unfortunately the X-rays revealed that I didn’t break my foot, I have severe arthritis in several bones. Dr suggested fusing the joint but I don’t want surgery except as last resort.
So while I wanted to walk more as training to go hiking with D this summer and less swimming since that was getting expensive (& boring), I am stuck with swimming and deep water aerobics right now.
I’m kinda young for this, & feeling discouraged.
Sending you healing mojo, emerald kitty!
Sabaray, that’s my kind of speed workout
except the “work” part…
Idad, so what’s the real, non-media hyped report on the storm…historic? Either way, stay safe and be careful shoveling!
MNK, you realize of course that the storm goddess is punishing you for embracing winter by buying the skis…happens all the time
EK, so sorry about your foot. That has to be very frustrating.
Waited until it was a bit lighter out and ran 3.2 around the neighborhood. Yep, up and down some streets several times to take advantage of the clearer ones. If my neighbors didn’t think I was nuts before, they do now. My day usually goes better when it starts with a run.
First workout done. 60 minutes of snow shovelling. I managed to clear enough to back the car up one car length and shovel the snow off it so the next plow run can push it away. I measured 24 inches of snow on my deck. A balmy 15 degrees with a breeze.
kmc:
It’s historic for me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much snow at one time. The crazy thing is that it was just a light snow until sometime around 4 am. It’s snowing hard now.
KMC, but that was a year ago!! And to boot, my wife and I are going to Woodloch Lodge Spa in the Poconos on Friday where they have gorgeous trails around a lake. They don’t even have enough snow up there for me to xcountry ski through the woods. I can’t catch a break lol.
My part of MA (35 miles northwest of Boston) is in the thick of the storm–23 inches now and still snowing. Thinking my exercise for the next few days is going to be shoveling snow. Got a generator this year. Sure enough, we didn’t lose power.
My sympathies to you all for all that snow - WAY more than is necessary for cross country skiing! Take care with the shoveling!
Michael, I think instead of the poco is you should swing over to see Idad…I’ve heard he cooks a mean meal and he has plenty of snow for you…
I bought new skis this year, which I am blaming on the lack of good snow here.
Bromfield, everyone in your neighborhood thanks you for buying that generator
Idad, glad the meteorologist was right about the storm for someone, they seem to have gotten it wrong in NYC
Workout #2 done. 75 minutes of snow shovelling. I got the deck and the cellar bulkhead shoved off. 27 inches on the deck. 33 inches behind the BBQ grill. It snowed at least 2 inches while I was out there.
17 degrees. I wore power stretch tights and a single long sleeve baselayer top under rain shell pants and hoody (no insulation). Still sweating.
From Twitter today- “It’s hard to run too easy, but it’s easy to run too hard.”
I can relate to that, MOfWC!
Sorry about that diagnosis, EK.
iDad, that is a lot of snow! Great workout and you’re obviously in good enough shape to withstand all that shoveling. I really worry about people shoveling. Not so much the elderly as I think people look out for them a lot, but the 50-something overweight couch potatoes who haven’t done any exercise in years. Shoveling is hard work, especially if you are out of shape.
Third and final workout of the day. About 45 minutes, clearing another 4 inches off the deck, car. etc. 13 degrees and windy. As they say around here… bittah cold…
I’m the tortoise with shoveling. The key is slow and steady. Going after a snowbank with gusto in a recipe for being bent over panting like a dog, sweating like pig. Those are things that really don’t go well with 13 degree temperatures. I have also learned from hiking to back off on the clothing so that I’m not sweating. This snow was also the picture perfect light fluffy snow. There was a lot of it to shovel, but the shoveling was pretty easy.
I am definitely going to be sore. Whole body sore.
Interested-did this in December. sore but at least different muscles. It was 55 here today.
Congrats on the good shoveling. I haven’t been around that kind of snow in a long time. Well- except skiing in Colorado.

Interesting article on Tom Brady’s dedication to staying fit as he ages. Idad-do you know much about Guerrero and TB12 and his muscular flexibility/pliability routine using bands? Apparently a lot of it is done to reduce stress on tendons/ligaments as they lose elasticity as we age.
Today, the choice was either (i) to drive a mile and pay $30 to park for 3 hrs or (ii) to walk a mile to the building where the meeting took place and then walk back. I chose the free exercise with an additional $30 NPV! Yay me. I even sprinted a block uphill on the way back (if one can call this “sprinting”, LOL).
Bunsen - you are my hero!
