Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

CBB- enjoy Florida! iDad- sorry you are sick. I know you will take it easy!
Sabaray- good start to the week.

I wanted to get outside this morning for a couple of miles since rain is moving in, but my Garmin was dead (inadvertently got left on after my computer powered down last night) and even though I tried to go out without it, I just couldn’t. 2 miles on the treadmill… The 3 grandcats are here for a week while daughter/son in law take a post- Easter (she is a priest, so is trashed…) trip to California. Trying to herd 6 cats and make sure there were no “accidents” took up too much of my pre-work time.

My weekend eating was less than stellar. After my 8.4 mile run I went right to Dunkin Donuts for a couple of donuts (and some donut holes for the dog). After our Easter Vigil service Sat night (2 hours long) we have a feast at the church, which is incredible. So, meatballs, shrimp, cake and wine at 10pm. We had quiche and salad for Easter dinner along with something D made called a hummingbird cake, which is fabulous. More wine. Time to dial it back today, but a co-worker just came by my office with a heaping plate of breakfast. They know me well. He said, “You better get down there fast. This is left over from the county United Way breakfast.” I’m trying to remain in my seat. It looked good, but I already ate and I’m not hungry. STAY IN OFFICE!

Easter week for clergy is like Exam Week x 3 for college students! Well deserved rest I’m sure.

Hummingbird cake is AMAZING. Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor makes a killer version.

I kept my quantity of food eating not too bad, but the quality… Homemade scones and bacon for breakfast and Perch Po-Boy (minus bun) Friday night with coleslaw and a few fries, chicken wings on Saturday, broccoli cheesy rice casserole yesterday along with mashed potatoes/gravy, turkey and all that business, plus a lemon ricotta cookie or two and a small slice of chocolate chip pie. Enjoyed every moment but have that mid-section expansion feeling going on today. Trying to cleanse a bit!

MOfWC, hope that breakfast did not tempt you.

Idad, ouch! After all you’ve been through, you need a lot of rest. Hope the illness is short lived.

abasket, oh that nasty middle expansion feeling! I spent all day yesterday taking care of the yard: weeding, pruning bushes, spraying roundup on some areas, digging garden beds… But I also ate a lot. No dessert, but a ton of brisket and broccoli for lunch, protein flapjacks, hard boiled eggs, fruit for breakfast… tea and a couple of glasses of wine with nuts and cheese for early dinner. Way more than I should have eaten. And one of the ovens is in! Lifting the darn thing is a great way to exercise upper body muscles. So now Mr B insists on home baked paska for the next weekend. Where there is a paska, there is carb trouble! Two cups of sugar… Ouch.

I’m trying again! I’ve popped in here to such encouragement over the years that I thought I’d try again to get moving in a productive way. As a former (and very lapsed) collegiate track athlete, my kids have inspired me to start running again. My eldest ran in HS and completed his first marathon this past summer. He’s training for the Brooklyn Half in May and my youngest (also ran in HS, but not since) is training for a 5K, also in May. So, mom laced up her running shoes and began the long road back using the Couch to 5K program. I’d love to be able to run with them some day. Last year’s knee surgery seems to have been successful as I’m having no pain after beginning the program. I’m counting on using this thread to keep me honest and on track - you all provide amazing inspiration!

Yay! Welcome back runnersmom! So glad the knee surgery was successful. Keep posting and sharing. I’m sure you have some good advice for us, too.

Welcome back runnersmom! We’re happy to be your cheerleaders!!!

Ran 3 miles virtually pain free on Saturday. Yea! Caught a cold on Sunday. Boo!

Had my yearly physical today, I’ve been trying to be good, I didn’t want the weight to be too high. I’m happy to say that my numbers were great. He said that my overall cholesterol was at the high end but that my good cholesterol was so high that the overall number was nothing to worry about. He had nothing but good things to say so I’m very happy.

I think my husband was wrong about frozen shoulder (he says 1975 was the last time he was wrong)–anyway, I can move my arm today. I still feel twinges when I lift it, but it’s nothing like it was two days ago. I’m happy!

I’m going to the gym this evening and will spend some time on the elliptical; I have time with my trainer tomorrow (will try to focus more on lower body).

Idad–hope you are feeling better. Great news on your numbers, Deb922. Abasket–Your dinner sounds wonderful.

Great news Bromfield - hope that you continue to see improvement and no setbacks!

Deb922, No pain- yeah! Cold- Yuck!!! Hope a day or two laying low helps you beat it!

30 minute run tonight - I’ve ran 3 of the last 4 days - that’s a lot of running for me! Looking forward to a break Wednesday with a spin class I think!

It was close to 60 when I ran but overcast. I need to have confidence to put less clothes on! Still wore below the knee running bottoms, a tshirt and a long sleeve Marmot tech shirt - my head was dripping by the end! My mind must still be in winter mode.

60s – summer! Got to love that.

ETA, okay, almost 60s. Still sounds good. Mid-40s and clear here this morning when I was out walking. That works too.

Congratulations Deb on the good doc visit and Brom on the recovering shoulder. Tell your husband that I was wrong once, too. But, I think it was in 1973.

Same ol’ same ol’ on the flu front. Just your garden variety cold/flu. Sore throat, nasal congestion, little achy, enough fever chills to dive under the down comforter for a long pre-dinner nap and to bed early.

The scratchy throat is gone today, replaced by the coughing/phlegm stage, so that’s probably a sign of progress. No exercise, but that’s offset by not much of an appetite…

Do some of these sound like too much fun or what?

Feel better, those on the ailing or injured list.

Weights. The final frontier when work does not let me run.

DebT, those are pretty cool - I can be a sucker for a fun app - anyone tried/used one of the apps listed?

Those apps look good. Some of my family members use Strava a lot. I have the Garmin Connect app on my phone. I mainly use RunningAhead online to log everything, but I do have a phone app, too.

Home workout (stability ball, light dbs, elastics, etc) yesterday afternoon.
Pleasant walk this morning.

Day 2 - 1.5 on the treadmill (fast walking) and weight workout at home. Day 2 of C25K tomorrow. I think if I can just build a time to exercise into each day I will be able to do this…thanks, as always, for the encouragement!

Excellent, runnersmom. You are already done with the hardest part of the training - beginning it.

Build it in just like it is an appointment. You can do it!

6 miles total for the day. It’s our wedding anniversary, so I left work a little early to get my run done and get home. I hopped out of my car at the trail, slammed the door, and had forgotten to get my spare key that I carry on the runs. Locked out of the car with phone in the car. Ugh. I haven’t done that in many years. Borrowed a phone from a soccer mom to call H, who, of course, didn’t answer. Ran 2 miles to another park with lots of soccer fields and tried again. Got him, asked him to meet me at my car. I was 2 miles away and got there right when he did, so it all worked out.

I’m doing planks again. I do not like them. No, I don’t! How does everyone (looking at you, iDad) do these? Do you do sets or do you do 1 long one? I’m up to 1:45 and it is not pleasant. I can’t stand them enough to do the side planks or lifting a leg etc.

Soccer moms rock! (absolutely loved being one!!!)

“Build it in just like an appointment.” BINGO. You’re off on the right foot runnersmom!!!

We do planks in our trackside intervals class. We partner up - one person does 10 push ups while the other planks. Then switch. Do this for three rounds of each - so you have each completed 3 rounds of planks and 3 sets of 10 push ups. So the planks are not as long as you mention, but repeats with the push ups.
