Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Wed – walk and home workout
Thu – walk (checked out hill)
Fri – run and sprints, woohoo! (fun)

^ once upon a time, when I was a serious practioner of martial arts, my Sensei said to me " Be powerful like the ocean, not like the raging river", a concept and image that I still find relevant to my fitness philosophy today. Depth and enduring over time.

Compared to many of you, I am a newbie to exercise. I reluctantly exercised in the beginning because I had to in order to lose weight. It was all about the pounds and how I looked. Now running is so important that I plan entire weeks around when I run, when TRX is, when Pilates is…I get a tremendous sense of satisfaction when I hit a new goal that I’ve set for myself or try something new. I don’t run to maintain my weight now…I run because I really enjoy it. I don’t always enjoy the weather or getting up at 4 every day to meet my group, but it’s made a huge difference in my feelings of well-being and fulfillment.

MNK, I wasn’t sure if your post was directed to me or MOWC. MOWC is endurance personified! Yes, I went for a certain amount of raging river today, but it was intentional. I felt good during the first portion of my run so I decided to incorporate strides for the last mile. I’m calling them strides anyway, ;-). Stretches where I sped up. Then, when I still had oomph after my run I decided to go ahead and get in a few sprints. I do like to incorporate speed work on occasion, and low hills used to be a regular part of my run, so I would like to get back to that, too. Keep on keepin’ on, all, and have a great weekend! Time to get cleaned up and figure out when I want to get rolling in the kitchen today.

(edit for typo correction)

Wow, Bunsen, 19 percent is killer!

Good luck with the stairs, Bromfield. Bunker Hill Monument’s 294 steps gave me quite a workout last year, and you have many more!

Wise words, MoWC. Here the heat is often an excuse for not getting out and exercising. I’ve learned to cope with being a hot, red-faced, sweaty mess and treating the shower as a reward. I like the idea of being powerful like an ocean. MNK; I will think of floating along on it when I go out to walk this afternoon

More good wishes for your ride tomorrow, MNK.

Sounds like a great workout, Deborah!

DebT, it was in response to MOWC post; yours hadn’t appeared on my browser yet :). But the image or metaphore of the ocean doesn’t mean a lack of intensity. As someone who has crossed the Gulph Stream in a sailboat in gale force winds and seas, I can attest to that! As I’ve posted, I’m a big fan of high intensity interval training for cardio work.

Those are very cool. Unfortunately, I have 2 Launch pairs already…

Good luck tomorrow, MKAT.

You inspired me. I lubed up both chains on the dreaded Airdyne. Man, I was ridin’ in style. Smooth! Almost like cruising down the road on a sunny day in an old [Cadillac Eldorado convertible!](1965 Cadillac Eldorado **SOLD** - YouTube) Well, not quite, but I got my dreaded five miles in.

60 degrees here today. I’ve got the first boneless pork roast of the “summer” on the Weber grill. Made a batch of South Carolina style mustard BBQ sauce. Yumm. Just waiting on the thermometer to beep and tell me when it’s done…

I think I put the link in the walking thread, but here’s Wednesday’s hike. Nothing spectacular, but a nice little jaunt in the snow.

Music by a Harvard man… well, ummm, a Harvard dropout.

I think this couple should have been grateful that the school made their kids get off their butts and do some PE, but noooo…

I think I saw a fair share of crazy lawsuits lately making the news, but this one takes the cake, IMO.

Weights and pushups for me for today.

Averaging 16,000 steps a day climbing up and down things in New Zealand.

This country is amazing. Google “tunnel beach Dunedin” (a fun hike that starts at the top, which means you have to hike uphill to get back) and look at some of the images. The whole place has scenery like this!

Tomorrow’s schedule includes a hike on the Franz Joseph glacier.

Maybe this should be in the brag thread.

Looks like a magnificent trip notrichenough!

Thanks for the good wishes IDad. I’m getting ready to leave for the ride. Temperatures will be a high of 55 but the winds will be a constant 15-20 mph with regular gusts into the 30’s . Yikes. Probably all on the nose too! Lol.

Happy trails, Michael!

Idad, your walk vid was actually the Cadillac  nice car…

Notrichenough, what a lovely trip. Enjoy. Ya sure got my hill beat

Bunsen, unbelievable story. Somebody whack those bozos with a wifflebat for heaven sake.

MomWC…I need to post your wise words somewhere I will see them every time I forfeit a hill trek or workout because of “work,” which since losing a long-term employee last summer and hiring 2 new, one an apprentice, has been WAY TOO OFTEN!

Maybe I should tell Siri to recite it to me every morning when I wake up…

Good luck, MNK!

Sounds like a great trip, notrichenough. I got a kick out of your reference to a hike on the Franz Joseph glacier – I’ve “been there” virtually on the treadmills at my gym. I’m sure the real life version will be even better.

Oops:

Here’s the Mt Pemi hike video:

Hope MnK is enjoying a great bike ride!

Did our trial run on the course this morning - “gently rolling hills” and a killer wind today made for not so spectacular times but we know what to expect now. We reminded ourselves that it was just a training run and had a nice breakfast together afterwards. Sometimes it’s about the fellowship more than anything.

I am super tired today. Glad for the chance to recharge over the weekend.

Nice, notrichenough!
I want to go on a hike with iDad!

8.4 miles this morning. Longest since Feb 27. Felt pretty good. Some north wind, but sunny and cool. I decided the rule for when you REALLY need a bathroom is you will be exactly halfway between the two available park bathrooms.

Happy Easter and Passover to those of you who observe.

Same to you MOWC! Weather looks good for the easter hunt today!
