or jogbra and use the wired headphones. I am somewhat interested in bluetooth headphones, but not sure if they work with the stupid Nano. I don’t carry my phone. I think it is a good idea to carry a phone, but I am addicted to my phone and this is sort of the one break I get from it. If I’m more than 3 feet away from it day or night I get anxious. (not proud of this…)

I used to run with music almost 100% of the time unless I was in a different city and wanted to be more aware and be more in tune with the surroundings. Now I often skip the music just to enjoy the quiet and atmosphere. I always use music for my longer runs unless I’m running with someone.

3 mile run today, wore my spikes and went sloooow so no slips. It was snow covered with a few slick spots. It was warmish 33 or so. Felt good. I haven’t been running but the XC skiing must be helping some.

I really like my jawbone Bluetooth headphones. I put my iPhone in my flipbelt and use my bluetooth headphones and it works good for me. Bluetooth headphones have improved and I am so happy with mine. The flipbelt is pretty great also. Sometimes I have wired headphones and the flipbelt works good that way also.

The tomorrow’s forecast calls for sun and 60 degrees! Going to the Beer Trail - woo-hoo!

I’m one of those rare people who have no problem with the earbuds that Apple provides. So I use those. I run with an iPod Nano. I have to run to music – I have playlists with songs I’ve selected that are the right beats-per-minute so I can keep to the right pace. I cannot set a pace by myself – I need to run to music. I have the Nano in a case that has a clip that goes on my waistband.

My recent gift to myself was getting a waterproof iPod shuffle to use when swimming. I used it for the first time this week, and I’m amazed it actually works! The sound isn’t clear and crisp enough to listen to podcasts, but now I can listen to something for the hour of laps.

The weather here is yucky – snow, then rain, then freezing rain/sleet, then snow – the sidewalks and roads are pure slush. My husband shoveled and said he basically shoveled water. So, today became a total rest day.

Guy in my running group has screwed in machine screws to the bottom of his Asics for icy trails. Never uses his Solomon’s any more.

My symaxio Bluetooth headphones set came with three sizes or earbuds. Its held up really well so far out in the bitter cold snowshoeing for anyone interested.
