Addition - I want synthetic / breathable, not heavy cotton. Please
Great race results MOWC! And happy birthday to your H!
No running for me this coming week.
I am so pissed… My knees are already so ugly, and now I will have a huge scar from the freshly ripped skin
Mr B wants me to get stitches. I’m not so sure. Two hours in the ER is not what I want to do right now. Plus I am coming down with some bug… Do not want to go where sick people congregate! ![]()
Pizzagirl, some of Lulu running capris come with waist drawstring ties. I bet they can be used for yoga!
Pizzagirl, I know you mentioned no cotton… but please take a look at these pants:
BB, what happened?
Thanks! Will check them out!
Pure stupidity! I was running around the kitchen making lunch and ran into the sharp piece of metal protruding out of the oven which Mr pulled out of the wall. The whole damn thing started to fall and ripped the skin on my leg!!! Glad I like wearing hose. It looks like I will have to hose up this summer. It certainly hurts, but I think the knee cap is ok.
Ouch, ouch, ouch! That truly sounds painful. Is it deep enough that stitches would even be a help?
PG, are the yoga pants you are wearing tight enough around the waist??? Or would some higher waisted ones help ?
Ouch. That sounds incredibly painful. I’m sure your tetanus is up to date?
I am so envious of all you exercise experts who can run, do yoga, hiking, other great exercises, and I can only walk on the treadmill daily for 30 minutes at the snail speed of about 30-32 mph, sigh! I am prone to injury every time when I “try” to “exercise” in the past, so I just walk and have been walking for over a year. I do plan to do beginner yoga once my shoulder pain is gone (have frozen shoulder).
Question is: is it better to walk outdoor than on treadmill as far as impact on the knees? I am thinking of walking outdoor once the weather gets warmer and NO more snow!! Thanks.
Trying to spare you of the gory details because it is not pretty! It is a long gash, and there is a spot where the skin is ripped to the meat. Gross.
Hopeful, we all started somewhere! And some of us started NOT as a young, fit person!!! If you are on the treadmill (otherwise sometimes known as the “dreadmill”) DAILY that is wonderful!
I would say that walking indoors vs. outdoors might depend on a couple of things. Your local terrain - flat? Hilly? What type of ground - pavement? Nature trail?? The most important thing will be GOOD - we mean GOOD, fitted by an exercise professional - walking shoe. Shoes need to be changed out often - even if they still look good! Parts of the shoe you cannot see (the cushioning between the inside sole and the sole itself) wear/break down.
For me, I am SO much happier when I can be outside - it makes exercise more interesting, the fresh air is an added health benefit, and time goes so much more quickly.
If you are worried about tripping or something, maybe choose a paved path in a local park or something - as opposed to neighborhood sidewalks that are not even or a trail that might have bumps and lumps.
Let us know how you’re doing!!!
What abasket said! Treadmills are supposed to be easier on the knees than pavement. That said, not all pavement surfaces are created equal. The best is grass and dirt, and the worst is cement.
@abasket, the pathway by the main street is no good, pavement not even, but the streets inside development are ok, I was just thinking if walking on the street will put less stress on the knees over the long run.
One drawback on walking outside is my allergies, with flowers blooming in spring and ragweed in the fall, so I have to weigh between impact on knees and allergies, lol,
Walking on treadmill is boring, but with my favorite songs going, it is bearable, maybe I should hook up a TV, that may even be better!
Bunsen- that sounds awful! So sorry that happened. You should probably get it looked at.
Pizzagirl- surely some of the higher waisted Lulu capris would stay up. Go try some on and do some poses in the dressing room.
Thanks, all. My times aren’t great, but the effort is there. This was a pretty big race. Over 3300 runners in the 15K.
Hopeful, if you can hook up a TV, that would make a world of difference! Another alternative is watching shows on a tablet, if you have one (this is what D does when she comes home).
BB: Ouch. That hurts just reading about it!
HOPEFUL: Walking is great exercise! Whether you do it indoors or out, you are way ahead of most of us “middle age” folk! I find that walking outdoors is wonderful, both physically and mentally. Love going out with my iPod on a nice sunny day and getting some fresh air with my exercise. I’ve been lucky in finding some little state and local parks with gravel trails overlooking gorgeous rivers and lakes. That’s really a wonderful way to spend an hour…
Just back in from the first shovel of this blizzard. About six inches of snow off the deck off the car and around the car. It’s not much, but at least it’s a start. It is snowing hard and suppose to really pile up towards dawn. I am concerned about the predicted 55 mph wind gusts. A power failure is NOT what I need…
“Pizzagirl- surely some of the higher waisted Lulu capris would stay up. Go try some on and do some poses in the dressing room.”
I second this! The nice thing about Lulu fabrics is that if you wash it per their instructions, they are not going to stretch out. I’m wearing my most awesomest Lulu Wunder Under crops as we speak to keep my knee skin from peeling apart.
“Thanks, all. My times aren’t great, but the effort is there.”
MOfWC - you did GREAT!
I have a TV (no cable) bought a roku stick and watch a series on netflix with the treadmill. time seems to go so fast that I have to pay attention that I am on a treadmill.
went hiking at the Arches NP today in the back country- there was a zillion people there today but not in the back parts. so fun. incredibly pleasant weather for February (60’s) and sunny. storm front coming in tomorrow. my pedometer only said 6700 steps ( supposed to be a cross 60 minute day in training) but overall took hours of climbing up and down rocky hills. I’m calling that good for now. tomorrow is the 9 mile run hopefully on a dirt track. we have been using the treadmill or dirt track most days to save on the feet and knee issues. the half race is actually on pavement so that will be interesting in 3 weeks.
As I read the others in the thread I am truly impressed by the persistence and encouragement everyone gets. great thread.
