Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Hi everyone! Back from sunny. warm FL – which already feels like a distant memory. And warm is a relative term since several mornings it was 46 degrees when I was out running or walking. BUT, all in all an excellent break from the weather here in New England. D and her bf did yeoman duty here at our condo taking care of the puppy, digging out H’s car on the street, etc. And, in the “Good News” department, I actually lost 1 lb. while we were away – which is a major accomplishment since H’s mindset while on vacation is “anything goes” re: eating and drinking. He actually tends to get cranky if I don’t go along with this mindset – most likely he’s trying to justify what he’s doing, but it usually means I can’t help but gain a few pounds.

Trying to skim through all the posts since I left, so forgive my now late comments. Re: devices & earbuds – I hardly ever carry my phone w/ me when running/walking outside, especially now that I have an iPhone 6. It’s just too big. (There are times, though, that I think I should be carrying it for safety reasons …) I use a 2nd generation iPod Touch for music, which I carry in a neoprene waist belt. I can’t stand anything strapped to my arm. I’ve gone through quite a few headphone/earbud models trying to get it right. For a long time I was using Sony over-the-ear ones with ear clips. They stayed in place and sound quality was decent, but I felt like I had to turn the volume up pretty high to hear anything, due to to sound “escaping.” Regular earbuds fall out as soon as I start sweating. I tried Yurbuds, which are advertised as guaranteed to stay in place. They didn’t. The company traded mine out for a women’s model; they still fall out. I was going to get SnuggBuds, based on MOWC’s recommendation, but the online reviews were so-so. I finally went to a local “sound” store here and the manager recommended these by Sennhesiser: http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-CX-685-Adidas-Headphones/dp/B0094R4POC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1423313670&sr=8-4&keywords=sennheiser+ocx+685i+sports They’re not perfect, but I didn’t want to spend a fortune, either. Initially I was going to take them back since the sound quality was awful – very tinny. Then I figured out I could adjust the sound on the iPod itself, and that works. I don’t need concert hall sound quality, just decent. Most importantly, the earbuds have never fallen out, no matter how much I sweat. I only listen to music when running/walking outside, so never mess with the controls, etc. I listened to the Serial podcast on the treadmill, and may now look for others – exercising inside is way more boring.

Yesterday was “catch up” day – laundry, grocery shopping, etc. Since we’re due for another major snow “event” starting tonight, I did my stocking up before the stores (and parking lots) get absolutely crazy. I have ingredients for a stew and a tasty fish chowder lined up. And we have several programs to catch up on, so we’re as ready as we can be.

Happy weekend all!

Sounds like a great trip, CBB. More snow, not so much!

blankmind, good luck with the training. You’ve got plenty of time and it will get easier when the weather improves!

Got out early this morning and did 9.7 with my group. Much needed. Felt terrible, I was very, very slow today. Not sleeping well and having some terrible GI problems. The next run will be better.

Got out and did 3 miles this morning, kind of surprised that I could do it non stop!

sabaray, being in S.CA, I can’t blame weather for not getting out there, but I did wish I had worn my gloves this morning. Hope you feel better on the next run.

Today is cross day and am going to do a lot of weed cutting. Hope that counts. MOWC, ordered the earbuds today, should get here for next weekends run, H and I will give them a try.

Sabaray, hope you get your insides settled down!

Welcome back CBB! 1 pound after vacation is not too shabby!

Celebrating the fact that I got to run outside this morning. Now I did have to drive 2 1/2 hours from home to do it! Spent the night at my daughters in Columbus , D2 had a scholarship day at a college here . I ran in the roads in the neighborhood which were dry and clear - totally different from home where people are still getting stuck in the roads due to so much snow!! Small wins. I’ll take it!

6 mile run in Monteagle towards Sewanee. It was a gorgeous 35 degree morning. My friend told me to set the pace. She’s younger and faster. Of course, I went too fast, but it was still nice. There’s a new paved trail which we were able to pick up after 1.8 miles called the Mountain Goat trail. The part we were on is not officially opened, but…

Now, they’ve increased the predicted snow. 12 to 16 inches staring around midnight tonight and continuing for 48 hours. Looks like plenty of opportunity for shovelling workouts!

Another foot or more?! I feel your pain!

iDad, double “ugh!” for you!!!

At least it was warm today. Mid 20s.

It is really tricking driving. The snow banks are so tall that you can’t see at all pulling out of any parking lot or intersection.

Come South, iDad! It sounds awful.

The forecast is now 20-24 inches in Boston. I’m in the 14-20 band. Ugh…

Endless winter is upon us.

Yeah. They upped our projected to as much as 18 inches now.

OMG. Send some over here, it will melt into rain!

We’re in the area on the weather maps (metro Boston) that are labeled “Jackpot Potential” or something like that. You know that can’t be good … If we didn’t have a dog we’d probably just hole up inside until it all stopped on Tuesday.

^^^^ Sorry – should be “area on the weather maps that is labeled …”

Just shoveled the front walkway–there’s another 3-4 inches on top of the 30-something that’s already here. More tomorrow and the next day!! I’m sick of snow.

:frowning: The groundhog says 6 more weeks - hang on folks!!!

Like nuts? As in peanuts, almonds, pistachios…???

You may already have a good handle on this, but here’s a nice visual look at “100 calories” of various types of nuts.

I may have asked this before…has anyone ever ordered from Skirt Sports before??? Thoughts??? I’m eyeing up a couple of things on 6pm that are great deals - IF the product isn’t bad!!
