Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Took my kleenex and runny nose downstairs to the dreadmill for 1-2 miles and wound up doing 5.3. It was going OK and I watched the news with all the ice pictures and highway crashes. The whole city is pretty much locked down with solid ice. SO glad I have that treadmill. Kept HR low so I don’t think I set my recovery back.

DH and I were going to the rec center to walk when we learned it was closed due to snow. So we shoveled our driveway instead. It’s still snowing so I figure we’ll shovel again this evening. And I did my dumbbell exercises.

Wow, this has been the craziest winter! I feel so bad for iDad and all the rest in the Northeast who keep getting pounded relentlessly with snow. I don’t know how the couch potatoes or the elderly are able to keep up with it. Shoveling is a real workout and to have to do it continuously must be terrible for those who are out of shape.

BB-your knee injury sounds just AWFUL! Is the oven fixed yet?

MOWC-kudos on your Hot Chocolate 15K run. Glad you are able to stay inside, warm and safe today.

Abasket-I can relate to what you are saying about finally saying you are a runner. It took a long time for me to feel that I was a legitimate runner, as opposed to somebody who did the C25K program and runs an occasional race. Part of what got me over that hurdle was that other people - friends and family members - would refer to me as a runner and that made an impact on my mindset.

I had a long conversation with a co-worker today about Fitbits, running, eating, exercise in general. She is someone I have worked with for over 20 years and I have always thought of her as being very fit and lean. The pounds have crept on over the years, although I never noticed it until she pointed it out today - she dresses very fashionably and is very pretty so I never thought of her as being overweight. Her cholesterol numbers have gotten really high so she is determined to get things under control. It was funny, she was saying that in her 20s, she weighed in the 120s. In her 30s, she was in the 130s. In her 40s, she was in the 140s…and she can’t continue the trend! I’m sure she’ll be successful, she seems very determined.

Lower body workout tonight at the gym with my trainer. On Saturday we’re doing the Polar Bear run. They have a 5K and a 5 mile race. We signed up for the “Doubler” which will have us doing both. I hope it’s not too cold and windy.

Pilates reformer this morning–doing a make-up session because of the snow. This was an intermediate class and I managed to keep up. Only thing that got me very nervous was doing a move that was basically downward facing dog with my feet on the bar of the reformer. I was sure I’d fall off.

This was my day for make-up classes. After the reformer make-up, I went to a hour flow yoga session–which was also a class that had been reschedule because of snowstorms.

H and I shoveled decks yesterday when the snow stopped. We’ve had something like 90 inches in the last three weeks. I’m trying to figure out how to go someplace warm. My H has a business trip in Miami next week–I may stow away in his luggage.

Congrats on your Hot Chocolate race, MOWC. BB–sending healing mojo for your knee.

I vote for the luggage stowaway Bromfield!

Thanks, all! The longer my knee heals… the fancier will be the oven in my kitchen. Still abstaining from running… The weather looks awesome. Sigh.

"It was funny, she was saying that in her 20s, she weighed in the 120s. In her 30s, she was in the 130s. In her 40s, she was in the 140s…and she can’t continue the trend! "

C3Baker, that was me! Except my bloodwork was all normal. The weight gain trend accelerated - I was not even 50 yet when I hit 152 lb. That was the turning point. Tell your coworker that it can be done.

I’m gonna hazard a guess that ambling the ship’s track while eating soft-serve ice cream doesn’t count for my mile today…but I did get a reasonable kayak workout snorkeling in Roatan today
Since I’m usually the one reading reports of better weather, 'Nuff said but I am sending y’all the warm weather mojo.

The thing is- I think we get lulled into thinking that sort of “weight creep” is normal- and in a way it IS if you don’t really do something to reverse it!

I have 2 Florida trips in my future- but they aren’t soon enough! March 20ish and April 23rd. I do have California in a couple of weeks- thank God.

Well, it was a nice sunny day here, but just stupid cold outside. Too cold for snowshoeing. Basement thermometer says 44 degrees. I could run the little space heater for hours and not get it up to 50. So, I scoured the cushions on the sofa and the back of my sock drawer and the bottom shelf of the fridge and couldn’t come up with a good reason not to hop on the Dreaded Airdyne. So, I climbed on and did a solid five miles, informally alternating between 40-50 rpm and 50-60 rpm. Nothing too brutal, but a nice little workout. Got my heart rate up. Breathing hard. A little sweaty.

Garmin has no prayer in this weather. Even with my industrial size humidifier, it’s 28% relative humidity in here. Touch the Garmin or the TV remote and they go “snap” before resetting! Not conducive to good heart rate monitor readings.

I had a surprise bone density scan today. I went for my well woman check up and they had an opening at the scanning place, which is in the same building so they sent me over. I am already feeling pressure to go on the bone drugs, even before the results come back. I’m hoping it comes back with no worse a result than last time. I don’t know how I feel about taking the drugs.

XC skiing for an hour today. 8 degrees, which is a warm up from the weekend. Yesterday we set records for low high temperatures. I did nothing over the weekend and ate too much. The snow is good though, so that’s a plus.

My phone and my garmin die in these temperatures but you get out there and it’s peaceful. Cold, white squeaky snow, so fine and dry.

Sharing another article worth sharing with my fellow runners:

My knee looks so much better! I’m ready for the hill climb tomorrow!

Glad your knee is on the mend, BB!

I’ve really been struggling with my eating again. I’m one of those stress eaters, as I’ve undoubtedly told you all one hundred and one million times and I am stressed. Normally I would run but the weather doesn’t allow that - wish MOWC was my neighbor so I could head on over and use her treadmill.

Fair amount of snow - it’s 15 degrees right now. Hopefully the center will open up later today so I can get a workout in. Don’t know if I’m going in to the office today or not.

I hear you sabaray. I’m in the same boat. I need to up my protein and cut carbs considerably but when I get stressed, I carb out.

Still at the beach. We were due to be back in Cambridge tonight to meet friends from north of Boston for dinner but they’re both recovering from the flu (no way I want to chance catching that!) and it’s snowing again. So now it looks like we’ll head back tomorrow. I took the puppy for a walk yesterday – it was a brilliant sunny, blue-sky day but wicked cold!

Sabaray- you would be welcome on my treadmill! We are truly in a state of emergency here. Roads are a sheet of ice everywhere with several fatalities. Everything is closed and the mayor has begged everyone to stay home. I can barely walk down the driveway (flat) to get the paper. Working from home again, which is good for getting over this cold.

And…I think I picked up MOWC’s cold! Actually I’ve dodged a round of colds that have been in the house for the past three months but don’t think I’ve dodged this one. Started some echinacea at first sign and have the 12 hour decongestant going. Apple cider vinegar to gargle and hot fluids going down. Ok, this morning, also 1/2 of a paczki with those hot fluids - apricot so at least it’s fruit based.

Another month everyone and we should be out of these winter doldrums for the most part and back on track with motivation for better eating/exercising, etc.

“When people see themselves as exercisers, they are more confident to manage their exercise — to overcome barriers, schedule, and plan — which in turn is related to their success in being active.”

So do your best to remove or substitute those barriers (even food related) and carry on!!

Sorry, abasket! Colds are so annoying. I sound like a barking dog!

I made a great hot toddy the other night with Jack Daniel’s Fire (cinnamon whiskey), lemon, honey and hot water. It’s very medicinal.

Hmmm – I don’t know about where you are, abasket, but where idad and I are it will be winter, with lots of snow on the ground, for a v-e-r-y long time. Who knows – they might be running the Boston Marathon in the snow!!

Winter is rough. Well, it is for anyone on the eastern side of the country this year. It’s hard to do anything with this intense cold and/or snow.

I just weighed myself on a fancy scale at the hotel I’m staying at, and it says I’m 2 pounds over my “danger – it’s time to start dieting” weight and 5 pounds over my preferred weight. Grr. Back to counting calories. The strange thing is that the last time I was 5 pounds over I really noticed it – my clothes were noticeably tighter, and I had to go up a size. This time, I’m not having that issue. So, either this fancy scale is wrong, I’ve gained it in different places, or I’m delusional. Let’s hope for the first option.

I did run on the hotel gym treadmill, a nice 6.2 miles in an hour. And now off to meet a friend for lunch.
