Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

So I found this article…

Thanks, abasket. I’ve done it on and off for years, and I liked it because I felt that it had a cardio component and it didn’t involve the kind of jumping between poses that seems to bother my knees. Supposedly your warm muscles help you with the poses. I’m sure that when I started and for many years the rooms were 98 degrees. I don’t know when 105 started to happen. On a good day it feels good and the combination of balance, strength and flexibility is excellent for me. I like the mental component, too. You are supposed to focus and stay “on your mat” and not let your mind wander. Well, I try.

Our local Lulu store is sponsoring a “Vinyasa and Vino” event at a local winery. You get to taste wines after twisting yourself into a knot. I told them that they got the order wrong: it should be vino first, then yoga. I’m trying to convince Mr. B that we need to go!

Well, I bought myself a “hot date” dress at Lulu. Dang.

Which dress, Bunsen? I’m staying out of there this month! Ours has the Vinyasa and Vino, too. Sounds great!

I can’t handle the 105 heat. My classes aren’t that hot.

I was all set to do my run/walk outside yesterday, around my favorite local pond/reservoir – I was all dressed and everything. Then I took the puppy outside and almost did a header on the patio, which was completely ice-glazed. So, I ended up taking a vacation pass.

Just got back from said pond – twice around for 5 miles. With wind chill it was pretty cold – took me almost an entire lap to really feel warm. Beautiful sunny day, though. Next up: wrestling the puppy into the car to go to the groomer.

PS Hot yoga doesn’t sound so fun!

This one, MOfWC:

I like the two pockets (plus the hidden one!) and the idea of it being moisture-wicking (we’ll see).

That hot yoga sounds sort of dangerous as well as no fun.

I just started doing yoga once a week. The room is heated to 94 degrees – hot, but not that hot. I’m glad it’s not any warmer – I feel like this is just enough. The jury is still out on how I feel about doing yoga – I know it’s good for me, but I just don’t like it that much. Good news is that I like the instructor, mainly because she doesn’t care if you fall out of poses or do your own thing, and she doesn’t go around readjusting everyone constantly.

So now that I’ve added yoga, I do yoga, running, and swimming once a week, and in warm weather, biking.

One observation about the yoga – the first few classes I wore shorts, because I couldn’t imagine exercising in 90+ degree temperatures wearing anything but shorts. I was the only woman in the room not wearing yoga pants. The last class I went to, I wore capri tights – and my friend actually commented on it. Now I feel like there is a uniform for yoga – which is ridiculous. I’m torn between wanting to wear shorts in defiance or just giving in and wearing tights like everyone else.

Fireandrain, I am pretty a pretty die hard shorts person for indoor exercise. I notice that most of the people at cycling also are wearing capri tights. I like the freedom of shorts - they aren’t shorty shorts - they are my LLBean sport shorts which are a little longer. I have no shame for what my 55 year old legs look like and they do not seem inhibiting in my exercise.

I’m ok being “you know, that woman who wears shorts”.

Haha! Me, too. I go barelegged to yoga. The others look more stylish, but so what. I have extremely muscular legs, so I probably scare my classmates.

The hot yoga: when I tried it there were many young people and they were much more…naked. My bare legs were scarcely noticed. I wasn’t sure it was so healthy, not for newbies especially. The place I went felt cult-y, like you couldn’t talk or ask for a modification of a movement, you just had to follow the leader. People competed not just in class, but in organized competitions. We joked afterwards the motto was “I want enlightenment and I want it NOW.”

It was okay. Not for me.

Well, if Lulu says these are for yoga… shorts should be fine for yoga!

Big kiddo who does yoga wears similar shorts.

abasket and lizardly, you’ve both made me feel better! Maybe I’ll just mix it up, shorts some days and leggings other days. I probably need to find some lighter weight capri leggings – ooh, an excuse to go shopping! That TJ Maxx thread is tempting me.

I prefer shorts but feel compelled to wear the uniform at times. I like those shorts! Mr. Sabaray thinks I need the reflective ones for running. That’s a little too much shine for my posterior.

Worked out with my trainer today–free weight exercises with battle ropes, stairs, box jumps between sets. Afterwards, I did an hour on the Cybex (elliptical) and tried to do 20 minutes on the Jacob’s Ladder but only made it for 10 minutes.

I think the 105 degree temp comes from
Bikram yoga. It’s also the type of yoga with set poses–no variations. The studio I go to isn’t that hot. It offers vinyasa/flow classes–classes are billed as warm (80-some degrees) or hot (90-some degrees).

I’ve seen a few folks in shorts in my studio. I would wear what is comfortable for you Fireandrain. The instructors in my studio keep saying to us–“it’s your practice.”

I sweat so much that I’d be sliding all over my mat if I had bare legs. One of the benefits of yoga pants is that they are usually made of wicking material, which helps with the sweat.

My studio is baes on the Bikram protocol but offers 60 and 75 minute classes as well as the standard Bikram 90. Attire ranges from shorty shorts and sports bras to capris and tshirts. I wear tight shorts and a sorts bra and sometimes a singlet over it. Lots of lulu at this place.

I like that dress, Bunsen. I’ve been creatively wearing my Nuu Muus to work.

With the weather being somewhat warmer, I’ve been able to do more running. 6.5 miles on Saturday and 8.25 miles yesterday. I am amazed at how many of you talk about running 6-10 miles as if it’s no big deal. It is still a real challenge for me to get through these longer runs. I always feel good afterwards, though.

Pizzagirl-sorry for all the stress in your life. You seem like someone who does a lot for others and it’s unfortunate that you seem to be having a lot dumped on you. I hope you’re able to keep things in perspective if this is a situation that may be ongoing for some time.

Hot yoga sounds just miserable to me. Still trying to talk myself into going to a regular yoga class.

The longer runs are a challenge for me now. They didn’t used to be, but they are now. At the end of 10 I feel like I used to feel at the end of 18. Age? Medication? Just wearing out? Who knows!

I like capris for all exercising - even in the dead of winter!

My place isn’t cult-y at all. It’s very much come as you are, wherever you’re at, if you have to modify a move, so be it. I cannot wrap my arms around one another the way you are supposed to for eagle pose (no physical reason - I just have very muscular shoulders and consequently not a lot of shoulder mobility), so I just give myself a bear hug and carry on in the pose. It’s all good.

KMC:

How’s Hubby’s rehab coming along? Knock on wood, I haven’t rolled my ankle for a couple of years. I don’t know if my ankles are just stronger or if I’m better of getting off my ankle fast if I start to roll it. We have had treacherous icy conditions lately. Not the kind where it just looks icy everywhere, but the kind where it looks NOT ICY anywhere, but is. Gotta really pay attention on the outside stairs.

Squatters:

Goblet squats were the revelation that helped me get comfortable. Something magical about holding a weight up under your chin.
