Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Lovely sunny day here, before it turns bitter cold for the coming week. Time for a good walk.

And I figured out how to have a reasonably healthy snack at the Rhino Frozen Yogurt place. A little bit of nf peach yogurt, topped with real fresh strawberries and pecans. Delicious!

I have a neighbor who complains about the walkers and runners in our neighborhood. She complains about them walking in the middle of the road and how dangerous it is, among others things. She is overweight, has COPD and can barely walk from her car into her house.

It’s very sad actually and she lives a life that is my nightmare. I never want my life to become that small. (Oh, I see her husband walking in the neighborhood).

I’m on that donut train with you Abasket

Sadly I think it’s going to be too cold for any skiing this weekend. Winter storm warnings with dangerous wind chills around -30. I guess I will be nesting and running on the treadmill. If I get bored enough maybe I can get motivated to clean the basement.

Last weekend when I was on my church women’s retreat one of the women started b@tching at lunch about the runners who run along one of the popular roads in our town and how they should only run on tracks or in the (small) nearby park. I just said that runners should always face traffic, not run 3 abreast and wear bright clothing. I tried to be nice…

Have fun at your Hot Chocolate race MOWC. And if I may suggest, bring a couple of shots of chocolate tequila to add to the hot chocolate at the end. A perfect post event nutrition plan ;).

The comments about runners in the road struck a chord with me. Last summer, I had ridden from my house to Doylestown Pa. About 50 miles round trip. As I left Doylestown, my route crossed the Route 202 by pass trail. At a traffic light, a driver scolded me for not riding on the trail and informed me that bicycles should not be on the road. I responded that following her advice would be difficult since the trail runs north-south and I needed to go east to get home. She became very confused and pulled away in a huff when the light changed.

I walk 2 miles on our city streets daily. The disrespectful drivers not checking for pedestrians legally crossing city streets… how to say it mildly… get on my nerves! Sometimes, I feel like doing the same thing as that grandma did in the old viral video!

Have fun at your run, MOfWC! The tequila suggestion is a good one

Michael- that’s great about the driver going off in a huff. I like the chocolate tequila idea!

I think my son and soon-to-be pro triathlete girlfriend may be buying a place in the Poconos. You can go up and train with him!

My perspective: there should be a law against laws banning yoga pants… I like yoga pants.

From the Nutrition or Hemlines? category in today’s Wash Post:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/02/10/feds-poised-to-withdraw-longstanding-warnings-about-dietary-cholesterol/

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

Why is again that the government needs to stick its bureaucratic nose into what we eat? The last people I would turn to for nutrition advice is nutritionists and dieticians.

Speaking of nutrition… I’ve got a big batch of [Jacques and Julia’s Mediterranean Seafood Stew](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO745sTH71c#t=806). As Julia says, my kitchen is starting to smell like the streets of Marseilles!

MOWC, what a great place for them to be able to escape to. I gotta feeling I could only hang with your son on his relaxed recovery days :).

I stopped at my local bike shop tonight and ran into the guy who is running the Lu Lack Wyco ride. He is so stoked about the ride and was telling me how out in the boonies, all the farmers and small town residents are excited about 300 lunatic cyclists riding their roads and coming through their towns. The local residents were telling him how they put out chairs, literally in the middle of nowhere, so that they could enjoy the cavalcade of brightly colored jerseys and cheer the riders on. Really blew my mind. That kind of reception I would expect for the annual US Pro race in Philadelphia each year, but an amateur torture fest up in the Scranton area? Very cool.

Of course, I was also dismayed at how enthusiastically he described the 103 miles of hills with 10,000 feet of climbing he has laid out for us. He kept telling me not to worry, that I will be fine lol.

Wow. So much for global warming. Headed down to an overnight low of -9 degrees tonight. That’s right. Minus 9 degrees.

And, they’ve posted a Blizzard warning starting tomorrow into Sunday:

18 to 24 inches of snow
25 to 35 mph winds
Gusts up to 50 mph

Temps in the singles digits and teens.

The worst of it is every trip to the grocery store is like the day before Christmas with checkout lines three and four carts deep as people prepare for the next Snowmaggedon.

“Wow. So much for global warming”

Well, this climate change has been a blessing in my neck of the woods. Mildest February possibly! So nice… But we are going out tonight to our favorite restaurant. I do not want to run at 11 pm, so it is double mileage tomorrow. Or so.

Idad, hope the snow track stops soon. Enough snow, do you hear me?

Michael, I think you are right about WC. About the Lu lack Wyco ride. This is the reason you bought that cyclocross bike. Feeds the bike buying problem

deb, I read an article once that posited that “7” is number of bikes a person must own to achieve karmic harmony. 3 road bikes, 1 mtn bike, 1 cross bike, a city bike and a track bike later, I’m usually not permitted to enter a bike shop without a chaperone.

Idad, there is. It’s called the constitution. Not that I expect many politicians to be overly familiar with that document

Deb922, I’ve heard reports of the cold back home this a.m., but if its any consolation, I am still wearing my patagonia hoody sweater here in Tampa this a.m. Hopefully warmer days await on the ship!

Michael, you should come north for the Barry Roubaix race if you like crazy, rural, cold but beer-laden events  You might be able to squeeze in some x-country skiing!

Kmcmom, great timing on getting out of town. You couldn’t have timed it better.

Haha on the bikes, michael. BIL is dangerous at a bike shop. Don’t forget the tri-bike and the upgraded components on the bikes you already owned. Also 2 mountain bikes, one to train and one to race  Forgot about the bike du jour, a fat bike. Getting very popular here, the bike shop says it’s the bike everyone wants, didn’t you know?

BILs winter sport is XC skiing (skate). Who knew that XC skiis rival bike purchases? Don’t get me talking about wax, my BIL spent more on wax for a race last weekend than I did on my entire ski package. He keeps telling the H how he needs back country skis and that his perfectly good skiis need to be replaced so the ones he has can be his rock skiis.

3 miles this morning. I signed up for a 5k on St Patricks day, talked my son into running it with me as he’ll be home for spring break. I’m debating the wisdom of dressing like a leprechaun, though that would probably cause my son to disown me.

Hot Chocolate 15K. 3 minutes faster than last year for this 15K (I thought I was going to die on the course last year). Won age group last year. 3rd this year out of 35 and 30 seconds out of 2nd. I’ll take it. Much larger field this year 10:02 pace on a tough course- tried to keep it under control. I still race hard and it hurts. I still dread it like major surgery ahead of time. I still love the feeling of accomplishment when it’s finished. Great to be out there with husband, daughter and son in law. Husband was 3rd in his age group in the 5K. He ages up tomorrow and would have won 70-74. D and SIL ran his pace and were about 5 minutes behind me, which is good for him Cold day, but nice event. I wore the Lulu puff jacket and I got sweaty, but wasn’t sorry I wore it. Hoka Kailua Trail shoes (I like the trail shoes for better sole wear).

Excellent results MOWC! Happy bday to Mr. MOWC.

It’s crazy for me to even think that anyone was running a race today when our weather is sucky ducks out there - snow, monsoon winds and dropping temperatures.

Deb, I’ve been put on probation over upgrades too! I upgraded my steel and Ti road bikes from Campy Record carbon 10 speed to Campy Record 11 speed. For no rational reason other than I convinced myself that it was necessary because Campy stopped making 10 speed Recond components. My carbon fiber race bike has Dura Ace 11 speed so I can’t upgrade there unless I go to electric shifters. On the other hand, my cross bike only has SRAM Rival on it; I guess I could upgrade that the Red 22…? The fat tire bikes intrigue me. My local bike shop keeps waiving one under my eyes and offering yo let me take it for a weekend. A custom spec’d one that they got the weight down on to 25 lbs! I was sorely tempted until they showed me the price tag.

MOWC, glad you had such a great race. Sounds like you are really back in form.

Did a 2 1/2 hr professional photo shoot for my website this morning. The models were great sports and it was a lot of fun. Can’t wait to see the results.

Had a nice morning run - 9.2 miles. Supposed to get down to 4 degrees tonight with subzero temperatures continuing through Monday. Very unusual for Virginia! I’d like to be with KMC on the boat right now.

Congrats on a good race, MOWC! Happy birthday to your hubby as well.

Speaking of yoga pants - need some fashionista advice.

I have a long torso and short legs. I prefer to wear Capri length pants for any workout (yoga, pilates, running, weights) because any full length pants are too long and require hemming.

In any case, I have found that when I do things like chatarunga/up dog, or do certain exercises, my pants slip beneath my waist - that’s just how I’m built. So I need pants that have a drawstring tie so I can cinch them tight against my waist. None of my cute yoga pants have drawstrings! So I’m relying on the Nike DriFits which have the drawstring, but would like some other options, suggestions or brands you all like? It seems most of what is out there in Capri length doesn’t have a drawstring.
