My cold definitely has me down. I need to work - just too much to do - so I’m getting that in but not much else. I HATE my routine being messed with! Guess this is one of those times I have to go with the flow, eat what my body can take and move when I feel I can move again.
Ohio- I find that they run just a little bit big. I wear 8 1/2 (a full size over my street shoe size) in running shoes and 8s in Hokas. Read the reviews and see what they say for the men’s, but I think it’s about the same. I would recommend the Bondi B 4 for your first pair. You can usually find coupon codes online for Roadrunnersports or RunningWarehouse. I think Zappos has them, too.
Negative temperatures here this morning and it is only going up to the low teens today. This is very, very unusual. It IS sunny, so there’s that. I am making my way back to work, but our neighborhood streets are still very dangerous. Highways seem OK, according to the news. I only have 11 miles to go to work, but it’s not all highway.
abasket, I thought of you last night - our weather for the next few days involves subzero temps and snow so we made an emergency trip to the grocery before everyone else did. We walked in and there was a huge display of fasnacht - looking nothing like we remembered. In past years I would have bought them. It was pretty easy to pass these by.
Currently 8 degrees here - should be subzero temps tonight, high of 20 tomorrow, then a warming trend for the weekend. This has been a miserable winter. I’m headed to the gym this afternoon. Just too cold to run outside, mainly because I don’t have the gear for it. I hate having my routine disrupted.
It appears that many of us are in the deep freeze! -3 right now here and wind chill around -15 to -20. Tomorrow is suppose to be -12 to -15 air temperature. I have 2 kiddos at living at home right now- S is a first year teacher who is living home now but soon to be moving out and D2 is a senior in HS. S has the day off due to cold, D2 just has a 2 hour delay - she is NOT happy! I took advantage of the delay (I have to drive her in today) to get ready a little more leisurely and to do some reports for work from home. But like MOWC says, the sun is out - so there’s that!!!
Got an early shovelling workout in! Yippee! Love shovelling before my morning coffee…
Wow, so cold for you all!
6 x 400 speed work today. It’s foggy and wet outside, and I wanted to stay home, but I thought about what you all are dealing with and went out and got it done.
Ohio, like MOfWC, I find that Hokas are about a bit big (maybe 1/2 size) to true to size. I wear size 9 non-running shoes (39.5-40 in Euro), and 9.5 Bondis were perfect. But as MOfWC said, men’s shoes could be a bit different. Bondi 4 is an awesome shoe.
Sunny and cold–hoping to get up to single POSITIVE digits!
But not a bad day for a walk, if you bundle up. I wouldn’t care to run in this dry air…but I’m not a runner anyway!
The high today is forcasted to be -2! Treadmill for me. I plan on staying inside today, burr!
My furnace isn’t even keeping up and that is very unusual.
When I woke up this morning the temperature was -19, tonight is suppose to be even colder but will warm up into the teens.
Brooks has the Launch (women’s) in a solid, bright pink. No, I didn’t “need” them. I figure they are a fashion item (can wear casually with shorts/Nuu-Muus) as well as a running shoe. So, that makes it a no-brainer, right? I still have my Brooks discount for a couple more weeks, so they were only $70. Who could pass that up?
I did make it to work today, and it turns out I’m not as much over the cold as I thought. I’m OK, and it wasn’t a mistake to come to work, but I’m getting tired and when I talk a lot (which is a lot of the time) I start coughing. I think I’ll go home early. Our neighborhood is still solid ice - no salting, plowing or anything. Once you get to a main road (1/2 mile for me) it’s fine. Huge chunks of ice are flying off of cars and going through the windshields of other cars and injuring people. Welcome to winter in the South!
Wow, that’s totally scary!
Took the day off yesterday cause my legs felt like dead weight. Today I did a Pilates reformer class and an hour on the Cybex arc machine. That did it for me. Signed up for hot yoga tomorrow.
Sick of dealing with the snow piled–all the women in the reformer class agreed that we are even sick of talking about now. Guess more in the next day or so.
I know. And tomorrow we are getting more snow or freezing rain. My half marathon is not going to happen on Saturday. Well, it’s happening, but not with me, H and my daughter driving 90 minutes in freezing rain to run on ice and snow. I can’t risk falling and cold rain is my deal-breaker weather. The race director (a good friend) completely understands that most of the Nashville people are going to bail. He is keeping my race packet for me. My daughter suggested that instead of running Cummins Falls (gorgeous, rural course but tough) that we drink the Scottish Ales that were reviewed in today’s Wall Street Journal!
Very smart decision to bail out, MOfWC! I wonder if they are thinking about canceling the race completely. One year, even Boston organizers thought about canceling it (2007? maybe?) when there was a significant chance of freezing rain in the forecast, but they eventually did not. My friend ran it and said it was not fun to wait for the start.
Oh, and I completely agree with you about the shoes.
Brooks sent me an email with some really pretty yellow ones. Dagnabbit, I do not need more shoes! Not yet!!
They said they aren’t cancelling. It is not a big race. They are going to have a clothes drop for the marathoners at mile 14 and lots of places where you can bail. They are encouraging the slower marathoners to consider stepping down to the half because of how much longer it will take due to the footing.
Glad that you are not doing the race MOWC!
It was -9 this morning but it is going to start getting warmer finally. The downside is the snow in the forecast. We’re running in the Polar Bear run tomorrow morning. We’re doing the Doubler which will have us run a 5K followed by a 5 mile run. I think the break in between (should be about 20 minutes if my 5K pace holds) will help. My biggest problem lately is my hands - they get so cold. I stopped wearing running gloves and am now wearing just regular old big mittens (the super warm kind I use when shoveling snow). So now I’m just hoping that we don’t get so much snow that the course is slick. It is a pretty flat course so that helps.
Yes, mittens are a better choice than running gloves to really do the trick in cold weather. I’ve had these recommended to me:
http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/winter-runners-glove_2.html
Kind of like gloves with a flap over the top mitten.
Cold hands are not something I’ve had a problem with, but many of the women I run with use hand warmers.
Only got down to -1 today - but we have snow/sleet/freezing rain for tomorrow. Come on, spring!
Home now, and my scale says I am a smidgen below my “danger – it’s time to start dieting” weight. So that’s good.
Although I’m a little too close for comfort.
I’d love to go swimming today (indoors). But it’s 11 degrees outside with a windchill of -7, and while I could drive to the fitness center, the parking is so horrendous near there that I end up having to park so far away I may as well walk. I don’t know if I have the guts to go out – the wind is just fierce. Our heating system is really struggling to keep up – right now our first floor is at 63 even though the thermostat is set much higher.
Try to stay warm, folks, and hope everyone who is feeling sick gets better.
“Try to stay warm, folks, and hope everyone who is feeling sick gets better.”
I second this!
