Despite a late night last night (basketball game) I managed to get myself out the door for an outside 4 mile run. It was 30 degrees but no wind. Felt good to get outside.
Wednesday spinning class followed by a visit to the Marmot site to purchase a pair of 3/4 capri tights. I could slap myself - 6pm had the exact same tights for $26.99 but I waited too long and they didn’t have my size. So ordered them from Marmot for $35 - somehow I got free shipping so that wasn’t too awful!
In case anyone is looking for new 3/4 tights and can wear an extra small or small, here’s a good deal:

Slow flow yoga today–signed up for indoor cycle class tomorrow.
KB circuit for me. Instead of set of squats and a set of push presses, I combined them. Deep squat up into an overhead press.
I think it makes for a better circuit, but the squat into press is a really taxing exercise. Panting like a dog.
IDad, that is a tough combination. I was doing burpees/push up/shoulder press combos with dumbells and very quickly began to hate myself. I tried cutting it back to burpees/shoulder press and I still hated myself lol.
Would you happen to have any “hands on” experience with some lightweight long workout pants without an elasticized waist that just have a draw string? I detest the feeling of an elasticized waist when I’m working out and it’s really tough to evaluate potential products from online photos. Can’t find the “no elastic” pants at any local stores.
Have been doing strength/weight training since recovering from an accident a year ago. January 1 I added cardio after talking with someone at the gym who lost quite a lot of weight. The regimen was simple: the treadmill or elliptical until the heart rate monitor measured 3500 calories each week. I should have lost up to 4 pounds - right? Weighed today for the first time and I gained 2 pounds!! Will I always carry this extra 10-15 lbs?
Cold blustery morning - it was 33 when I started my run and it was 28 when I finished an hour later - lots of wind! Glad to just get outdoors for 6.3. I had Pilates yesterday and my back is a little sore - we did a lot of work on the obliques and I have a hard time getting turned just right. I am ready for this week to be over!
@Ksm, when you say 3500 calories each week do you mean in a combination of workouts??? What is your nutritional intake on a daily basis - type of food and calories consumed???
abasket, I would stay on the treadmill until my heart rate monitor registered 700 calories, the next day on the elliptical for 700 calories, then back to the treadmill, etc. x5days =3500 calories spent. Listened to a couple of great books, but no weight loss!
Clearly you have nailed it with the nutritional intake. I did not think I had done anything different food wise, but must have eaten more. We do not keep much junk food in the house. I will need to try one of the popular food apps. If I must list what I eat, I may not eat it
Climbed out on the lower roof last night and shoveled off the accumulated 2’+ of snow, which was hard and heavy. I wanted to get it before it all freezes rock-hard (forecasted low tonight is -5) and before another foot+ gets added on the top over the next week. Had to chip off the ice damn on the upper roof as well. It turned into quite the workout.
Getting another 3" today… is it ever going to stop?
I feel your pain Notrichenough–I just missed my indoor cycle class because I didn’t realize it had snowed last night and it took me a long time to get the car cleaned off. I didn’t put it in the garage. Dumb.
t can’t believe we’re getting more snow this weekend. There’s no place to put it!!! I’m going to go to the gym now and do some cardio on the elliptical.
You can do it ksm!
The calorie counters on the gym equipment are notoriously unreliable. I guess you could use them to measure intensity and compare between times you use that same piece of equipment. When I use a gym treadmill or elliptical or bike, I don’t look at the calorie count, but do look at the elapsed time and the intensity.
For weight control, counting calories in is a must. As you have seen, you might have been eating a little more and wiped out your potential losses. You have to be sure your input is really the same.
Good luck! You are on the right track.
Lizardly, thanks for your support! I use my personal heart rate monitor for accurate calorie count. I have noticed a difference in readings on the various pieces of gym equipment.
I do wonder what percentage of weight loss is exercise versus calorie intake. Is this known?
I meet with my trainer in 2 hours. I plan to shift our focus from strength to weight loss
Abasket, do you use bicycle shorts? I resisted them for some time due to vanity! Extra padding where I had my own. But I really like them and most of the spin people wear them. One thing I do not own that others wear is shoes with toe clips
I like bike shorts for spinning. That seat is HARD.
Unless you are working out like crazy, most of your weight loss will come from calorie restriction. For example, if you were running three miles a day, a good amount of running for a new exerciser, you would be burning about 300 calories a day from that wonderful activity. If all else stayed the same, like you didn’t eat a little more dinner, you would burn an extra 2100 calories a week----not even a pound worth. You could keep on that way and lose weight slowly (nothing wrong with that!), but it might be too frustratingly slow.
Combine the exercise with a small calorie reduction, and the weight loss will be more gratifyingly quick. (You don’t want want too quick. You want a maintainable plan and one that won’t leave you exhausted from having too little fuel.)
There are circumstances in which exercise is the main component of weight loss. When I was younger and less beat up, I could run 2x a day and swim, just burn a crazy number of calories. But that was a lot of exercise, and I had to be careful to take in enough calories to bounce back the next day.
The exercise is important, don’t get me wrong. It will make you healthier and look and feel better. Even if you weren’t trying to lose weight, you should be doing it. I hope over time you start doing it because you like it and you like the way it makes you feel, regardless of whether it causes you to lose any weight.
I spin with a woman who never exercised until she hit her late fifties. She was a good thirty pounds overweight and losing weight was her primary goal. From exercising and restricting calories she lost about ten pounds pretty quickly. Then she stalled on the weight loss. But she became a beast on the exercise----she found she really really liked it. Her clothes fit better, she made new friends, she felt better. She stopped worrying so much about the weight. After a period of being stuck, she has started slowly losing weight again, so she has maybe ten pounds to go.
^^^^ That last paragraph - BINGO. That is a great story and points out that once your mental attitude/outlook changes you won’t be just looking for results on the number on the scale but you will notice it in other ways.
@ksm, I have not invested in bike shorts. My primary activity is running and I’m just spinning once or sometimes twice a week in the winter because I can’t run outside and I get tired of the indoor track and treadmill. I do wear shorts but do far I am not feeling the need for the extra padding. Most people in the classes I’ve been in are wearing capri tights. Some wear shorts like me. I also often do a little running before my spin class and after so prefer the lightness and freedom of my running shorts (which are not shorty shorts!)
Wholeheartedly recommend one of the food tracker apps. MyFitnessPal is a popular one. Some people like Fooducate. I started years ago on MyPlate. Don’t track much anymore because overtime I have found the balance in my food intake - AFTER many months of tracking! It’s very educational.
I often see friends post on Facebook things like “woohoo! Just spent 40 mins on the elliptical and burned 600 calories!” No, that did not just happen. I can run 3 miles and only burn 300ish calories. You my FB friend are sadly misled!!!
Ksm, glad that you are on ghe mend. I guess you can wear regular athletic shorts over padded bike “jammers” if you do not like the padded butt look! I agree with others is that calorie tracking is important for keeping weight in check. Sugary and carby things are the main culprits, so look where you can cut out those.
My Launch 2 were shipped on Monday, and I got them yesterday! I’m hoping to take them for a spin today. I ordered the “ombré” ones with the light green color transitioning into purple. They look really cool.
The calorie calculator on the elliptical at rehab tells me that I’ve burned ~120 calories after 40 minutes, and that’s at level 4 with hills. I burn more calories walking on the dreadmill at 3.2 and 3% incline. I’m sure most of y’all burn more than I do, but 600 would seem a bit wishful!
