Did a strength training workout and then ran 3.5 miles. Got done just before it started raining.
Could barely face the treadmill today, but H set me up with a recorded Grey’s Anatomy from Thursday, which helped. Got 5.4 miles done for a 33 mile week. I go to California on business Wednesday, so at least there’s that… The ice is melting outside- finally.
I did a miserable 5 miles on the treadmill. Nowhere near a 30 mile week!
Glad your ice is melting and you have California on the horizon. I keep thinking I might be able to fit in Bromfield’s suitcase. I could use a break.
I got to be like you northerners! I shoveled! It consisted of hacking away at ice and being rewarded when it broke into chunks, then shoveling the chunks and slush with my super-duper snow shovel. That slush is HEAVY! Streets and walks look pretty good, but our north facing driveway (flat, fortunately) is still ice covered and it is supposed to get really cold tomorrow. The dog is thrilled. He can walk outside by himself now and he stayed out front to get some fresh air. Still would not be OK to run outside because there are a lot of patches of black ice.
Alrighty MOWC, so now when we say we spent an hour shoveling you will allow us to count it for exercise - albeit not a super great one for your back!!!
I went xcountry skiing today, for the first time in probably ten years.
Even though I’m obviously older & it’s post TKR and pre needed surgery on my feet, I did great!
I think water aerobics & swimming has improved my balance.
So we’ve decided to stay an extra day!
Ek, wonderful news.
So, it’s -10 and I just broke trail on the hill. Kinda like wearing a weight-vest in my post-cruise condition
Have not quite got my land legs back yet, which is weird. I’m hopeful the hike will have helped that somewhat, because I’m tired of walking like a drunken sailor!
Well I survived the Polar Bear run on Saturday. We got about 5" of snow during the night before the race and it was crazy. The area immediately around the start/finish line was plowed fairly well but the rest of the course was not. So it was running in snow/slush for a lot of the race. It was hard running; it felt like running in sand on the beach. Not to mention all the slush getting onto/into shoes. I would have been happy to call it quits after the 5K but DH was in a lot better spirits than I was so if he was going to run the 5 mile run, then I was too. I’m really glad I did because I thought it was easier than the 5K. Part of the course was the same and all the runners had packed the snow down more so it was better and the part of the course that was new was on roads that were in better shape. Fortunately it was warmer and there wasn’t much wind so I wasn’t really cold. It was quite an experience and I’m glad we did it but I’m not in a hurry to do it again.
Yesterday the dog got a good 6 mile walk - he loves being outside in the snow - but other than that it was a slug day with plenty of eating so I’m up 1.5 lb for the weekend. Grrrr!
KMC - I love the “Decadence of the Seas”! I think I’ve been on that ship! Glad you enjoyed the cruise.
MOWC-Oh wow, ice dams are the worst. Sorry for the hassle and all the clean-up/repair that will need to be done. They talked about the number of storm-related deaths in TN on the news this morning. This sure has hit your state hard.
BB-Eeek! No furnace, on top of no oven! I hope you were able to stay warm enough through the night and that they can get it repaired quickly today.
I admire all of you for the treadmill running. I hate it so I just don’t do it. I’ll run in the cold and I’m looking forward to Daylight Savings Time in a couple weeks so that it will be possible to run in the evenings again.
Lower body workout at the gym with my trainer tonight. Just in case my legs weren’t sore enough from Saturday’s run!
@C3Baker, you’re more chipper than me - that would have been a non-enjoyed run for me! I know that running in the sand is hard - I do that in the summer at our beach - but the view makes it all worthwhile - in the winter, not so much!
Count me in as someone who is super excited about DST arriving - may it bring some warmer temperatures with it!
"BB-Eeek! No furnace, on top of no oven! I hope you were able to stay warm enough through the night and that they can get it repaired quickly today.
Thanks. The marvel of German engineering steam oven is on the way to our house!
The furnace is still dead. The tech who was supposed to be fixing the damn thing… did not show up. I’m royally ticked off because I spend a good chunk of time clearing the space in the garage instead of doing the work I was supposed to finish before the Oscars. Missed the Oscars as the result… It is not that bad - 63 degrees as we speak (about 30 outside). The cats are stretched in front of the fireplaces. If the saga with the no-show techs continues, I might start growing fur!
Stay warm, everyone! Maintain your footing, do not fall.
Good luck, Bunsen! My week is pretty nuts. We have our huge annual sales meeting so I had to be downtown really early this am and tomorrow am and then go back for dinners both nights. I came home to run at 3:30 this afternoon. It’s close to OK outside, but still really cold and windy, so I did the dreadmill. 4.5 miles. My flight to Calif Wed am is at 6:25am. Won’t that be fun?
I saw an empty parking spot right on the closest end of the row to the door to my office building when I got there mid-morning after being downtown. God forbid I would walk an extra 10 yards to park in a space without snow on it! I barreled my SUV over the big bump of snow at the end of the space. I thought "I’ve coddled myself all week so I wouldn’t fall, and now I’m going to climb over this snow/ice lump and fall on my @## !
I didn’t…
MOWC:
You are smart to be careful on that ice. You guys get the scary kind, patches of black ice, that can hurt you!
Well, after our balmy 29 degrees yesterday, it is now headed back to unthinkable cold. Headed down to -9 degrees tonight with wind on top of that. Yikes.
The little “warm” spell got my basement up to 47 without heat. I ran my little space heater for an hour, got it up to 53 degrees, and did a full basement workout. 53 is fine, just a little chilly for planks and stuff on the exercise mat, 40’s is too inhospitable for an hour. Even the dreaded Airdyne sounds good, then.
Felt great to sling some weights around. Even got warmed up enough to take off my top layer and do most of the workout with a long sleeve tech-t.
OMG. It’s 7 below zero right now.
How much snow is there in Massachusetts? There’s so much snow In Massachusetts that Elizabeth Warren is calling herself an Eskimo…
H (over 60) and I (pushing 60) are running our first half in 2 weeks. This race is a low keyed race . Any words of wisdom? We are following a schedule pretty well. The element of weather is still not known , as we have had a warm winter but it snowed yesterday so back to maybe 20’s to 30’s at the beginning of the race. Got the shoes and clothes. Stretches down. We have been training in the afternoons and evenings and the race is at 7AM. So I have been thinking about food and what we should eat in the AM? I am resigned to not worrying about time, just finishing. Our paces are pretty consistent. They have a lot of stands and I am thinking we do not need to carry water? I am kind of irritated with myself that I cannot keep up with H and he is not interested in slowing down for me so we will be not running side by side like we did in the 10K. I cannot blame him, as I looked at last years race times and the men were much faster than the women (I suspect that the slower men just did not enter) . I also hope there is no ice. Seem to be thinking out loud. So, any last words of wisdom?
Nutrition before and during that half is going to be important, rocymtnhigh. If you haven’t practiced with sports drinks or gels, now is the time. Some people’s stomachs react badly to some of them. You will also want to experiment with eating a light breakfast about 2 hours before the race- maybe an English muffin with peanut butter. Stomach problems can ruin the race- no matter how slowly you plan to go. Don’t carry water- you will be fine with the aid stations. Got to get to work, but I’ll post more later if I think of more. Good luck!
Haven’t posted for a few days because I have nothing to report. H thoughtfully “shared” his cold, so at the moment I feel like cr*p. Sunday was “warm” here in MA (warm is a relative term these days) – it was over 30 degrees! We managed to get the layer of ice off the back steps and H cleared snow from the small, flat overhang that shelters the front door. Yesterday the temperatures dropped again, and today the effective temperature is -16. I guess on the plus side, there’s no snow in the forecast for the next several days …
Rocky, best of luck on your half - so impressive!!!
I have not run a half but wanted to share two cents about your hubby leaving you in the dust…
. Chances are you will find other people - the lady in pink ahead of you or the slower 60 year old guy to the right of you - whoever you choose to “secretly” pace with. I do this all the time in a race. And if that person starts to slow down at some point, I feel “powerful” if I can pass them - then I choose another “sitting duck” to be my new pace person - kind of a mental game!!
I prefer running in the afternoon or evening. Of course, more races are NOT this time - they are in the morning. I would suggest you carve out a time or two before the race to do a couple of morning runs about the time the race would be. For my body morning just feels different. You want your race conditions to be as comfortable as possible.
Best of luck - go you!
Weirdly, this was in my newsfeed right after I posted above:
http://m.runnersworld.com/nutrition-for-runners/whole-food-alternatives-to-gels
Ran 25 minutes plus upper body weight workout.
Did my 2 mile hill up and down walk plus weights last night. Eating was not good - we went out and had some wine with our dinner at Purple.
