Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Good morning. Hubby is more or less behaving. Ergo hopefully healing. He’s still in the boot though, and doesn’t go back to the specialist for another week. Specialist told him to expect 4-6 weeks.

The other three couples that we’re cruising with in less than a month were all quite surprised when we turned up Sunday for planning cocktails with him in the boot  He’s still booked for snorkeling (which he insists he can do one-legged) but we’ve cut back on some of the more strenuous shore excursions since we don’t know that he’ll be up for hikes in the rainforest
In one spot, we booked a private jeep so we can go where we want without keeping pace with a herd

For all those who have been suffering from various illnesses or injuries and stressing over breaks in their routines, remember that your road to fitness isn’t a sprint, it’s a journey. There are bound to be ups and downs, times that you are sidelined. The fact that you are worried about getting deconditioned or gaining a few pounds is a great reflection on your commitment, but don’t let it make you nuts! Back off when you need to, give yourself time to recover. Find alternatives if you can that at least keep you moving a bit. Then ease back into your routines as you are feeling better. Don’t beat yourself up for listening to your body.

And for those suffering the frowns of the group fitness class fashionistas, hey, if what you’re wearing is clean, fits comfortably and is functional for the activity, nuts to the naysayers! But just don’t ask my wife about my favorite pair of home workout shorts that used to be almost knee length but are so old and frayed that the legs stop mid thigh and the rest are just dangling threads ;).

C3Baker: As a new runner, I’m still amazed when I run 3 miles. The most I’ve ever run is 7 miles, and that happened once by accident. My typical weekly run is between 4-5.5 miles.

I do walk a lot, though. It’s nothing for me to walk 9+ miles in a day, as much as 6 miles in one outing. I’ve hiked as much as 17 miles in one day and I’ve gotten to the point where any hike under 5 miles is short for me. I forget how unusual that is when I walk with other people, who typically want to stop after 2 or 3 miles.

Cardio + weights for me today. The gym was pretty empty today – not sure why. I was there at my usual time.

Pizzagirl – I’m with you re: capris. I wear them through the heat of summer and the cold of winter. I do have a pair of the CW-X Stabilyx tights (i.e. long) but maybe wear them once or twice during the winter.

Now don’t get me wrong - I’m wearing my shorts but I look neat, clean, AND fashionable!!! haha!!! I DO know people who dress like they are ready to paint the house AT exercise class (looking at you co-workers!) - that’s fine for at home but in public I am comfortable coordinated!

My old track coach used to say that “we aren’t here to look pretty in a track suit”.

My running clothes are dependent on what’s clean! 2 summers ago I purposely wore jean cutoffs and a raggedy tshirt in a track race. Thought it gave me a competitive advantage because I wasn’t taken seriously!

^^^^GREAT strategy!!!

My new Wednesday lunchtime combo checked off the list - spinning class with a jogging warm up and cool down on my own before and after.

The comments about workout clothing remind me of an incident the summer before my sophomore year of colleg e. I visited a young lady whose family lived in Coral Gables. This was back in 1972. We went to a very posh country club and played tennis. I wore cut off dungarees as shorts with a tank top. It was hot on the tennis courts. I took the shirt off. The looks and comments of the society stalwarts on the adjacent courts were priceless. Then we went to dinner in the formal dining room. I wore a suit so all the society patrons were mollified. Of course, they would have been aghast to know that I had forgotten to bring a change of underwear so I was going commando in the suit lol!

Love that, Michael!

Not a great day for me. Only got in 2 miles before a stressful day at work with some less than great eating choices (made by me) and a couple more miles after I got home mainly for mental benefits. Life isn’t particularly easy right now but I am grateful for my health, my ability to have the discipline to run which helps me deal with things, and I’m especially grateful for my job and the nice community in which I live.

That glass half full is what has to carry you through sometimes MOWC - like that you have a checklist of things to be grateful for amidst the other stuff. So what for the bad eating choices today?! You aren’t going to do it everyday. Maybe those calories were a highlight of the day - so be it.

Kettlebell circuit for me. I’m finally getting the hang of the KB snatches smooth enough that the weight doesn’t bang my wrist!

I’ve been hunkered down with a big computer upgrade. You know how that goes…

4.6 miles total today. Dinner was wine and guacamole at a business happy hour.

Wine and guacamole? At least you got your antioxidants and healfhy fats.

My running plans got all messed up this week. :frowning:

Most excellent (chilly) basement workout for me before dinner. All the exercises felt strong, even the single leg deadlifts I’ve been working on. Probably time to bump the weight on the 3-pt rows and DB front squats.

The band I stood in the sweltering mosh pit for this summer is on Austin City Limits Saturday night. Can’t wait. Will be much more comfy on the sofa with headphones and a HD big screen TV!

I just could not do the workout yesterday. I I had to go back to work until after midnight. Practically sprinted out the office today at closing. I did do the 4 miles tonight on the treadmill. I am now officially addicted to Parenthood on netflix.

I ran a little over 5 miles yesterday morning; big dog walk this morning as I couldn’t drag out of bed early enough and I’m finding running three days in a row is just too much. Icky weather ahead for us so will probably be a treadmill weekend for me.

Has anyone run the Wineglass Marathon in Corning? Everything I’ve heard is “flat and fast” but just thinking of that area of the country I’m a little skeptical.

Nice you get to see a taste of summer again iDad!

Lunchtime spinning and a short run. I was tired but had some delicious leftover stir fry and a minature Butterfinger bar to come back to at my desk that motivated me to finish!

More XC skiing today. Saw the most suprising thing on the way to the path. 5 bald eagles on the side of the road. I’m sure there was something dead they were feasting on but I have never seen 5 in one place. It was very cool.

Wineglass is very popular and fills up fast. It is supposed to be fast and flat and a popular Boston qualifier. I haven’t run it.
