MOWC, hang in there. I know you must feel frustrated. You’ll figure it out. And in the meantime, it’s not too shabby that your dilemma is that your performance running TEN miles is not up to “par”.
On another note, I’m having an affair with a kitchen appliance. I love my new Nutrition Ninja Blender! Protein and fruit smoothies that are divine.
“These results suggest that in addition to the benefit of reduced time commitment, a high-intensity interval protocol of calisthenics elicits vigorous cardiorespiratory and perceptual responses and may confer physiological adaptations and performance improvements similar to those reported for SIC.”
Idad, glad you got out on the trail. My own hill is a tad crunchy from the wet then low temps.
Weird to hear of these mega storms when we here haven’t had a major one since that crazy week in November, but I am grateful for every week without one given that raking the roof will be down to me right now is kinda perfect because I have enough snow to snowshoe but not much snow on the roof.
MomWC, naive question as I’m not a runner, but what makes for a comfortable long run for you? What’s happening to make it uncomfortable? On my hill treks, which by no means compare, I am more comfortable for example if I’ve hot tubbed first (that’s my lame version of a warmup ;))
Maybe the winter runs are harder without water, or the cold air is making it harder to breathe?
Maybe a hydration pack would slow you down enough to make you comfortable
Hope you work it out and sendin ya the mojo (my mojo is always SLOW
Not a naive question at all, and I guess it’s subjective. The key to the long run (especially at the amateur level) is to put in the distance on your feet and train your body to be able to go that long in an aerobic (as opposed to huffing and puffing) state. Naturally your legs are going to get tired, but the goal is to not feel like you might not make the next mile. I wasn’t quite at that point (although I certainly have been). Also, you want to NOT wear yourself out so much that it hinders your next few days of training. It should be somewhat pleasant- if running 10-20 miles could be considered pleasant. You want to be “jogging”- maybe with some pickups to get your legs a change of pace (pun intended). I just feel like I’m pushing too much- even at slow paces. I shouldn’t feel that way.
Again- it’s NOT about my pace. I am not disappointed in the pace, except that it’s a little too fast (and I’m talking 11:00 here) since it doesn’t feel easy. It doesn’t feel like a 5K, but it doesn’t feel like I could go 3 more miles, either.
MOWC, to slow down slower than that fixed pace, I have a couple of ideas: 1) can you run with someone who runs that pace? Somebody entertaining you will want to stay with? 2) Music at that pace? I guess you might fight it and drift back to your faster pace, but you could try. 3) Take walk breaks or longer potty/ water breaks so that you stay fresher when you run the 11:00 pace your body wants to run.
Getting old is not for sissies. I have been swimming and working with the trainer, sometimes indoor cycling, but have Other Stuff going on that makes consistency tough. I wish I could just get up at the crack of dawn and get 'er done. I can’t always rely on my body to be able to run at that time. I am going to try swimming early. That way I would know I at least got something done every day. Cold and half naked at 6am. It just sounds horrible!
MOfWC, what you describe sounds very suspicious of the hormone’s side effects and not just “aging”. As I mentioned, I read that Forteo can affect muscle energetics (ATP production and all that cool science mambo-jumbo stuff). Normally, a fit person like you would be ok after slowing down. You seem to have trouble with finding that magical pace that would not leave your body tired and fatigued. No matter how much you slow down, your muscles seem to feel tired. Am I interpreting this correctly? If so, I would blame it more on the drug than on aging, since the drug has been linked to myopathy and general muscle weakness (I have to stop by the library to dig up the papers to see what exactly they were talking about).
I really don’t have anyone to run with that is slow enough at this point, unfortunately. My best bet is to go by heart rate or just flat slow myself down.
I could snowshoe beside you and carry a hydration pack like a St. Bernard…that would slow you down for sure :). (If only because you’d be peeing your pants laughing…)
I often see people in our local runner’s club post on FB that they are looking for a running partner in the “this to this” pace range.
Went to a cardio mix class today at lunchtime - mixture of step, weights, and other cardio - felt like it was good for me. I’m kind of enjoying the mix of fitness while I can’t run outside. Still getting in 6-8 miles a week but also three other fitness activities - I’m happy with that.
Burpees. Darn. I shoulda done my burpees! I’m actually bracing for tomorrow’s workouts. With as much snow as we are getting, it’s going to require shovelling throughout the day. It has started. Flurries so far, but it’ll be cranking up.
My grocery store run did not go well. I had my trusty white canvas [LLBean tote bag](http://cdni.llbean.com/is/image/wim/112643_0_47?wid=428&hei=494) over my shoulder. Got to the egg aisle and set it down on the floor while I checked the eggs. Heard a pop and a glass jar of Roasted Corn and Black Bean Salsa had broken in the bottom of my tote bag. What a mess.
It was worse than Christmas in the grocery store. Every checkout lane was a half dozen carts deep in line.
Be safe all you northerners! iDad- that sounds awful. Is your bag ruined?
My return to hot yoga after work went well. So- my love/hate relationship continues. I didn’t get dizzy at all and did pretty well with all the poses. 75 minute class. 2 miles this morning on the dreadmill.
Snow storm is seeming to crap out in the Philadelphia area. Maybe only 4-6 inches. Damn, I had a day of xcountry skiing planned. Now I don’t even know if I can justify closing my office although Philadelphia city government and schools will be closed.
