Is pancakes a Fat Tuesday thing??? I’ve seen several people post about eating pancakes yesterday but I’m not aware of the tradition! The only tradition I know is paczki!!!

Today should be my day to exercise at the gym but don’t think I’m going to make it. Too much work to do at work and I already vowed to take the noon hour for the Ash Wednesday service here on campus. Plus this cold has my nose dripping and just overall a little sluggish. Going to “allow myself” to aim for 10,000 steps and then maybe do a youtube exercise video at home later tonight. Some days you’ve got to go with the flow!!!

When we lived up north Mr. Sabaray’s aunt used to make fasnacht, which I think is similar to paczki - definitely miss those! She’d even hand deliver them. The best.

Shrove Tuesday is the last day of indulgence before Lent begins - for some reason, people started making pancakes with ingredients not to be indulged in during the Lenten season. Now it’s a very popular fellowship activity/fundraiser at Protestant churches - kind of like the Catholic fish fry. Not trying to offend anyone, btw - I am Protestant and Mr. Sabaray is Catholic - so we get the best (and worst) of both religions!

Ok, got it. I’ll be at the fish fry.

Pancakes are a tradition in many denominations (definitely Catholic and Episcopalian) for Shrove Tuesday. The Lenten fast starts the next day. We (meaning H) made pumpkin pancakes from a Trader Joe mix. They were good, but not as good as what we get at our church supper.

My cold is doing a little better but now H has it. We have about an inch of snow over the solid ice now, and it is still very dangerous. My big dog is freaking out since he can’t stand up on it. I’m working from home again.
Will head downstairs to the dreadmill a little later. I sure miss being outside. I walked the dog 2 houses down this morning which was the first I’ve left the property since Sunday. Unheard of…

I’ve been Catholic all my life but never heard of the pancake tradition! Definitely the paczkis and the fish fries!! Maybe it’s regional…

Where I grew up in Phila the Catholic churches had pancake suppers. I remember in 2000 I was just starting a 5 week long trial in San Francisco and arrived on Shrove Tuesday. We had access to all those fantastic SF restaurants, but I asked my co-worker/witness if he wanted to take the cable car up to Grace Cathedral (Episcopal) for the pancake dinner. He was a lifetime Catholic and he was thrilled. We went up there in the pouring rain, got our $5 ticket to the dinner, and loved it! We had lots more nights for the restaurants, except I gave up alcohol for Lent that year. I did really well with that until the day the jury went out. I was also training for Big Sur (one of my 3 Big Surs) that year and got up early every morning and ran up those huge hills in SF and over the GG Bridge once or twice on the longer runs. It was all quite an experience.

IDad, a half mile at 60 rpm – wow! I can do 40 rpm for two miles, but trying to ramp up higher for any appreciable distance totally gasses me.

I am yo-yo-ing all over the place. Wish I could just dispense with eating altogether. I hate having to micromanage every morsel, and I think about food ALL.THE.TIME.

I definitely think about food all the time too, CD. As in all the food I really want but I’m not eating. I’m really trying to add more protein but I’d rather eat, oh, you know…more pancakes.

I am planning on a very hilly half (gently rolling hills, ha) at the end of April and trying to decide on the best way to train for it. It’s been described to me as run up a hill, run down the hill, turn a corner and run up a hill…for 13.1 miles. So obviously I’ll need to do some hill work. Our regular weekday run has us running up a hill to finish; I am thinking if I just add on and do some hill repeats there that should help. I do a lot of hills normally, just by virtue of where I live, but not a lot of the one after another quick up and downs. Any thoughts/suggestions?

The best way to prepare for hills, unfortunately, is to run hills, so I think you have the right idea. Be careful on the downhills, though, since it is easy to get injured with the greater impact. I have an extremely hilly half this Saturday, but it is not looking good for us going to it. It’s about 90 minutes away, will still have ice and snow all over the course, and weather is supposed to be freezing sleet that day. I’m not happy, since I paid pretty much to register and the race director is a friend and will be really disappointed if all the Nashville folks bail. He ran the course yesterday with shoes with screws in the soles, and I’m not going to do that.

This is not a post you will see often from me- I just got exercise shoveling snow! Well, really, chopping up ice. My regular super-duper snow shovel that “won” best shovel in the WSJ a few years ago was worthless for the inch plus thick ice, so I had to chop at it with the heavy spade-shovel. Some broke off in big chunks, others required a lot of muscle. Just worked on the front steps so the dog isn’t terrified to go out. Won’t even consider the sidewalks or driveway.

Generally when we take our pup out for his business we go out our back door and across a long deck to get to the yard. This winter we have had a couple bouts of surfaces solidly covered with ice - we started keeping a couple old towels in the foyer and then throw them on the front porch, one after another to create a pathway to get to the yard where we can at least walk him around for “business”.

Are you going house crazy yet MOWC???

I am starting to go house crazy. It wasn’t too bad Mon and Tues because I felt so bad from my cold, but I’m feeling a lot better (still not great) and I’m really tired of being home. I’ve had some work to do, although it’s been (thankfully) a little lighter since a lot of people are out. The pathway of towels for the dog might help. Ice is just a deal-breaker for him.

MOWC, so sorry for the ice problem. Ice is the worst and with the cold now, it’s not going anywhere.

Every year we will have snow which melts into an inch of ice and we have to chisel it out.

I tried to go XC skiing today. Drove to the trail and they were having lake effect that doesn’t show on the radar and it wasn’t snowing a mile away. Anyways the parking lot wasn’t cleared and it looked like 4" had fallen. Had to turn around and drive home. So disappointed. They are showing that tomorrow’s high temperature is going to be -4.

See what you are missing kmcmom!

My eating is out of control. No stress here, just bad choices. I blame winter and nesting.

Heavy free weight routine last night. Indoor cycling tonight. Gotta stop working out at 10:00 at night; I’ve got too much clutter after work! Three days and I’ll be doing TRX on the foredeck of a sailboat and paddle boarding in the Carribean. Our friends who winter on their boat down there swear if I retired there now, I could have a thriving business doing personal training for all the boaters. How tempting is that :-?

LOL, MNK! I hear you! Working out at 10 pm does not sound too bad… until one realizes that said workout would end at 11+ - holy yikes!!!

Another day of hill walking and weights. My knee is beginning to “bloom”: the bruise turned all sorts of colors. It is time for black tights and boots!!!

I’ve probably got a little bit of a head start. I’ve had my Airdyne for almost five years now. Plus, Airdyne speed is VERY highly strength related. Big strong guys go faster. I’m not big or strong, but I’m stronger than I used to be.and that translates into speed on the Airdyne.

It’s really a diabolical thing, though, It’s crazy how the difficulty and degree of being gassed skyrockets with just slight increases in speed. With wind resistance, energy increases with speed squared.

I haven’t really set any goals on those two five mile rides. Just going at whatever pace I can and slowing down when I get huffin’ and puffin’ hard enough.

More snow this evening. Looks like it could be five or six inches. I can’t bare to go look, actually. Shovelling in the morning.

I feel for ya with the ice MOWC. You guys get ice like we never see up north and it’s brutal with all the pine trees snapping off. We actually got up to 30 degrees today. Even saw icicles melting for the first time in several weeks.

“More snow this evening. Looks like it could be five or six inches. I can’t bare to go look, actually. Shoveling in the morning.”

Hang in there! Someday, spring will come. So sorry to hear that you have to deal with this snow and ice crap!

MOWC - I read the Leo Manzano article on hokas and I’m thinking of taking the plunge. Going to buy online since my local running store seems to be only stocking size 10 and 11. Do the hokas run true to size?

Still hanging at the beach. H managed to pick up a cold somewhere and is feeling pretty under the weather. (Knock on wood I’m OK.) Two nights ago he was tossing and turning/not sleeping into the wee hours, which meant I was awake, too. We’ve never used Nyquil before, but he took some last night – and he’s still asleep.

A few snow showers possible today, but nothing major. Yesterday I was able to take the puppy for a decent walk, but I’m getting antsy about not getting to the gym.
