Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Interesting story:

[Euro Tour golfer Lawrie blames soda addiction for rapid game decline](Euro Tour golfer Lawrie blames soda addiction for rapid game decline)

There’s a twist though - his game went down the drain when he quit drinking soda in an effort to get healthier.

He’s started drinking soda again (although much less than before) and his game is improving again.

The exception to the rule, I guess…

Placebo effect is well documented…

Pizzagirl – the CW-X Stabilyx capris have a drawstring waist. CW-X makes several different “models” of capris; not sure if they all have a drawstring. (I wear the Stabilyx for running because of the built-in knee support.)

Snowing, blowing, and cold here at the beach. Yesterday we went to a local distillery and did a whiskey tasting – that warmed us up pretty fast! Today I’m thinking a pot of chili and a roaring fire.

Nice race MOWC. I hear you about the dread before the race. I’ve even tried a sports psychologist lately for some help. But the euphoria after makes it worth it. I’ve read recently that marijana is used by some of the ultra runners now. Worried that it would slow me down. Not that I’ve ever inhaled before!

Thanks, all. My legs are really tired today, and I have my first cold in over 2 years. I hope I can get rid of it quickly, but my history is that it goes to bronchitis. We are expecting a blizzard (which for here means 4-6 inches of snow) which might have some sleet and ice. Wind chill right now is 3 degrees, so I’ll be staying inside most of today anyway. Will do a couple “streak” miles on the dreadmill once a game or something interesting to watch comes on.

The day inside will do you good MOWC! Relax and recoup.

The wind is blowing so hard here that the snow blew in under my garage door and I now have a snow drift inside my garage. Not enough snow for any snow based outdoor activities but a snow drift in my garage. This weather is ridiculous lol.

Pizzagirl, it looks like all roads do lead to running tights and capris. I highly recommend talking to sales folks working at Lulu. They are very knowledgeable about what works for which activity and will never upsell. I had no idea what to get for the kiddo who was into hot yoga, so followed the SA’s advice, and the kiddo was thrilled!

MOfWC, hope that your cold will be short-lived. My bug seems to be gone in less than 2 days… a big win for me. And the gash on the knee does not look too bad. I guess bandaging it tightly and applying ice intermittently for an hour worked. I will be able to run next week!

Last night I was at a party and danced wildly with the youngsters. Today I am a little sore in muscles I didn’t know I had. :frowning: Guess I’m not doing quite enough stretching/exercising!

Keep warm, everyone, and party like it’s Mardi Gras…it’s good exercise!

Dancing will do this to you!

I am trying hard to bend my injured knee as little as possible, so I’ve been doing a lot of one leg squats around the house! A simple activity such as litterbox cleanup can become a real challenge if you try to do it without bending one leg!

BB, doesn’t everyone do 1 legged deadlifts to change letterboxes?

Snow, you need snow? Have I got a deal for you. We got 16 more inches overnight. I was out at 9:30 this morning shovelling out cars and decks what have you. It is really insane.

Oh, and did I mention cold? Yikes. Right now, it is -5 degrees with a 20 mph wind.

Which reminds me, I better go get the pot roast leftovers I had cooling off the deck! Made a big pot roast for dinner and the freezer. Seemed like pot roast weather!

LOL, MNK!

Posting this here - very good advice, IMO:

Oh idad, your weather sounds awful!

MoWC, I hope a day inside helps you avoid bronchitis.

Bunsen, yikes about your knee! I may have to try some of those single leg litter scooping exercises today.

Armaggedon is headed our way - something like a foot of snow! It’s warmed up to a balmy 11 degrees this morning. Needless to say no run group this morning. Saw one of my running partners at the store yesterday (along with everyone else in town) - looks like weights and core work will be on the agenda this week. Our center usually closes in bad weather so no treadmill even.

Good article, Bunsen. I agree. I certainly “identify” as a runner.

We have solid ice on every outdoor surface, so no leaving the house today. It is treacherous and still coming down. That will help me with this cold, although I planned to stay home and work from home anyway. I’m not one of these people who needs to spread germs around the office.

Did 2 1/2 miles on the dreadmill yesterday and will do a little today- nothing long or fast.

Great article Bunsen. I always thought there was a big difference between jogger and runner. Never call yourself a jogger if you want to get faster.

So I went back and read BB’s article too. Wow, I really agree this is so true!

My favorite quote - I want to put it on a permanent sign and lift it up to so many people who say they want/need/should start an exercise routine/eat better/go to the gym/walk regularly/whatever!!!

“When people see themselves as exercisers, they are more confident to manage their exercise — to overcome barriers, schedule, and plan — which in turn is related to their success in being active.”

BINGO. To overcome the barriers, schedule and plan. It’s your barriers, your schedule, your plan. Own it and own up to it.

When I first started running and completed the C25K it was awhile before I could let the words “I run” or “I’m a runner” out of my mouth. I only felt “qualified” to say “I’m learning to run” “I try to run” “I jog” - stuff like that. Finally one day I realized that I own the title too - on my own terms. I may not run 5 miles regularly or 10 miles EVER - but dang it, I have kept pretty darn religious to 3-4 runs a week that make me sweat, get me moving, have improved slightly in pace over time, and have my body feeling stretched/weary/worked out and STRONG. With all that in place and becoming part of my being, I AM A RUNNER.

Among other things of course.

^^^^ And…living that dream, gym time today, track/treadmill/rowing!!!

I’m switching to a 5k training plan, so just a 20 minute run this morning.
