Gawd, we have been socked in with frigid weather. It was 8 degrees with a 25 mph wind on Friday. My workout today was shovelling ANOTHER foot of new snow. That’s about 4 feet of snow in the last week and it’s still snowing. 10 degrees outside.
Tried to do traditional SuperBowl dinner, but Market Basket was sold out of chicken party wings. So, I made Buffalo Chicken Drumsticks instead. Actually, Paul Prudhomme’s embellishment of Buffalo chicken. Yum.

Not so much celebrating as just so happy for Tom Brady to finally get his fourth ring. It has just been an honor and joy to follow his career for the last 15 years.
Nice morning run - a bit over 6 miles; 22 degrees but no wind. I was too warm, as always. One day I’ll figure out how to dress. By then it will be summer.
I got a 30 day free trial of Strava - one of the nice features is you can compare your pace over time on routes. I was pleased to see that my pace is almost a minute faster from my run on January 5th. I’m almost tempted to keep it when the trial is up.
Strava is free, right? My kids and husband use it for their cycling. It looks good, but I’m locked into runningahead.
It was 18 this morning and I think I would have been OK outside, but I just couldn’t face it knowing I had the treadmill in the basement. 4 miles watching the boring morning news, which seemed to be a repeat of last night’s news. I guess boring isn’t a bad thing as far as the news.
The basic version of Strava is free - the “fun” stuff is $6 a month. Definitely more available for cycling than for running. I have it as a backup when Garmin Connect is being wonky. If you log 5 or more workouts they offer you the premium trial.
Ohio, and anyone else interested, this is what I’m talking about when I’m on the soapbox about unregulated supplement sources. Back in Canada, supplements get a DIN# that in theory means they’re subject to periodic inspection for % of stated components.
So if your worried about this (and you should be)

I find these studies sometimes are more amusing than informative, since they are so often based on such a limited sample.
I run and walk on both a treadmill and outside, and couldn’t say which one seems harder. I can challenge myself more on a treadmill, since I can increase the incline and speed easily. But I prefer to be outside.
Today, however, was too cold. So I swam and did weights, inside.
Yesterday was another day of shoveling–10 inches more. There’s no place to put the stuff. Today, I went to the gym where I worked out with my trainer, mostly TRX, free weights, and body weight exercises. I usually walk afterward, but there was too much snow to walk outside, so I got on the treadmill for 30 minutes and then did 20 minutes on the Cybex arc. I signed up for a slow flow yoga class tomorrow–hope the weather cooperates. Most of the classes I take were cancelled because of the snow storm last week and also this weekend.
Report in NYT on supplements was disturbing. I take Vitamin D (recommended by my PCP)–blood work showed I was really deficient. I don’t take any other supplements. I just purchased the brand of Vitamin D that the doctor recommended. Tried to look up brand on the consumer lab link, but it’s $60 to get a subscription.
So sorry for those of you buried in snow. Hope spring comes soon! It’s bad enough for us with the cold temps but at least we aren’t snowed in. We would actually like SOME snow- it’s exciting around here!
Thanks for posting that kcmom. I remember you posting that before and I’m thinking the price may be worth it now. Wondering if consumer labs would have evaluated the supplements mentioned in the article?
“There is some evidence that working out on a completely empty stomach — or, as scientists call this woozy, wee-hours condition, “in a fasted state” — prompts the body to burn more fat and potentially stave off weight gain, compared to exercising at other times.”
So if I exercise before dinner. It would be just as effective! Because I’m starving at that point. In the mornings, I’m not that fasted.
I did a big shovel yesterday. Bitter cold with a wind. I’d say we had a foot. Then, this morning I was out at 8 am shovelling the 6 inches that fell overnight. I think it was 2 degrees.
We have a solid 4 feet of snow on the ground and it’s so darn cold, I can even imagine snowshoeing. Once it’s down in the single digits, it’s just too extreme for me.
I decided I got enough of a snow workout on the hill breaking trail the last few days so hired a guy to do the roof raking. Given my complete lack of grace on a ladder, i figured it was cheaper than having TWO sets of medical bills and risking having another of us unfit to cruise
So he was up there yesterday morning as I was trekking back down the hill and called out from atop the roof ‘wow, that’s one way to wake up in the morning,’ – to which I replied ‘says the man standing on my roof with a shovel’
Idad, the great thing about the brevity of my snowshoe treks is that even at subzero temps, you can hack it if you’re only talking half an hour I’ve honestly never skipped because of temperature, and when I’m done, I’m always glad I did it.
