Home workout and planning on a stroll later on today. Have a fantastic weekend!
I’m back. It was quite an adventurous ride to say the least. Lots of ridiculously potholed back roads, gravel and dirt roads that were muddy and rutted. And some clean asphalt roads. Beautiful scenery abounded. The real wildcard was the wind. I have never ridden in wind like this before. Constant, unrelenting winds of 25-30 mph mostly coming from the side or head on. Gusts up to 45 mph. The winds were so strong that on a 3% downhill, I had to pedal in my small chainring up front (the one used for serious climbing) and was working hard to maintain 11 mph! The gusts were so fierce that at one point, the person riding ahead of me got caught unawares and one moment she was there and the next she had been blown across the oncoming lane and was on the opposite shoulder (fortunately it was a back road with no traffic). It was then that we decided to abandoned the set route for the event and take some short cuts back. Ended up with 56 miles instead of the planned 75 and by the time we returned, my legs were pieces of dead driftwood. It was insane, I loved every minute of the agony in a perverse sort of way. The skies were blue, the company was great - and now I’m gonna eat whatever I want for dinner :).
Congratulations, Michael. I despise cycling in the wind so much that I basically won’t do it. I think it’s because I’m not that strong of a cyclist, and wind just makes it miserable. It sounds like you did really well with it! Glad you shortened it up a little. GO EAT!!!
Yay!! Congrats. Your group was very smart to adjust the route!
Enjoy that dinner Michael!
Windy here too. After making lemon ricotta cookies and chocolate chip pie for tomorrow, I decided I needed to get my feet outside for a workout - may be difficult to do tomorrow, so I figured I better be safe, not sorry! Wind was wicked at times.
If you are celebrating anything tomorrow, enjoy!!!
Good job with the riding/running in the wind, Sabaray and MnK! Your NZ adventure sounds fantastic, NRE!
5 mile run on the treadmill (3:1 slow and slower pace), 2 mile walk outside.
Michael–Congratulations on your ride!
Enjoy New Zealand, NRE. I was there in 2000 and wasn’t working out yet–one trek (somewhere not too far from Christ Church) did me in!
Your hike looked great, Idad. when my D was a camper/counselor in NH she often did the Pemi trail with her campers.
I did something to my shoulder yesterday that I can’t explain–it’s just really painful to move my arm In any direction. My H thinks I have a frozen shoulder–I really hope that’s not the case. Back home to MA tomorrow.
MNKat - way to compete!
Bromfield, sorry to hear about the shoulder. I hope you can get in to have it seen soon. There may be a shoulder specialist in your area, and they may want to do an MRI. You do some serious workouts so if I were you I’d want to be sure it’s not something like a rotator cuff tear.
Ouch, Bromfield! Hope it is something that will heal soon and is NOT frozen shoulder. That thing sounds awfully painful.
A 30-min run and weights.
Bromfield, sorry to hear about your shoulder. Now that you’ll be home, get it checked out as soon as you can. Hopefully with a little PT you’ll get it resolved easily and quickly.
Bromfield- hope it is feeling better today. Keep us posted. So sorry!
4.5 sunny but cool miles in my Easter colors (Nuu-Muu and blue tights). 34.5 mile week, which is good. H is out on his 2nd bike ride of the weekend. It’s been pretty windy, but nothing like Michael had. H has a new Garmin and it lets me track his ride from my computer. I see this as a big benefit, since I worry sometimes with him riding 60-75 miles out in the country. This lets me see exactly where he is and that he is moving!
Beautiful day here. Mid-morning run. Garmin rested at home.
I finally threw in the towel. I had noticed a scratchy throat on Wednesday after my hike. Tried to ignore it, but Saturday morning brought nasal congestion, headache, and fever/chills. My annual flu bug, I suppose. So, I’ve spent the better part of the weekend under the covers. Not terribly sick, just enough to make me take it easy.
The glacier hike was a remarkable experience. A helicopter ride up to the glacier, followed by 2.5 hours of tramping around the ice field. Put it on your bucket list!
Today was a 5 mile round trip through the rain forest to a cave. Super treacherous footing with mud, slippery rocks, and a dry river bed.
Tomorrow we are in wine country and doing a wine-tasting tour. Not sure I’ll get my 15,000 steps in, but oh well.
Hope you feel better quickly IDad.
Congrats on the ride, MNK. Hope your shoulder isn’t frozen, Bromfield, and that it feels better soon. Hope you feel better, too, idad. And your trip continues to sound great, notrichenough.
Kept my Easter feasting in check yesterday – the dessert table was especially treacherous! Later today we’re off to FL for some “fun in the sun.” We’re hoping it will really and truly be spring when we get back! Looking forward to some outdoor running and walking, and lots of time at the beach. No computers on this trip, so will check in when we get back.
Enjoy your trip, CBB!
Bromfield, hope your shoulder issue can be resolved quickly. That sounds very painful. iDad, hope you feel better soon as well.
A little over 7 miles this morning; a little tired but won’t be able to run until Thursday so had to get it done. Have a good day, all.
Sending healing mojo to Broomfield and idad!
Headed up the hill now to burn off some of that chocolate
Sending wishes for all those under the weather due to illness or injury to find improvement today!
