Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

VH, I posted too soon. If you go back to see your ortho and s/he has not done an MRI, I would ask why not. X-rays will not reveal if there is anything wrong with soft tissue or disks. MOfWC gave you some good advice, and I would flow idad’s plan that he posted above. Pains and aches that don’t go away are so frustrating! So sorry you have been dealing with this.

It was 79 degrees after work! I’m so used to being cold that I don’t know what to do with it! 5.3 miles for the day.

VeryHappy, I have experienced very similar pain in my right hip to the point where I too could not find a pain free sleeping position. Once you rule out mechanical/structural problems in your hip and lower back complex, there is an excellent chance that remedial exercises could resolve the problem. As others have said, this is not an overnight process and even a month of doing the exercises is just the beginning. In my case, it took 2 months to begin to feel changes and I must regularly do a variety of glute, hip flexor, abductor and ab work to stay on top of things. Hang in there!

I turned off the fans in one room for a few minutes and did 5 miles on the dreaded Airdyne. I couldn’t hear the iPod with the fans running and riding the dreaded Airdyne without the iPod would be unthinkably boring! The Serve Pro guys said they plan to come take my fans away tomorrow. My neighbors got there’s today, so I took them a gift: Four pair of ear plugs, enough for everybody!

Thanks Bunson. The transition from indoor treadmill to outside running is always a difficult one for me. You have to push yourself vs. the treadmill. Last three days outside have been rough. Seems like I don’t catch my breath until I’m at mile three. It’ll be good to hit the track this week

Good luck with the hip, VeryHappy. I’m following this discussion closely because my mother is having terrible hip pain (and knee and back) pain. She’s convinced that a knee surgery is going to set her right, and I’m terrified that even more inactivity after the knee surgery is going to send her into a downward spiral. I’ve suggested PT, and will try again. I had good luck with PT when my shoulder was frozen, but it took months and months of daily exercising. After that experience, I can’t say enough positive things about the benefits of PT.

5 miles of walking for me today.

Here’s another exercise video on the hip mobility issue.

Walked to the beach and back a few times. Snorkeled a bit, saw a giant needlefish and a senile puffer in addition to the usual array of fishes. The puffer was huge, slow, and wrinkly. It barely moved when I prodded it out of its hiding spot so Mr. could take a few pictures.

22 minute run, upper body weights & planks.

@BunsenBurner, Yes, you have a good memory. I’m the one who lifts heavy things over her head for osteoporosis, and I have reversed mine. My bones are no longer osteoporotic and I remain at my full height of five feet and no inches.

@interesteddad: Thanks for the additional exercises. I really don’t think it’s related to a back or disk problem, however. I’ve never had lower back pain, and this pain is very specifically in the left hip. The PT lady, as she massaged my butt, could absolutely feel the hard knotty tissue in there and could also feel, as the weeks went by, that it was breaking up.

Sorry to hear about your need for ServePro. But they are absolutely the best (if not the only) for this kind of fix.

As several of you have mentioned, one month of PT is probably just the beginning. I’m continuing to do my PT exercises every day (as I said, I’m very compliant!) and I’ll see where I am in another month or two.

Very Happy, my D has been suffering with hip pain also. She went to my H’s excellent rheumatologist and he gave her a cortisone shot, he thought it might be bursitis and that helped for a year but the pain came back. She went back to the rheumatologist and he thought it was nerve pain. One of the things he suggested for hip pain was a MRI to find the nerve problem and then a cortisone shot. He thought the problem was in her back.

She went to her regular physician and she thought it might be sciatica and now D is doing PT to see if that helps.

Not sure what to tell you, but D has been suffering. If I were you I might go back to the rheumatologist and try a cortisone shot. The rheumatologist said that the cortisone shot was the right thing for bursitis but apparently D’s problems are more complex than that.

Very Happy, I hope your hip pain resolves and you are soon pain free.

Ran my least favorite hill this morning in preparation for next month’s hilly half. Happily I’m seeing some improvements time-wise from week to week. Registered for 6 weeks of TRX starting next week with a trainer who left our center and started her own place - looking forward to that.

Feeling a little ambivalent about my current Pilates set-up. I can usually only schedule one session a week with my preferred instructor and lately she’s been asking to move my sessions at very short notice. I try to be agreeable but at the same time, I’m feeling a little frustrated because I enjoy running with my group and find I work much harder and am seeing improvement the more I run with them. The continual shifting of Pilates is making that difficult. It would be awkward to just suddenly stop going, but I’ve tried to nicely communicate the need for consistency and I’m just being brushed off. We have a relatively new studio that has far more options for Pilates - I guess that’s why I’m thinking of starting to go there. I just hate things being awkward.

Cardio, weights and a plank this morning. Cold and heavy drizzle, which is not doing much to put me in a spring mood. Grrrrrr …

sabaray - IMO, your “preferred instructor” should no longer carry the designation of preferred! I’m not a fan of things being awkward, either – and I’m even less of a fan of being brushed off. There’s a pretty easy fix for this – again, IMO.

idad - hope the fans leave today. Not sure I would have survived all that noise and cold.

CBB, you sound much like Mr. Sabaray! I think I will just tell her my schedule requires more options to schedule from (currently our sessions are automatically scheduled) and leave it at that!

Sabaray, clearly your out is the scheduling - it’s not working for you! If you were someone with all day flexibility the switch ups might be fine - but I’m guessing you are not - so that’s your out. ( I know, easier said than done!)

Hello all! Best run in a while yesterday. Hope you have been faring well this winter.

Exactly- Just say that you’ve enjoyed working with her, but with the weather getting better you will be doing more running and need more scheduling options.

3.5 miles, weights, and the usual core stuff. Interesting to observe other folks’ routines. Most ladies hop on the treadmills for 10-15 min and then bail out. Dudes prefer ellipticals and weight machines. I was the only woman who picked up the 15 lb dumbbells.

Good to see you Deborah - hopefully all our weather is on the positive upswing! And as of this weekend, NO MORE OFFICIAL WINTER!!! (in terms of the season anyway!)
