There were no people anywhere at the state park on Friday and very little signs that very many people had been hiking there at all. Just snowmobile tracks. I heard a snowmobile in the distance when I parked the car, but never actually saw one. Thank goodness for the snowmobile tracks. Otherwise, it would have been a real slog.
I could’t believe that even popular trails on the popular side of the park weren’t broken out. The Audubon Center at the lake where I flat land snow shoe is always chock full of people, even on week days.
FINALLY back outside! 7.2 miles this morning - temp in the upper thirties, felt terrific. Lots of gravel and salt still on the roads, but felt so good to be back outdoors.
19 degrees this a.m. on the hill, which after yesterday’s melt, made for a crunchy trudge. With highs above 40 all week, my trail will become a muddy mess I expect by the end of the week So I enjoyed the fondant-like scene this morning while it lasts!
Back at the gym this morning – 3.42 miles of my run/walk. No PRs in any category (time, distance) but at least I’m getting back in the routine. I still have the dregs of a cough, but otherwise it’s all good.
Maybe I’ll head over to my favorite reservoir later this week for an outdoor run if the weather holds. Today it’s supposed to hit 40 degrees, so things are melting! Yay!!! We still need 2 inches of snow though, to break the record. Maybe over the weekend.
It was warm and light after work, but rain was starting so I chickened out and came home to the dreadmill. 3.2 miles on tired legs. I have not adjusted to the time change. Felt sluggish all day.
I have not laughed this much in years. Apparently H and I are the poster child for the half. I am going to call this 'if they can do it anyone can ’ . The half marathon web Facebook page has a big picture of us 'running ’ to the finish line intense and laughing at the same time.
I was just glad I made it and not crying.
Lower body workout last night and I feel it today, especially climbing the stairs at work. I am so excited to run tonight - first time to be able to run after work since October! I am a Daylight Savings Time fan for sure. I hope the rain lets up, but I’ll be running regardless. After all the snow and sub-zero temps, it’s a relief to have the rain.
Interesting note- I had a “field trip” this morning for work where I was at an offsite facility touring it with my department. We were on concrete floors for about 90 minutes walking and a lot of standing. The building was about 16000 square feet. I felt trashed at the end of it and I was sort of discouraged since I consider myself pretty fit. I wore comfortable shoes, but they weren’t padded like athletic shoes. I asked the others how they felt and we were ALL tired and one reported a sore back! We are all enough familiar with retail space to know how tiring standing and walking on concrete can be, but this was not a whole day or anything! Just goes to show you… I wish I had worn my Hokas.
Back from vacation – took many long walks on beaches, which was very nice. After starting and abandoning two novels that were horrible, I ended up reading “The Big Fat Surprise,” by Nina Teicholz, so I thought about our little community here a lot. Based on our discussions, I wasn’t surprised by what she wrote – although I now feel like I should be even more skeptical about any recommendations about diet, even hers. It seems like there are studies and experts pro and con for every scenario – low fat, high fat, low carb, etc. I did find myself craving a good steak while reading her book.
I will say one thing – I have always loved butter, have always cooked with butter (even back in the margarine days) – and that’s one practice I will continue!
