28 degrees and sunny- 5 miles for 32 mile week. Hiking around Sewanee now.
Didn’t fit any formal exercise in my day and now it’s raining. Maybe I’ll run up and down the stairs 20 times.
Brief escape from the snow and cold in MA! I’m in San Francisco. Got in a short walk–2 miles. Tomorrow, I plan on tackling the Filbert Street steps to go to Coit Tower/Telegraph Hill. I read an interesting book about wild parrots in this area, and hope I can get a glimpse of them!
Cold and sunny here. Basement is freezing: 49 degrees. That means the third day in a row of dreaded Airdyne. Another 5 miles. At this rate, I’m gonna be due for an oil change – either on the bike or me, I’m not sure…
That thing gets my legs, arms, shoulders, and lungs burning.
Nice day today, short 5k run. 30.85 mile week, my highest mileage in a while. Enjoy SF, Bromfield!
Now 3 weeks post half. First 'formal ’ exercise today. 2 miles walk did us in. Spent one week at sea level a week ago. Time for retraining. I believe it only takes 2 weeks to loose the training edge, and it takes 2 weeks to loose the altitude ( we were only gone from 5000 ft one week).
“Didn’t fit any formal exercise in my day …”
Me too! But the garden beds have been weeded. I think I will do some weights tonight.
Spent a long weekend chaperoning my parents at a spa in the Poconos that features a ton of fitness and exercise classes of every variety from mind-body stuff like a broad variety of yoga styles, to cardio workouts, to functional movement. My 87 yr old parents, who have mobility restrictions, really thrived in the environment, taking chair yoga, letting me assist them in working out in the gym and taking them into the pool with adaptive flotation devices. In addition to being gratifying in the context of the parent/child relationship, it was remarkable to see the very real transformative effect of a weekend of relaxation and movement based activity. Noticeably improved energy levels, cognition, engagement in conversation, skin tone. Remarkable - and an object lesson on how important it is to keep moving and active as we age.
As an aside, I took 2 spinning classes, one excellent and focused on using wattage based training. The other was just about the worst spinning class I ever took because the instructor, though very nice, didn’t have a clue. Gave bad and wrong information about how to position feet in the pedal cages, misinformation about how to adjust seat height, gave resistance instructions based on “number of turns” on the knob, gave incorrect cadence ranges for the type of “road” we were supposed to be simulating and did 2 second jumps. There were people in the class for whom this was a first time indoor cycling experience and the instructor’s constant missteps made it less than an enjoyable experience. It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut and not correct him. Very frustrating.
Finally tried running again – thankfully, no bloody toes! So, 2x around my local reservoir; about 34 degrees with a moderate headwind. It was snowing a bit when I finished – honestly, will this ever end??? Coasted into a gas station on fumes on my way to run – the tank was about as empty as I’ve ever seen it. (That’s one of my buried fears – being stranded someplace, out of gas.)
idad – how are the repairs to your condo going since they got everything dried out? I thought of you when I bought some steak to grill tonight. This will be the first time I’ve used the grill since probably mid-January, i.e. before all the snow. Before the first blizzard hit the grill was secured to the patio stairs so it wouldn’t blow around. Then it snowed … and snowed … and snowed … The grill got completely buried. H finally “freed” the grill over the weekend, and I’m happy to be back cooking outside. It reminds me of spring/summer, even if nothing else does!
MNK - that spin class sound horrendous! Did you tell mention it to a supervisor or someone? Otherwise, the weekend sounds great.
Repairs are in a holding pattern, All the demo and drying is done and the place is liveable with minor aggravation (food in bins on dining room table, etc. As soon as insurance adjusters have done their thing, my landlord has a contractor lined up to start the rebuild. I think he’s going to replace the kitchen cabinets and counters, which will be nice.
It should be minimal aggravation (other than workmen for many days), but I don’t have date yet on when it will begin. If I had to guess, maybe sometime in the next week or two.
Biggest aggravation right now is having two closets out of commision, which means I can’t get to my chin up bar, which is serving as coat storage.
Michael- that sounds like a great weekend for your parents. I hear you on the bad spin class. It’s frustrating when you KNOW what bad advice an instructor is giving!
I had a good 12 mile run on Saturday. I’m a little slower than I was in the fall, but not much and I think I’ll be able to pick it up now that I’m able to run more often (thank you Daylight Savings time!). A 6 mile walk with the dog yesterday followed by watching March Madness. Tonight I have a workout at the gym with my trainer.
Michael-it sounds like your parents had a terrific experience at the spa. It’s really great that you were able to be there with them. Sorry about the spin class - that sounds terrible. I admire you for keeping your mouth shut. I am not very good at that sometimes.
Sabaray - that is really impressive weekly mileage! You are going to be great in the marathon!
rockymthigh-I hope you’re able to get back into a training routine to not lose ground from your efforts. Completing the half was a terrific accomplishment!
CBBBlinker-Yay for no bloody toes! I hate those cracks/splits in skin that seem to happen more in the winter. I hope you have healed for good to be able to run regularly again.
I am so done with winter weather!
3.5 mile run with a tad of walking cause it was windy as all get out! It’s possible I might have been mistaken for Dorothy!!!
Decided H’s foot problem is probably a bone spur. He has many of the risk factors–diabetes, overweight, flat feet to begin with, and mostly sedentary except for occasional bouts of exercise. I’m going to stop bugging him to walk and just take care of myself for now.
I wonder if he could be talked into using the stationery bike again? I don’t think that would put any weight on his heel.
Great weather for outdoor activities…finally! Looking forward to using our grill again too.
Momannoyed, a stationary bike, especially a recumbent bike, could provide the cardio he needs without the pressure on the feet.
Grilled a steak last night. It would have been a crime not to use the grill - the weather was excellent.
Already walked 2 miles with more to come later tonight.
Grilled chicken here. I threw mine atop some romaine topped with raw veggies and some cheddar cheese. It WAS delicious!
Decided I can’t wait on the weather to start my track season workouts. Mile warmup/warmdown with 24 x 133 meters speed work at 90% effort.
Going to try and help my brother out and try the plant-based diet with him as he recovers from bypass surgery. Probably helping me out to as I want to get down to 130 lbs for the big track meet in July. I’m on my 5th day and so far I haven’t stopped the car to take a bite out of a cow on the way to work. Holding steady.
Walk and home workout (stability ball, elastics, etc).
Dinner salad for me.
Went to a condo association meeting on the water damage (48 of 50 units were wet, I believe). Aw, gawd… it sounds like it might be a long haul before repairs are made. The property management company used pick axes on the roof when they cut channels in the ice dams ($28,000 effort). They smashed holes in the roof shingles with the pick axe every place they cut the ice dam and the holes caused much/most of the flooding. That and the fact that they failed to put down an ice water membrane along the roof edges when they re-did roofs over the last couple of years. Lawsuits are brewing and I can only imagine how that’s going to bog down the insurance settlement.
The insurance is a major catastrophe commercial claim and has to be setting with one lump some payment to the condo association after all 48 units are estimated by the claims consultant for the insurance company.
I’m thinkin’ all this probably means that contractors aren’t going to be starting bright and early any day this week! Fortunately, my unit is livable with just minor inconvenience. A lot of people (including my neighbors on both sides) are living in hotels
OMG, idad. What a disaster!
