Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Not doing enough strength training is something I really regretted last fall so am trying to make it a priority now. I actually think I do better on three runs a week. So, TRX twice a week, Pilates once and two short and one long run. Got to rest one day too.

runnersmom, no one will get tired of daily check-ins - that’s what we do! Keeps us honest and on the right track.

I just switched to Mizunos. I have a narrow heel and wide forefoot - in the past I’ve worn Nike, Saucony and Asics - I’ve changed brands each time due to design changes with a shoe I had really liked previously. Treat yourself to a trip to the running store for a fitting - one thing I’ve learned is that just because I like a certain model before doesn’t mean I’ll like it with the next release!

Yeah, I know what you mean MOWC. It’s a constant struggle to allocate time and tough enough to find the time to do the things you enjoy. Unless I’m doing a TRX routine, my ab work happens at the end of my weight lifting sessions and the last thing I want to do after an upper body routine is an ab workout! I have to admit, I’m not as diligent as I should be.

hello everyone ! I have been away…recovering from a broken kneecap from a weird fall! but i am back, its been a long winter. Back to swimming, strength training etc.Have to try not to push too much on the weaker leg, its hard to be patient, i have never been good at patience.

Fun to read everyones triumphs and stories .

Waving hi to san-dee!!! Yikes that sounds like a painful fall! Happy to hear you have recovered well. Welcome back!

thanks, abasket! It was sorta painful…no surgery, luckily - just weeks in an annoying splint and 3 months of PT. Frustrating but i did my best to keep a positive outlook, and now things are improving rapidly. You don’t know what you’re missing till its gone. I’ve been injured before but this was the most seriously. Thankfully, thinks looking up.

Howdy after being AWOL for a week or so. Spent a long Easter weekend with our daughter in Seattle. It was a wonderful trip - lots of exercise, lots of good food, and lots of fun. I really enjoy hiking and we had another good hike this trip. I can certainly understand why she loves the mountains there (we don’t quite have that same terrain here in Indiana!).

My routine is somewhat similar to Sabaray’s. I do strength training with a trainer twice a week, two shorter runs during the week and a long run on Saturdays. I keep saying I need to add in yoga or Pilates but it hasn’t happened. Plus lots of walking every day. Now that the weather is starting to be decent I’ll be adding in biking on the weekend. But I’m more of a recreational/leisure biker than a hard core biker.

iDad-I hope you’re doing better. The cold/flu sounds miserable. Hopefully you have turned the corner.

Runnersmom-I am a big fan of the C25K program. I started it almost 3 years ago for similar reasons to yours. Both my kids run and I wanted to do the annual Thanksgiving race that they had been doing for years. Once I conquered the C25K program, I just kept adding distance and improving my pace. I’ll be running my fourth half marathon in a few weeks, something I never thought I was capable of doing.

san-dee-Ouch! That’s sounds painful! Glad you have healed and are able to get back to the exercise you enjoy.

MNK-I know it was awhile ago by now, but reading of your bike race sounded insane! Those winds must have been a killer. Glad you enjoyed yourself anyway!

san-dee - Welcome back and glad you healed well. Not fun!

I am up about 4 pounds, so need to cut back on all the not-so-good food I’ve been eating. It’s so easy for it to get out of control.

Some amazing workouts happening here.

After re-starting the biking after the winter and a back injury, I’ve kept mileage low and just focused on spending at least 30 minutes on the bike to try to get back into shape. Did 8.3 miles yesterday, and had a goal of repeating that this morning. Got all involved in my audio book and was shocked when my app interrupted me to say I’d just hit 10 miles about 1/2 a mile from my car. Nice surprise and felt pretty good.

Hope everyone stays safe in the midwest with the predicted storms tomorrow.

@interesteddad, you have no idea how happy that makes me. I DETEST planks, but I had been taught that the goal was to do really long holds. That ticking clock became evil to me. I think I could do just about anything for 30 seconds at a time. Maybe I’ll actually start doing them again.

Run and a few sprints this morning.

I gave in and started taking some Sudafed for the congestion, so I feel a lot better! Although it kept me up most of the night last night. Now, it’s Sudafed in the daytime and Benadryl for bed time! I can tell I’m on the mend. It’s transitioned to the sneezing stage.

Did I mention it’s been snowing off an on last night and tonight?

Work didn’t allow me to get to an official class today (darn that work!) But went to the fitness center AFTER work (raining outside) and did a combo of track run and arc trainer.

Thunderstorms here tomorrow - it’s been wet and soggy and foggy all week!

Life would be great if we didn’t have to work!

No snow here, but a giant thunderstorm woke me around 1 am - text from friend around 4:30 wondering if the group was still going to run - wasn’t raining so we got out there and did a little over 6. Damp for sure. TRX tonight, rest day (whew!) tomorrow.

iDad- If I were you with the snow I think I would be screaming in my driveway beating at the flakes by this point.

3 warm (70 degrees) miles this morning. We are supposed to get bad thunderstorms tonight.

I have some races on Saturday. 5K followed immediately (as in, I hope I make it back in time) by 10K. 5K is a corporate race and the 10K will be my “cool down”. It’s flat (rare around here) and a good way to get some mileage in. I’m planning to run the 5K hard and just try to survive the 10K. Should be nice weather- 46 at the start and warming up.

Good luck with the 5K! I wish I worked for a company that does so many corporate races.

Upper sixties and sunshine. People around me are talking about taking an Uber to downtown. I think I will treat myself to a pleasant walk!!!

This is actually a series that is run by the Nashville Sports Council. It isn’t a very big deal, but it’s nice for us because the company pays for the corporate races. There are about 5 a year and the company pays for a couple of other races, too, like the Country Music Marathon. The series is sort of complicated since there is a formula based on the size of the company and how many entrants you have in each particular race. The results are usually screwed up. I might have mentioned that I proudly held our first place award from the last race until the results were published and I discovered that 3 members of the Vanderbilt corporate team had been added to ours, and two of them were VERY fast! We got that corrected… Mainly, it’s a good opportunity to promote fitness in the company and encourage folks to get out there and walk or run the races and have fun. I worked for two different companies in Dallas where the corporate competition was like professional athletics and you feared for your job if you had a bad race. (I am not kidding) One of my companies competed nationally and we won the Runners World Corporate Cup for many years at a 3 day event which included all sorts of track events/relays and 2 road races.

In other news, I found a new site for athletic clothes for women. It’s called happypuppiesrun.com Looks like really good shorts for under dresses etc and capris and tights. I ordered a couple of pairs of the shorts.

Eagerly waiting for your reviews!

What an adorable name! Yes, let us know if you order!

MOWC, have fun at your races!
