Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Slept through a yoga class, so I went to the gym and did some cardio on the stair climbing machine and the treadmill.

Good luck with your repairs, Idad. Luckily we didn’t have any ice dams, but I did have someone come to shovel snow from the roof.

Serv Pro disaster relief crews (from Oklahoma) arrived this morning at 9:00 am and tore with a vengeance into the place. Pretty amazing work, actually. They left at 2:30. Sheet rock gone from various walls and closets and an entire wall of the kitchen. All down to bare stud walls and rafters. But, I have a sink, stove, and fridge and I’m basically functional. I was smart and put together a big plastic bin of the most essential food/cooking items: olive oil, vinegars, condiments, coffee stuff, etc. etc. that is sitting on my dining room table for ready access (all but one kitchen cupboard is gone).

I fired up the grill for a rib eye steak (and chicken breasts for tomorrow). Yumm…

Cats have even (tenuously) emerged from the basement, Scaredy Cat first, followed some time later by the “brave” one… They are now slowly doing laps, casing the joint.

The worst is the the smell. They spray treat all the exposed wood with mildew/mold preventative. Gag me…

Good luck iDad. I have faith that you will still eat well through all of this.
Good job, everyone, on emerging from the deep chill and getting the exercise done!

I got out of work too late to run outside as I had planned, so some of my exercise was lugging my gym bag all the way from the car up to my office and then back. I did 3.3 miles on the dreadmill when I got home, so at least the streak lives on. It was an exhausting day.

And, why I don’t hike above treeline in winter or hike period in bad winter weather. I don’t know what people are thinking:

A Berkeley undergrad/Berkeley MBA and not a lick of sense leads to an unfortunate ending:

Watch the rescue team get picked up and tossed by wind. Crazy.

2.7 mile walk, outside at the beach with a fairly strong headwind. Several H-U-G-E half frozen puddles across the roads, which required creative paths to get around. But, a nice sunny morning so it’s all good.

idad – I read that story in the Boston Globe. She made so many bad decisions. And why on earth did her boyfriend just let her go ahead with such dumb plans? On another note, hope your place is put back together soon.

She had apparently done some guided climbs (Mt. Kilamanjaro, etc.) and fancied herself a bit of a mountainteer. She had, however, never hiked in the Presidentials in the White Mountains and certainly never in winter. Above tree line, those peaks are fully exposed to the prevailing NW winds. I’ve seen people in down jackets on a 75 degree day at the parking lot.

It’s why I’m such a wimp when it comes to picking good weather for hiking in those mountains.

With those forecast winds and temps, the hike she attempted was a predictable disaster with almost 100% certainty. A 15 mile Presidential traverse is a VERY hard hike on a nice summer day. Add in below 0 temps and 100 mph winds…
I just shake my head. The old timers around here referred to it a suicide hike from the moment she stepped out of the car.

Here’s the video the Search and Rescue Team shot of their hiking conditions the next morning (clear day, but 108 mph winds measured on Mt. Washington)

What a sad story, idad. There is nothing wimpy about being safe and prudent. So be safe, everyone!

People underestimate mountains all the time. Take Mt. Rainier - it looks so peaceful from a distance, yet so many needlessly perished on Mt Rainier because they picked a wrong day, were underprepared, etc.

Bromfield - did a double take. I’ve never fallen asleep DURING any yoga class that I’ve been in. But I’ve come close to falling asleep on the treadmill!

I’ve practically fallen asleep in yoga.
The instructor passes out rice hull eye masks, to wear during Shavasana, at end of class. She also walks around the room misting those who want it, with lavender.
( if only she would throw in a foot rub too!)

But yeah, you have to be prepared hiking. D informed me she wants to take up mountaineering, and in preparation, she is going to do more climbing.
I am supportive, but I was raised by parents who wanted me to learn to swim in water that wasn’t even to my waist. They weren’t big adventurers.
Mt Rainier especially, can be brutal.
It has claimed the life of many, including Willi Unsoeld.

I agree that people can really underestimate conditions in mountains/at altitude. I’m glad you are so cautious, iDad.

OhioP–what I meant was that I didn’t wake up in time to go to a very early morning yoga class. I never sleep through hot yoga. I can get pretty close to it at the end (shivasna)!

Today was Pilates reformer class and an outside walk (2 miles). I’m going to the Boston Flower Show tomorrow–need to think Spring!

A 2 mile walk for me, too. Skipped the bus and just walked all the way from point A to point C. It is 65 and sunny outside!

That saddest mountaineering story I’ve ever read is the story of Willi Unsoeld taking his 20-something year old daughter Nanda Devi Unsoeld on an expedition to climb her namesake mountain Nandi Devi… and burying her on the mountain.

My rule of thumb is, “what happens if I fall and break a bone?” Am I equipped to stay warm/dry until help arrives? I carry lots of warm clothing/emergency shelter and I do easy short hikes in the winter.

Basement workout for me. The cats came out of their respective hiding places while I was down there and insisted on a lot of attention, so it took a while, but a good solid workout. Improvised a bit as the chin up bar, Jungle Gym, and cable pulley are piled with clothes from various closets and I’m trying desperately to not just pile clothes on the sofa. I know that leads to a long-term mess as I try to preserve just a little normalcy to having the place torn up. We are back to cold weather (mid teens tonight). Not what I was hoping for as I have large walls down to just studs and plywood with no insulation. Could be a bit drafty tonight!

What a mess Idad! My D had a pipe burst in the condo above hers last year, she was so lucky that her bf checked in on it while she was at work or it could have been worse than it was. And it was quite a mess. She had to have her floors replaced but thankfully not too many contents as her bf moved things for her.

3 mile run. The road was almost ice free and I ran in capris. This has been so nice.

I know this weather will normalize, but for now we have skipped the 40s and 50s and moved to 66 and humid with a few raindrops. 5 miles outside in shorts after work.

I take it that you are not complaining about today, MOfWC!

Certainly not complaining, but it’s just strange and, frankly, a little bit of an adjustment. I mean- I was SWEATING!

4 x 100 speed work today, with warm up & cool down jog, about 2.5 miles total

Good morning. So sad about that girl on the mountain.

Mch won’t even let me up the hill without my phone. Probably for good reason…if I did break something, no one but the deer would be likely to stumble across me and I’d never get back down.

MomWC, the weather even here has been quite a shift…no integrity left in the snow and very sloppy treks for snowshoes, and very sweaty in my down hoodie. However, the upside to the extra sweat coupled with more behaving on the food front is that the extra cruise weight is gone and I’m starting to claw back some of the other gains this year  Can’t wait to open the pool and add swimming/aquajogging to the routine!

Yay for the disappearing cruise weight. I’m trying to tighten up the ship and dig into my winter insulation!

I always take my phone on hikes, although I bury it in my backpack so I’m not tempted to answer it. Not everywhere has reception, but a surprising number of places do. Almost always have reception on the actual summits.
